Lewers, widow of Samuel Lewers. ...This volume was found among a large collection of documents from Linton Primary School, with no clue as to why it was among that material.Leather quarter bound volume with dark green cloth infill cover, contains copies of correspondence sent and received, handwritten in ink on lined, blue paper. There are no inscriptions or spine titles. The book was commenced by the first manager of the Linton branch of the Bank of New South Wales, Samuel Lewers. The first letter is dated 5 April 1860. Final entry is dated September 14th, 1904. It includes letters written in 1895 by Thomas Lewers on behalf of his mother Mrs S. During World War I, she moved to Berry, NSW, where she lived with her older brother, Dr Thomas Ross Lewers. ...Ida Lewers, the fifth child of Annie and Samuel Lewers, was born at Linton in 1865. During World War I, she moved to Berry, NSW, where she lived with her older brother, Dr Thomas Ross Lewers. In Berry she was Secretary of the local branch of the Red Cross, and was on the management committee of the Red Cross home for convalescent soldiers. When she left Berry she was presented by the "Diggers of Berry" with an 'illuminated address', in appreciation of her services. In 1926, Ida Lewers returned to live at Linton, at first with her brother William Ochiltree Lewers and his family at Mannibadar, and afterwards at the former Bank of New South Wales building where she had lived as a child. Ida Lewers taught Sunday School classes and was deeply involved with the Church of England throughout her life. Bennett Joseph Shepherd Armstrong Kerr George Smith Thomas Wise Robert Cochrane John Garvey Thomas Kennedy John O'Meara E. ...Samuel Lewers was the first manager of the Bank of New South Wales in Linton, was president of the Shire of Grenville, and also acted as a JP and magistrate.A certificate of appreciation in the form of an "address", presented to Samuel Lewers on his retirement in 1895. The address has been printed on cardboard in decorative lettering, it is headed "To Samuel Lewers, Esq. JP", and is signed by nineteen residents of Linton and district, many of whom were owners of pastoral properties or business enterprises in and around Linton, and/or also involved in local government. Dodds [Secretary], and committee members Thomas Hoskins, Thomas Kennedy, W.G. ...From the late 1870s to the 1930s, illuminated addresses were a popular way to commemorate special occasions and were given to recognize outstanding service. They featured beautiful calligraphy and ornate designs. Arthur Grace was a draper who ran a business in Linton (at 'Criterion House') from the mid-1860s until he left Linton to return to England in 1873. He later returned to live in Ballarat, where he died in 1905. He was heavily involved with the Methodist/Wesleyan congregation at Linton, and instrumental in establishing the Linton Mechanics' Institute and Free Library. (Note: The 'Adress' does not refer to the Linton Mechanics' Institute, but to the 'Committee of the Public Library at Linton'.) The Address was made by Francis Wilson Niven, a lithographer, printer and bookbinder from Ballarat. (See 'Ballarat Star', 10 March 1873.)This may be the first reference to the 'Public Library' at Linton. Framed document, an 'illuminated address' which was presented to Arthur Grace when he moved back to England from Linton in 1873. The Address was presented in acknowledgement of the "important services rendered by you in promoting the material and social prosperity of a district wherein you have so long resided, but more particularly for you liberality and cordial co-operation in establishing a Public Library at Linton". The address is signed by the President, Secretary and eight members of the 'Committee of the Public Library' at Linton : S. Lewers, S.M. [President], J. Dodds [Secretary], and committee members Thomas Hoskins, Thomas Kennedy, W.G. Bennett, Robert S.
