These type of brown paper grocery bags were commonly supplied by SSW Supermarkets, and also by other Supermarkets. The customers generally packed their own grocery purchases into the bags, while the checkout people were engaged in the time consuming process of accurately entering by hand, the price of each item into the cash registers. One local SSW Supermarket was situated on Sun Crescent in Sunshine. The introduction of stronger plastic film grocery bags and barcode scanning saved time, and the checkout person took over the role of packing the grocery purchases. In recent times customers who use the self check out terminals have again assumed the role of packing their own groceries. The environment polluting plastic bags however still remain, unless the customers bring their own 'green' bags.These two brown paper grocery bags provide a historical reminder of how grocery purchases were taken home from Supermarkets in the not too distant past. It is likely that many of the younger generation have no idea of how the paper grocery bags looked like, or that they were once used instead of plastic bags.Two brown paper bags which were available for free in SSW Supermarkets, so that customers could pack their grocery purchases to be able to take them home. S.E. Dickins was one of Victoria’s most important early self‑service grocery chains, founded in 1920 by former Moran & Cato manager Samuel Edward Dickins. It grew from a single Geelong store into a 54‑store Victorian network before being taken over by Coles in 1958 (Australian Food Timeline). After the Coles take over, some stores were rebranded Coles New World, whereas others kept the Dickins name for several years. In 1991, the New World name was phased, and all stores were rebranded simply as Coles Supermarkets. This store was subsequently rebranded as Bi-Lo Supermarket which was also part of the Coles Group. The Self family story begins with two sisters, not the brothers. In 1932, Margery and Edna Self took over Mrs Magee’s confectionery shop on Main Road West. They expanded the business by purchasing Mr Hounslow’s petrol bowser. In 1934, the Self family built a new general store at 18 East Esplanade, St. Albans which became the foundation of the future Self Bros Supermarket. The family lived in a house behind the shop. The name Self Bros & Goddard emerged when Bernice Self married Alfred Goddard in 1947. By 1955, the directory lists Self Bros & Goddard Storekeepers and later in 1960 to 1974 as Licensed Grocers. This marks the shift from a family general store to a major grocery business Later years it became the Festival Supermarket and subsequently the St. Albans SUPA IGA Supermarket.
