William Grant Junior was President of the Shire of Bacchus Marsh in 1901 when the Australian Colonies federated to become a federal nation state. Grant was a member of a prominent local family and was active in public affairs throughout his life. The federation of the Australian Colonies was a turning point in Australian history and as such its achievement was celebrated in a range of ways. A major step towards achieving Federation was the referendum of July 1899 which saw five of the six Australian colonies vote in favor of Federation, with Western Australia later voting in favor in 1900.Printed poster sized document certifying that William Grant of Bacchus Marsh voted in a referendum of Victorian electors on 27th the July 1899 on the question of an Australian Federal Constitution. The Miners License was first issued Sept. 1851. It cost 30/- per month regardless of whether gold was found or not. Enforcement by troopers was extremely harsh. Miners protested against this license, initially peacefully but eventually this dissatisfaction resulted in the Eureka Stockade uprising in 1854, following which the License was abandoned in favor of the Miner's Right. The McCormick name in farm machinery dates back to Cyrus McCormick, who produced the first successful reaper in 1831. McCormick's company was one of the pieces that eventually became International Harvester. International renamed their new 10-20 and 15-30 tractors as McCormick-Deering in 1923. "MR JOHN WHYKES AT THE ODD FELLOWS’ HALL. Mr John Whykes addressed an enthusi astic meeting of the ratepayers of the South Ward last evening, at the Oddfellows’ Hall, Albert street. Mr C. A. Welch was voted to the chair. The candidate, who was well received, explained his views on municipal matters. His remarks were received with favor, and were frequently applauded. Several questions were put and answered to the satisfaction of the meeting. A vote of cofidencc was passed, on the motion of Mr A. Reynolds, seconded by Mr Bromley. The meeting terminated with a vote of thanks to the chair. The Ballarat Observatory was established by James Oddie. It was later given to the Ballarat School of Mines, then the City of Ballarat.A number of Miners' Rights made out to James Oddie of Ballarat, for a block of land in Magpie Street, Mount Pleasant, used as the Ballarat Observatory. The red 1995 Miners' Right includes land at Dana Street with red writing over it regarding its transferal. The Observatory Registration in No 19578 with the situation of residence area being 'Magpie Street Mount Pleasant 209 feet x 52 feet" The District and Division is Central D Ballarat. Because Detlef Moeckelmann was blind, and his sense of hearing was getting gradually weaker, and his old mother had continuous illness, and it was hoped that the German Club and Court King of the Forest could do a little extra for him. The German Club were not in favor of granting extra assistance for an indefinite period. The German Club voted the money, which was dispatched by the next mail. Mr. Detlef Moeckelmann lost his eyesight through an explosion of gunpowder.
