Relaying tram tracks at the eastern end of Aphrasia St., Newtowwn, looking east. The location is immediately west of the Pleasant St. intersection, soon after Aphrasia St. was extended from Pleasant St. to Pakington St., so that the three sharp curves for trams into Retreat Road, Pleasant St., and then Aphrasia St., were reduced to one, from Pakington into Aphrasia St. May 1914. Note that sleepers are being used in the construction, as seen in items 9271 and 9214, with tie bars and continuous concrete about 50cm wide under each rail. The photo from The Sun News Pictorial shows a cable tram traveling over the new cable tram track connection in Lonsdale St during the early stages of the conversion of Swanston St to electric trams. The photo appeared in the 31/12/1925 issue of the Sun News Pictorial, page 14 - see reference. The photo is looking east along Lonsdale St and would have been taken on 30/12/1925. Shows the nature of the work to install a new section of cable tram track to connect the east and west sides of the street and that trams were run as soon as possible.
