The Ballarat School of Mines was opened to student in 1870. It was the first School of Mines in Australia. In 1991 Premier of Victoria Joan Kirner visited her former workplace (Ballarat Girls' Technical School, a division of the Ballarat School of Mines), to officially open and name four new facilities, marking stage 2 of the school's State Works and Services Development Project. Honoured in the naming ceremony was the late Albert Steane, the late Kenneth Flecknoe and Mr Jack Barker, President of the Ballarat School of Mines. The fourth facility was the recently opened carpentry and joinery complex. Mrs Kirner said naming the building in honour of the three men would act as a continual reminder of their contribution to education in Australia and what they have passed on to future generations. She said the Government and the State Training Board saw the college as not only one that was most important to Victoria but also nationally and internationally. On 28 March 1981 the Ballarat College of Advanced Education 1870 Founders hall was opened. The hall was erected from the proceeds of the Centenary Appeal, held in 1975. It cost approximately $800,000. The hall commemorates the initiative of the founders of the original Ballarat School of Mines and its "descendants", including Ballarat College of Advanced Education, as well as formal technical education in Australia. The hall plans were to erect a building to accommodate 670 persons in a theatre type seating arrangement and to be used for multi-purpose use by community groups as well as by the College. Construction of the hall commenced in 1978. It was opened approximately 110 years after the Ballarat School of Mines (26 October 1870) and 10 years after the opening of the Mt Helen Campus (31 October 1870)..1) Morgan B. "A limited number of Centenary Medallions designed by Mr. V. Greenhalgh were produced by Stokes & Son, Melbourne to commemorate the Centenary of the School. The medallion was produced from copper base metal with a silver oxide finish and has been well received by past student, present students, staff members and the general public. William Box was born in 1834 in Withyham , Sussex England and married Elizabeth Avis Box in 1854. They sailed to Australia in 1855 aboard the SS Omega. At first they rented and then purchased land on Jasper Road East Brighton ( now McKinnon / Ormond) that was part of the Henry Dendy Special Survey 1841. An early settlers’ Cottage on the site became their home and they farmed the land while raising 13 children. The Cottage was extended as required. In 1984 that early settler cottage was found in a dilapidated state by Laurie Lewis, in his Timber Yard in Jasper Rd Ormond.. The Moorabbin City Council, Federal Government, Mr Lewis and CMHS members reconstructed the Cottage in 1985 . Box Cottage Museum, a reconstruction of an early settler hut, is named after the Box family who resided there 1865 -1913 . William Box who with his wife Elizabeth and 13 children lived and farmed on the block of land in Jasper Road, East Brighton ( now McKinnon / Ormond) that was part of the Henry Dendy Special Survey 1841 Inscribed in Album : “ The early photos in this album were found by Mr (Laurie) Lewis when he was demolishing the Old Box Cottage. He gave them to Mrs Avis Box Eldridge who in turn gave them to me. They were not identified. I believe they rightly belong in the Cottage.
