"Mr D. Danson is one of the leaders of the industry around Bendigo. His property is at Kangaroo Flat, and besides being a grower, he has a factory for the manufacture of pulp and tomato sauce. Mr Danson was engaged in dairying in the Gippsland hill country at Thorpdale, but 14 years ago went to Kangaroo Flat with the object of being near a big centre where there were better facilities for the education and employment of his family. He converted the property of 20 acres at Kangaroo Flat into a dairy farm and established a milk round at Bendigo. The limited area, however, proved a drawback, and attention then was given to tomato growing. After having concentrated on the production side, he installed a plant for the treatment of his own tomatoes, and those of other growers. William Rae (1823-1887) was born into a farming family in Scotland and came to Australia in i852. After coming to the Bendigo area, he established a puddling machine in American Gully. He then bought a claim on the Victoria reef and was quite successful. Subsequently he bought a steam engine and three batteries to begin crushing quartz. This was such a boon that he moved to a more convenient location in Happy Valley, where he set up a crushing battery with 35 heads.Sketch of a crushing works. Printed underneath is: Wm. Edith Lunn (nee Bishop) was born in Bendigo in July, 1907, and has lived all her life in the city and its immediate environs. Edith long interest and involvement in the community was recognised in 2002 when she was awarded the Order of Australia medal for her services to, and interest in, Bendigo's history. This book records some of her recollections of Bendigo in its earlier days. Bendigo (/ˈbɛndɪɡoʊ/ BEN-dig-oh), formerly known as Sandhurst, is an Australian city in north-central Victoria. The city is located in the Bendigo Valley near the geographical centre of the state and approximately 150 kilometres (93 mi) north-west of Melbourne, the state capital. Bendigo is administered by the City of Greater Bendigo. The council area encompasses roughly 3,000 square kilometres. The city is surrounded by smaller towns such as Castlemaine, Heathcote, Kyneton, Maryborough, Elmore, Rochester, Goornong and Axedale. The traditional owners of the area are the Dja Dja Wurrung (Djaara) people. The discovery of gold on Bendigo Creek in 1851 transformed the area from a sheep station into one of colonial Australia's largest boomtowns. News of the finds intensified the Victorian gold rush, bringing an influx of migrants from around the world, particularly Europe and China. Bendigo became eastern Australia's largest 19th-century gold-mining economy, and the wealth generated during this period is reflected today in the city's Victorian architectural heritage. From 1853 until 1891, Bendigo was officially named Sandhurst. Bendigo's boom period lasted until the early 20th century and after a temporary decline in population and employment, renewed growth occurred from the 1930s as the city consolidated as a manufacturing and regional service centre. The house was designed in 1924 by Harold Desbrowe Anneal and described as ahead of its time. Born in Happy Valley, Bendigo, Victoria in 1865, Desbrowe Annear was the elder son of James Annear, mining contractor, and Eliza Ann (née Hawkins). In 1883, Desbrowe-Annear was articled to Melbourne architect William Salway and during this time his interest and knowledge of architecture grew extensively. In 1889 he chose to pursue a practice of his own having already received recognition for his architectural sketches and papers delivered to the Victorian Institute of Architects. This Environment Effects statement was prepared to support a proposal by Bendigo Gold Associates Pty Ltd. to recover gold from material deposited along Bendigo Creek. To the north of the intersection on Napier Street is Canterbury Park and Lake Neangar while the Swan Hill railway line and the local railway station are located to the south. The original inhabitants of the area were the Dja Dja Wurrung. Following the discovery of gold at Sandhurst (Bendigo) in October 1851, Joseph Crook discovered a gold nugget while searching for stray horses. This event sparked a gold rush in the area leading to the establishment of the township in 1852, the population quickly building up to 40,000. The Post Office opened on 1 August 1857. In 1862, the Borough of Eaglehawk was established, which included the nearby township of California Gully. After the alluvial gold was exhausted in 1893, reef mines were established, with 300 tonnes of gold extracted. Most of the mines had closed by the 1890s and by 1947 the population had decreased substantially to 4,090. The Eaglehawk Magistrates' Court closed on 1 January 1990. In 1994 the Borough of Eaglehawk was amalgamated by the Victorian Government with four other councils to become the city of Greater Bendigo."Eaglehawk.
