Black and white photograph of 2 trams at Preston Workshops c1948 First tram 500 is a W2 class tram built by MMTB at Preston Workshops in 1928. It entered service 27/4/1928 and was withdrawn from service and sold in 1981. The tram's destination is shown as "Special". The tram has been fitted "T" lettered taillights. The second tram, 198, is a Q1 class single truck straight-sill combination tram built by the MMTB at Holden St Workshops. It entered service in 1923 and was reclassified as a Q class tram. It was converted to all night service in 1937 and operated until 1957. The photograph shows Scrubber tram No. 10 in Swanston St with the Foys department store in the background. The tram was later renumbered to 10W. Has W2 class tram No. 500 behind. This tram began its life in Sydney in 1908, converted in 1952 to a scrubber, and sold to MMTB in 1959. The tram is now at the Bylands TMSV site. Craig Tooke, formally of Yarra Trams substations advised 12/8/2020 by email to Warren Doubleday. "An interesting photo. I don’t know who the person in the photo is. More than likely the bulb in from an industrial installation such as mine etc. and not tram or train. The reason is that only Melbourne trams has Hackbridge Hewittic rectifiers that were used for traction. There was three sets of bulbs installed at West Brunswick, Deepdene and Preston. West Brunswick is definitely still in existence and probably Deepdene is still in existence as the old substation was abandoned intact and just left intact. Preston of course has gone and was removed as part of the work done at PWS. Another clue is the number 500/6 which means it was from a 500 kW – 6 bulb unit. The traction units were all in multiples of 150 kW per bulb i.e. the tramway ones were 600 kW rated. The number "40246" is the bulb serial number. Each bulb manufactured had an individual serial number. Interesting the bulbs at Brisbane Tram Museum have the following serial numbers to the ones that were at Essendon tram sub. Printed Debenture for "The Prahran and Malvern Tramways Trust", No. 539, for 500 Pounds, B Series, entitling the Bearer to the sum of 500 pounds on 31/3/1914. Has the paper seal of the PMTT applied, signed by Alex Cameron, Henry Barnes and W. O. Strangward. Has a perforated edge along the right hand side. Was printed for issuing on 1/1/1913, but has a stamp in the top right corner issuing on 1/7/1913. Also has a red stamp on the lower edge "Produced for Jul 10th" Has been punched by machine stating "The Melbourne Tramways Trust is now the owner of this Debenture which has ceased to be transferable by virtue of the provisions of the Melbourne Tramways Trust Act 1903" and "CANCELLED". Drawn using a card for Actil Sheets. 2 - T class 178 - undated - 250 x 485 - has notes on the rear about the tram. 3 - T class 179 - 5/9/1959 - 520 x 255 - has notes on the rear about the tram. 4 - W2 class 646 - undated - 265 x 630 - incomplete, has an advert for White Crow sauce. 5 - Q class 197 as an all night car - undated - 250 x 510. 6 - W2 class 455 - (East Preston Depot) - 21-1-1962 - 410 x 223 - has adverts for Stramit ceiling tiles and Foster Clarks foods. 7 - Scrubber or track cleaner No. 8 - 23-6-1959 - 405 x 220 - has a sketch of same tram on the rear showing the body strengthening. 8 - Y1 class tram, No. 613 - 5-6-1961 - 235 x 510 - has advert for VEB eggs 9 - W4 class 672 - undated - 520 x 220. 10 - Brisbane FM 543 - undated - 240 x 440 - has adverts for Brisbane Daily Telegraph, and Rothmans. Has used a 1959 calendar for the sheet. 11 - W6 986 at Preston Workshops - 26-4-1958 - with trams in the background - 635 x 255 - with an advert for 3AW 12 - W7 class tram 1020 - undated - 630 x 255 - not completed - has advertised for Driving safely, Best tyres, Hardie, and Norman Banks on 3AW. 13 - W2 268 - outline sketch only - not completed - undated - 465 x 225. 14 - Melbourne's tram of the future, as envisaged by Norm Cross - No. 1103 - PCC car - 7-1967 - 500 x 190 with notes on the tram equipment. Has adverts for Aspro and 3DB. 15 - L class 103 - undated, not completed - 505 x 205, has advert for Pimms Demonstrates Norm Cross drawings of Melbourne trams and one Brisbane tram. Norm commenced with the MMTB Preston Workshops as a apprentice fitter and turner in 1959.
