Traquair House, Sussex Street, Linton, 2014 Photograph ...The original bank and residence were built in 1862, and the building was extended in 1873-74. The three windows on the left of the photograph are in the original building, and the windows and door on the right of the photograph are in the extension. The brick building was cement-rendered at an unknown later date. In 1904 the Bank of New South Wales built a new banking chamber & residence on the west side of Sussex Street next to the Post Office, after which the earlier building became a private residence. It was lived in for many years by members of the Lewers family (Samuel Lewers had been first manager of the Bank of NSW in Linton) and was purchased in the early 1960s by Stella Surman (née Todd). More recently it has been used as an antique shop and tea rooms, and it is currently a private residence. This photograph was taken in 2014 by Gary Hunt.One of three colour photographs printed on a single sheet of photographic paper. Bank of New South Wales Documents and records Special Lands Sale Linton 1861 Allotment 1 Section 1 Township of Linton Sale document Linton township history Approximately A3-size sheet of parchment which has been folded twice across. ...Similar to a deed of Title, this document records the purchase in 1861 by the Bank of New South Wales of a block of land in what is now Sussex Street, Linton. The Bank built a banking chamber and manager's residence on this site in the early 1860s. The building has had several additions and renovations since it was first built and is now a private residence known as Traquair House.Approximately A3-size sheet of parchment which has been folded twice across. The front of the folded document is printed "GRANT / BY PURCHASE / SPECIAL LANDS", and has sections for recording the sale number, date, area of land sold, and Parish, Section and Allotment numbers. It records Sale no. 197, on 15th April 1861, to the Bank of New South Wales, of a block of land 29 + 2/10ths of a perch in size, which was Allotment 1, Section 1, Parish of Argyle. The sale is recorded in greater detail on one side of the unfolded document. The unfolded document has a pencil sketch of the allotment in the top left corner, and a wax and paper seal in the lower left corner. It is signed by [Sir] Henry Barkly, who was Governor-in-chief of the Colony of Victoria in 1861. After leaving school in 1916, she worked as a milliner, and eventually became the proprietor of "Lucille" millinery in Ballarat. She married Geoffrey Surman in 1926. Stella Surman returned to live in Linton in the 1960s, and was very active in church and community affairs. Around the time Samuel Lewers retired in 1895 they leased and moved to Emu Hill, the property formerly owned by the Linton family, at that time owned by Edward Morey. ...Born in Ireland in 1838, Annie Ross married Samuel Lewers at Creswick in 1856. Samuel Lewers, a gold buyer and bank agent, became manager of the Bank of New South Wales in Linton in about 1860, and was afterwards the first Shire of Grenville President and a Justice of the Peace. Annie and Samuel Lewers had eleven children. They lived in the residence at the Bank of NSW building in Sussex Street (this building now known as Traquair House). Around the time Samuel Lewers retired in 1895 they leased and moved to Emu Hill, the property formerly owned by the Linton family, at that time owned by Edward Morey.
