McPherson’s Pump Works was established in 1939 at 213–221 Sunshine Road, Tottenham, as part of McPherson’s shift from hardware merchandising into Australian manufacturing. The McPherson’s Pump Works operated alongside the Wiltshire Files factory. The Wiltshire Files factory was located at the front, facing Sunshine Road, the McPherson’s Pump Works at the rear. The Ajax Pumps Company was the operational name for McPherson’s pump manufacturing division. The Tottenham plant produced industrial pumps, cast metal components, engineering fittings and wartime industrial supplies. The peak operations of the plant were during the 1950’s to 1970’s period. This was before the decline of the late 20th century that saw manufacturing consolidated into fewer sites, and parts of the Tottenham complex were demolished and the remaining structures suffered vandalism and deterioration.Today, the 1939, 1947, and 1965 sections remain highly intact, making the site one of the most important surviving industrial complexes in the region. The site is significant for its association with McPherson’s, one of Australia’s major industrial firms, its role in wartime and post war manufacturing, Its modernist industrial architecture and contribution to the industrialisation of Tottenham and the western suburbs. The Croatian Catholic Centre Sunshine was founded in the early 1980s as part of a wider reorganisation of Croatian pastoral care in Victoria. Its foundation stone was blessed in 1983, and the Centre grew into one of the largest Croatian Catholic centres in the world, centred on the Church of St Leopold Bogdan Mandić. The Sunshine TAB has a long, very local history, it was one of the everyday institutions of Sunshine’s working‑class life, a place woven into the suburb’s social fabric, especially from the 1970s through the early 2000s. The TAB (Totalisator Agency Board) began opening suburban betting shops across Victoria after its establishment in 1961. Olympic Cables began as part of Olympic Tyres in Footscray in 1940, became Olympic Cables Ltd in 1946, and later merged with Nylex in 1973 to form Olex Cables. The Tottenham site functioned as a major cable manufacturing and distribution facility, operating through the 1950s–1990s as part of the Olympic, Olex, National Cables and Nexans lineage. In 1981, Pacific Dunlop purchased Olex Cables. They also acquired Burton Cables and Spinaway Cables, merging all three operations. In 1994, Burton and Spinaway were merged into National Cables by the Pacific Dunlop. In 1999, a management buyout created an independent Cables Group and in 2006, Nexans (France) acquired Olex, forming Nexans Olex. The Tottenham site’s industrial footprint gradually wound down as operations consolidated into newer facilities at other sites. The Tottenham site was progressively decommissioned; buildings were demolished or repurposed. In 1974, Sunshine Cellars helped The Advocate Newspaper to celebrate its 50th anniversary. The store created a special window display marking the fiftieth year of the newspaper in Sunshine.
