The Dederang-Mt. Beauty Football Club, nicknamed the Bombers, is an Australian rules football club playing in the Tallangatta & District Football League. The club is based in Dederang, Victoria and Mount Beauty, Victoria. It was formed in the early1900s and disbanded in 1976 when it merged with Mount Beauty to form Dederang-Mount Beauty football club. In 1948 the competition received a boost with an influx of new players who came to work on the Kiewa Hydro Scheme. George and Gordon Hobbs were the famous Hobbs brothers of Dederang which two Premierships were built around. Four brothers starred in Dederang’s First Flag in the Tallangatta League in 1958. Dederang Football Club was one of the earliest recorded football clubs in the Kiewa Valley area. Many players came from pioneering farming families in the area and there were often several boys from the same family playing in the team. Dederang won its first flag in the Tallangata League in1958 led by the Hobbs brothers Rex, Colin, Ken and Jack2 original black and white photographs of Dederang football club teams. 1903 or 1908 Moorabbin Australian Rules Football Club. Philip Jones, a relative of James Jones who was a pioneer settler in Moorabbin Shire, is holding the football. In the late 1850s Melbourne's schools are first recorded organising football games modeled on precedents at English schools The earliest known such match was played on 15 June 1858 between Scotch College and Melbourne Grammar School on the St Kilda foreshore. On 10 July 1858, the Melbourne-based Bell's Life in Victoria and Sporting Chronicle published a letter by prominent Victorian cricketer Tom Wills, calling for the formation of a "foot-ball club" with a "code of laws" to keep cricketers fit during winter. The Melbourne Football Club's rules of 1859 are the oldest surviving set of laws for Australian football. The ten simple rules were drawn up on 17 May at a meeting chaired by Tom Wills and in attendance were journalists W. J. Hammersley and J. B. Thompson, and Thomas H. Smith. The rules were signed by Tom Wills, William Hammersley, J. Sewell, J. B. Thompson, Alex Bruce, T. Butterworth and Thomas H. Smith. Importantly, the rules were widely publicised and distributed. Having been codified in 1859, this means that Australian football is an older sport than most other football codes in the world, including soccer. As Geoffrey Blainey states, "soccer has no club that matches the antiquity of the early Victorian clubs." In 1859 several new football clubs formed including the Castlemaine Football Club, Geelong Football Club and the Melbourne University Football Club. The first football match played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) was not until 1876. Cricket authorities soon saw the opportunity to capitalise on the rapid growth of Australian football, however, and soon most grounds in Victoria were expanded to accommodate the dual purpose, a situation that continues to this day. Football matches between 1859 and 1899 were played in a 20-per-side format. n 1896, delegates from the stronger and wealthier Victorian Football Association clubs—Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon, Fitzroy, Geelong, Melbourne, St Kilda and South Melbourne—met to form a breakaway competition and in 1897, the Victorian Football League (VFL), was born as an eight-team competition. Popularity of the VFL grew rapidly and by 1925 with 12 teams, had become the most prominent league in the game and would dominate so many aspects of the sport from that point on. Moorabbin Football Club, nicknamed the Kangaroos, was the name of two distinct Australian rules football clubs which played in the Victorian Football Association (VFA). The first club, founded in the early 20th century, joined the VFA in 1951 and played there until 1963 with great success; they played home matches at Moorabbin Oval and wore royal blue and white hooped jerseys. The second club played in the VFA from 1983 to 1987. Moorabbin played initially in the Federal Football League, making their debut in 1909 and competing until 1950. During this time the club won 12 premierships, including winning all six premierships staged over the nine years between 1940 and 1948 (the competition was in recess from 1942 until 1944). The club entered the VFA in 1951. Its Federal League home ground, the Dane Road Reserve, was not up to VFA standards; so, in 1951 the club played at Cheltenham, and in 1952 moved into the Moorabbin Oval, which the Moorabbin Council had developed during 1951. The Kangaroos made the 1954 and 1955 finals series without success but in 1957 they helped eliminate premiership favourite Williamstown after defeating them by two points in the Semi Final. Moorabbin, who were coached by Bill Faul, took on Port Melbourne in the Grand Final, whom they had not once beaten since joining the league. In another upset, Moorabbin won comfortably to claim their maiden VFA premiership. In the early 1960s, the Moorabbin Council was very keen to bring a Victorian Football League team to Moorabbin Oval. 1964, the Moorabbin City Council secured a deal with St Kilda, who moved to Moorabbin Oval starting in 1965. The club originally intended to seek readmission for the 1965 season, but in July the club committee decided to withdraw permanently from the Association, and disbanded.Photograph is Black and White. George Milford, a long term staff member of Thompsons Foundry Castlemaine, remembers discussing Alexander Sinclair with this son, Alex Sinclair Jnr. "When Alex Jnr was a boy, his father, a senior design engineer, was sent to Malaya to oversee the erection on site of a suction cutter dredge for Thompsons. This was an adaptation of the idea of a bucket-dredge, where gold is won from alluvial gravels. In the 1915-1920 era, the Thompsons Engineering Department designed a suction-cutter dredge, by which hydraulic suction with a revolving cutter at the end of a long proboscis would collect the alluvial soil and deliver it into the dredge for recovery of the precious metals. Export marketing was then ‘all the go’, and the tin dredges were ordered from Thompsons, using the new cutter design. The dredges were, of course, shipped to Malaya in pieces, ready to be assembled on site. A number of Thompsons employees were selected to travel to Malaya to assemble the dredges. There were fourteen men in the gang. These men sailed on 1st July 1925, their number including Delmenico, McKay and Charles Albert Hauser, an engine driver. C A Hauser died of malaria in Malaya shortly after arrival. Components for a further three of these dredges were in transit or on site when the first suction-cutter dredge was assembled and tested. The designers had failed to take into account the fact that, in the jungle floor in Malaya, many trees grow up, and fall down, in tropical conditions, and become submerged still waterlogged in the floor of the jungle, and in the tin-bearing gravels. The suction-cutter dredge was found to be inefficient in these circumstances, the price of tin had fallen and the Malayan client reneged on the contract. Faced with an outlay of over £4,000 on which no money would be received, the company went bankrupt on 25th August 1925. Alex Sinclair Snr was at that stage in Malaya, and received the news of the bankruptcy by telegram. Upon telegraphing his employers for funds to return home, he received the reply that there were no such funds available. Alex Sinclair Jnr told the story of how his father worked as a labourer in Malaya for two years, while his mother took in washing and ironing during the same period, until together they had assembled enough money to pay for his father’s return Anyone who talks about “the good old days” is talking nonsense!"Large blue printed paper plan outlining the conditions of contract for the making of a steel boiler. The Children of Research State School in 1922 Photo and list of children provided by Ivy Reynolds to Ross McDonald. Ross has supplemented and filled in some blanks, from the children names in Andrew Lemons book 'Return to Research. A centenary of Research Primary School, 1989 ' page 103. Additional commentary provided by Ivy Reynolds in 2006. 1. Winnie La Frenz - a great friend of the Reynolds 2. Ruth Thompson - Wally Buttwell's niece 3. Bertha Wiltshire 4. Ivy Dickson (who grew up to be a good-looking woman) 5. May Norman - a cousin to the Reynolds through Ernest Reynolds 6. Elsie Shaw 7. Veenie Turner (Ivy was not 100% sure of her surname, but said she was not related to Hazel Turner) 8 Lil La Frenz (Lilian) - a bright spark and a lively tennis player 9 Lily Wilson (looks like a boy) - had red hair 10 Hazel Turner - a cousin of the Reynolds who lost her mother very early in life. Her father remarried and the family then became Roman Catholics, which in those days, caused them to become distant with the Anglican Reynolds family 11 Lila Dickson (Lyla) 12. Jack Wilson - a red-head like his sister 13. Len Blashick 14. Marjory Palmer 15 ? Burgoyne 16 Lance Doney and 17 Bill Doney. Cleaver boys who went to Ivanhoe Grammar. Both caught TB from their mother and died young. 17. Bill Doney - The Doneys were clever boys. They went to Ivanhoe Grammar after Research Primary and this educational advantage caused them to grow apart from the local boys. Both caught tuberculosis from their mother and didn't live long. Lance died first, but Bill survived long enough to join the Merchant Navy. He eventually entered the Mont Park Sanatorium where Ernest Reynolds used to visit him every Sunday. The Doney boys were keen on Margaret and Ivy Reynolds at one stage (probably before they became seriously ill) and Bill gave Ivy a macrame belt he'd made. 18 ? Burgoyne 19 ? Messen (Frank or Alex Masson) 20 Neville West 21 ? Shaw 22 ? Shaw 23 Neil Palmer 24 George Shaw or his brother Bertie 25 George Shaw or his brother Bertie 26 Eva Kilson 27 Lorna Turner 28 ? Henry Fox (or possibly Eric?) 29 Nancy Storey (adopted) 30 Mona Fox 31. Nell Storey (also adopted) She married Sam Howard and they had 2 daughters. One went to Queensland, the other lived locally and helped at the Research Anglican Church. 32 Victor Davey 33 Margaret Reynolds 34 Ethel Davey - cousin of the Reynolds through Ernest Reynolds 35 ? Randall (Freddie) 36 ? Randall (Kitty) -Their father was a builder who made toys for every child at the school one Christmas 37 Ronnie Turner 38 ? Ivy couldn't remember his name, but thought he lived at the Research Hotel 39 John Reynolds 40 Jim Davey 41 Unknown 42 Ivy Reynolds 43. Unknown - one of the unknown boys is Jimmy Storey 44. Unknown 45. Unknown 46. Dorothy La Frenz 47. Eric Fox 48. Unknown 49. Possibly Bert Shaw One of the boys in the photograph is Jimmy Storey The Reynolds family were early settlers in Research. The Reynolds/ Prior collection of photographs were taken by Tom Prior, the maternal uncle of Ivy Reynolds, around 1900 and the 60 photos in the album give a fine overview of many of the landmarks of Research and Eltham over 100 years ago. lvy lived in the family home for many years at 106 Thompson Cres Research. Ivy's father, Ernst Richard Reynolds and grandfather, Richard Reynolds, lived at the same address. Ivy's father Richard worked for Mr. Trail on his property in Research. Reynolds Road is named after the family. Mr Tom Prior (wife Eva) worked at the Melbourne zoo. He was very innovative and made his own camera, using the black cloth hood to exclude the light. The photographs are a reminder of the rural nature of Research and Eltham and its rich heritage. Black and white photograph mounted in an album, the Reynolds/Prior Photograph Collection, this being one of 53 reproduced black and white images of early Eltham. The Reynolds/Prior Photograph Collection, Presented to the Eltham District Historical Society, 14 June 2006 by Ross McDonald. The current school, Albion Primary School, No 4265 opened in 1926. It was built on a site once owned by John Fitzgerald (1850s). The land was later acquired by H. V. McKay who had transferred his Sunshine Harvester Works to the area in 1905 - 7. In 1920, the Albion railway station was moved nearer Ballarat Road at the request of Mr McKay. More people came to live in the area including soldier settlers.Albion Primary School's mission is to 'Aim High' in all we do so that our students grow to be socially capable, reach their full academic potential and become caring, respectful community minded people. Albion Primary School is located in a residential area in Albion, a small pocket of the local government area of Brimbank, approximately 10 kilometres west of Melbourne and was established in 1926. Our current enrolment is 199 students. We have a rich cultural diversity amongst our school community. The school is set around a courtyard with spacious playing areas including a grassed oval, running track, games courts, an adventure playground, sand pit, jumping pits, shady courtyard and garden areas, a vegetable garden and fruit tree orchard. As well as classroom groups, we have our learning teams, student house groups (siblings are allocated to the same house) and a Junior School Council. The school has four main buildings. All classrooms have air conditioning and interactive screens. Block A houses classrooms, staff areas and the administration offices. Our newest building has classrooms and some small group/office spaces. Block B includes our library, canteen and a multi-purpose room used for indoor physical education, Perceptual Motor Program, drama, visiting performers, and community activities. Block C houses classrooms and specialist rooms. We expect and receive the best from our students in terms of their learning and behaviour. The school’s dedicated and effective staff is strongly committed to helping students achieve personal, behavioural, social and academic success. In terms of learning, the highest priority is placed on the work in English and Mathematics. We also have a range of specialist and extra-curricular programs that we provide. Our specialist teacher-librarian is involved in reading extension programs that support development in literacy. All children are able to develop their artistic abilities through visual arts and music program. Our music program is supported by the Australian Children's Music Foundation. A specialist Physical Education teacher provides lessons for all children as well as the opportunity for students to participate in organised lunch time sporting competitions between the house groups. Auslan is the additional language all students learn at Albion. All children participate in a student wellbeing program that focuses on developing strong connections and a sense of belonging within the school. Our school student leaders participate in programs that help develop their leadership skills. 5106.01 - Albion State School 1949 Grade 1A 5106.01 - Albion State School 1949 Grade 1A Names Back Row L2R Tommy Roach Brian Davidson Frank Bruce Unknown Robert Laity Colin Kindred David Dolman Trevor Schmiot Neil McMahon Tom Clayton 2nd Row L2R Glenda Fletcher Sandra Barnes Barbara McKay Rebecca Unknown Faye Stephens Unknown Shirley Foster Linda Sexton Lorraine Sykes Jean Munro 3rd Row L2R Joy Miller Unknown Pat Madden Margaret Dern Unknown Unknown Alex Currie Rae Fenner Judith Short Lorraine Chin Unknown Carol Trickey Front Row L2R David Engellener Robert Skinner Geoff Hill Leslie OHanlon Warren Gamble Unknown Alan Thompson 5106.02 - Albion State School 1949 Grade 1B 5106.04 - Albion State School 1949 Grade 3 5106.05 - Albion State School 1949 Grade 4 5106.06 - Albion State School 1949 Grade 5 6albion state school, albion primary school, adelaide street, albion
