The Hamilton-Smith collection was donated by the children of Grace Mary Hamilton-Smith nee Ellwood (1911-2004) and John Hamilton-Smith (1909-1984) who settled in Wodonga in the 1940s. The Ellwood family had lived in north-east Victoria since the late 1800s. Grace’s mother, Rosina Ellwood nee Smale, was the first teacher at Baranduda in 1888, and a foundation member of the C.W.A. Rosina and her husband Mark retired to Wodonga in 1934. Grace and John married at St. David’s Church, Albury in 1941. John was a grazier, and actively involved in Agricultural Societies. The collection contains significant items which reflect the local history of Wodonga, including handmade needlework, books, photographs, a wedding dress, maps, and material relating to the world wars. This photograph is of Gertrude Foord (1885-1968), an aunt on the Hamilton-Smith family tree. Much of the needlework and textiles in the Hamilton-Smith collection belonged to Gertrude. This image shows part of a street procession moving along one of the main streets of Bacchus Marsh, probably Main Street Bacchus Marsh. A sign partially obscured on a shop in the background reads 'Yanke....'. Other images of this street parade reveal this sign to be an advertisement for 'Dixons Great Yankee Doodle' a popular brand of tobacco in Australia in the 1900s. The style of people's clothing in the picture suggests it is from around the 1890s or 1900s. The event associated with the street parade is not known. It is possibly part of the Bacchus Marsh branch of the Australian Natives Association (A.N.A,) annual sports festival which was held over the Easter period. Newspaper reports in the Bacchus Marsh Express in the 1900s report details of the various floats, themes and characters in the A.N.A annual sports event and they align to some degree with the people and activities in this image, and other similar images of street parades in Bacchus Marsh at this time. One digital file acquired from State Library of Victoria. Marianne Hardridge married James Maggs and had 11 children. They began orcharding on Wonga Road when there was nothing but bush. Over the years it became one of the largest orchards, and they were also one of the largest families in the district. As well as helping on the land Marianne took up nursing and as Nurse Maggs brought over 500 children into the world in the Ringwood area. This was in the early 1900s when there was no doctor, no dentist, no hospital or chemist in the area.Nurses case containing black velvet cape, white apron, and measuring glass in box: Brown case with split opening lid revealing a 2 black velvet cape, with frilled edge, 3 white cotton apron, and 4 a small black box containing 5 a measuring glass +Additional Keywords: Maggs, James / Hardridge, MarianneOn case - Beatzall Cases Australia (manufacturers logo) Inside Hand written M.A.Maggs, Clive Street ,Mitcham

This image shows part of a street procession moving along Main Street Bacchus Marsh. The location is in front of the Mechanics Institute building. Two connected tricycles can be seen in the foreground. The Bacchus Marsh Express on 9 April 1904 described an ANA Sports day procession which included "two tricycles which were used for an ingenious travesty of a motor car". The same report also described two characters mounted on horses who were dressed as 'Beefeaters'. Beefeaters, are officially known as Yeomen Warders. They are the ceremonial guardians of the Tower of London in England. They originated in 1485 and the ceremonial style of dress most associated with them resembles that worn by the man on horseback in this image. The two Bacchus Marsh 'Beefeaters identified by the Express in 1904 were C. Fagg and P.A. McFarlane giving a clue to the identity of the man on horseback in this image. The style of people's clothing in the picture suggests it is from around the 1890s or 1900s, and the presence of the Tricycle suggests it could be 1904. The event associated with the street parade is not known for certain. But from descriptions in the Bacchus Marsh Express in the 1900s it appears it is part of the Bacchus Marsh branch of the Australian Natives Association (A.N.A,) annual sports festival which was held over the Easter period. The Border Inn Hotel is located at 141 Main Street Bacchus Marsh. It was established in 1850 and is still operating. It is one of the oldest hotels in Victoria. The original building was first constructed by John Pilmer who came from the border district of Scotland. The hotel has seen major additions and some changes in design over its more than 175 year history. This image dates from around the late 1890s or early 1900s. In 1904 a second storey was constructed above the west wing (right side of picture). The absence of this feature indicates this image was made prior to 1904. A historical and architectural assessment of the Border Inn was included in the 1994-1995 Bacchus Marsh Heritage study by Richard Peterson and Daniel Catrice.
