Kurt WEBB United States of America Lives Chicago Webb draws his driving force in life and artistic vision from consequential discoveries he makes, while deliberately preferring less ordinary paths to his destinations. Inspirational methodologies in art history including the Dance of Death, Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, Ship of Fools and Woodcut Novels are cornerstones of his artwork. In 1988, during a visit to Australia, while viewing a small porcelain woodfired bowl and teapot by Australian artist Gwyn Hanssen Pigott, Kurt Webb decided to abandon his desire to make functional pottery. He realized that Piggott’s clay work was beyond comparison or emulation and was impossibly inimitable. In 2015, inspired by using impeccably made, functional commercial tea ware, Webb decided to give pottery making a second chance. As a result, Webb’s new functional work acknowledges traditional influences while he pursues individuality through eclectic subject matter, meticulous construction, and decoratively glazed surfaces–all produced within a contemporary context. This is a marble stopper bottle from the Port Fairy aerated waters factory of the Webb brothers. A marble stopper bottle was filled upside down so that as soon as the filling stopped the stopper was forced down to seal the bottle against the rubber ring. Pressure inside the bottle would keep the marble pressed against the top of the bottle. To open the bottle the marble was pressed down where it would fall into the neck chamber below. The marble would stay inside the chamber when the bottle was tilted up for drinking. The Webb brothers operated the Port Fairy Aerated Water and Cordial Factory in William Street (no 29) in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This bottle is of interest as an example of a marble stopper bottle from the aerated waters factory of the Webb brothers in Port Fairy. Cordial manufacturing was an important industry in Warrnambool and district for over 100 yearsThis is a marble stopper glass bottle. It has a rounded base with a rounded body tapering to a deeply-indented section which forms a narrow neck chamber. The top is rounded moulded glass with an opening. The green marble is loose inside the neck chamber and the rubber ring has been displaced and is at the bottom of the bottle. Webb, Mc Donald and Co., Engineers, Brassfounders, Sheet Metal Workers, Plumbers appear to be the forerunners of the firm of Webb Brothers and Co. which was as important business in Lava Street, Warrnambool in the early 20th century. The Webb Brothers were especially noted for their windmill making, establishing a business in South Melbourne in 1921.This luggage label is of some significance as it is the only item we have of the firm of Webb, McDonald and Co.Buff coloured rectangular label with dark blue text . Two corners of the label are mitred. It has a punched hole with a reinforce sticker .There is a pink smear on the front . This little slate notebook was given by Webb Brothers to their customers as an advertising tool. The Webb Brothers Company a large manufacturing firm in Lava Street, Warrnambool, making windmills, dairying utensils, steam boilers, and oil engines. They were also engineers, brassfounders and wholesale tinsmiths and plumbers. Motor car work became a speciality in the 1920s. In 1921 they opened a branch of their business in Melbourne (Bayswater) and the name of the firm became Presha Engineering Company. This notebook is of some interest as it was provided by Webb Brothers, an important company in Warrnambool in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It is also an example of the advertising techniques used by business houses at that time and an interesting example of the use of a slate pencil and slate pages as a recording mechanism.This is a brown leather notebook with three pages of slate material making eight spaces for recording notes. Notes recorded in slate can be rubbed out and the space used again. The slate pencil container is on the side of the notebook but the pencil is missing. The cover is mottled with creamy-yellow lines. The pages are edged in red and there is scribble on some pages. Another copy of this photograph, owned by Judy Maddigan has the inscription: "Taken about 1907 8HP De Dion / Ford owner Dr A.B. Webb / Bill Todd driver of De Dion / Doctor Webb inside Ford /First two cars in Linton / No number plates No Licences / The policeman Mr Robinson asked me / for 2/6 he said Bill you have to have / a Licence to drive these cars so / I never went through a test/ for a Driver's Licence / My licence is in the 2000 mark". Inscription signed: "Wm Todd". Black and white image which shows a man and a woman driving in a Ford motor car, following a man and three children driving in a De Dion motor car. One car is an 8 horsepower De Dion driven by W.J. Todd. The other car is a Ford driven by Dr. Webb at Linton. No driving licence was in force in 1908. The plans are presented in a keepsake folder. They show marks of sections copied and assembled together. Overall, the plans are similar to those drawn by Mr P Webb to the order of the Loch Ard Shipwreck Centenary through Mr P Williams, the organizer of the Centenary competition. “The details were based on all available information which resulted in considerable historical research…and received favourable comment from model makers because of their attention to detail…In excess of 650 sets of plans were sold before entries closed…Many plans were probably purchased by collectors and interested persons for historical reference. An illustrated historical story sheet…was prepared and enclosed with the plans…” (‘Loch Ard Shipwreck Centenary 1878-1978 Report’, November 1978). An example of the attention to historical detail on the plans is the inclusion of the following useful information about the original vessel … Tonnage….1,693 G.R.T., 1,624 N.R.T. Dimensions, Builders….Charles Connell & Co., Ltd., Scotstoun, 1873. Owners….General Shipping Co., Glasgow, (Aitken Lilburn & Co., Ltd.), and the ship’s fate. The plans, in conjunction with the scale Ship Model of the LOCH ARD also on display, are of interpretive significance to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village. The plans provide historical and technological context to artefacts from the shipwreck, increasing understanding and appreciation of those objects. Flagstaff Hill’s collection of artefacts from LOCH ARD is significant for being one of the largest collections of artefacts from this shipwreck in Victoria. It is significant for its association with the shipwreck, which is on the Victorian Heritage Register (VHR S417). The collection is significant because of the relationship between the objects, as together they have a high potential to interpret the story of the LOCH ARD. The LOCH ARD collection is archaeologically significant as the remains of a large international passenger and cargo ship. The LOCH ARD collection is historically significant for representing aspects of Victoria’s shipping history and its potential to interpret sub-theme 1.5 of Victoria’s Framework of Historical Themes (living with natural processes). The collection is also historically significant for its association with the LOCH ARD, which was one of the worst and best known shipwrecks in Victoria’s history.Model ship plans for building the LOCH ARD. The three sets of plans are presented in a textured cream card folder with the supplier’s details and an oval cameo drawing of the LOCH ARD. The plans are detailed and drawn to scale. They and printed on good quality paper with details, scale and legends. The author Henry John Webb (1846-1893) was an English botanist and agriculturalist who worked in scientific ways, described as thorough, to improve many aspects of farming, such as promoting a scientific system for making butter. He became a very successful Principal of Aspatria Agricultural College in northern England, which was set up for the training and education of farmers and farm labourers. He also held world records as a cyclist and tricyclist. This book is part of Flagstaff Hill's Pattison Collection. Longmans, Green & Co. published several of Webb's technical books. The publisher firm, Longmans, Green & Co, was originally founded in 1724 in London by Thomas Longman under the name Longman. In August of that year, he bought the two shops and goods of William Taylor and set up his publishing house there at 39 Paternoster Row. The shops were called Black Swan and Ship, and it is said that the 'ship' sign was the inspiration for Longman's Logo. After many changes of name and management, the firm was incorporated in 1926 as Longmans, Green & Co. Pty Ltd. The firm was acquired by Pearson in 1968 and was known as Pearson Longman or Pearson PLC. Interestingly, the logo in some books, such as “Steam Turbines 2nd edition, published in 1922” has the year “1724” but the logo in books such as “Advanced Agricultur, published in 1894” has the year “1726” in the logo.The book is significant for showing the technical advancement in agriculture att the end of the 19th century and can be used to trace the evolution of agricultural methods and machinery since that time. The book is significant for its connection to the publisher Longmans, Green and Co., of London, a firm that has been established for over two centuries, renowned for publishing encyclopedias, dictionaries, books on English grammar, textbooks, poetry, reference books, novels, magazines and more. The book has additional importance for its connection to the Pattison Collection, which, along with other items at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village, was originally part of the Warrnambool Mechanics' Institutes’ Collection. The Warrnambool Mechanics’ Institute book collection has historical and social significance for its strong association with the Mechanics Institute movement and its important role in people's intellectual, cultural and social development throughout the latter part of the nineteenth century and the early twentieth century. The collection of books is a rare example of an early lending library and its significance is enhanced by the survival of an original collection of many volumes. Previously the first Union bank was built in c 1888 on the corner Victoria Place & Main street and designed by designed by G. C. Inskip.
