These four items came from the wedding cake made for the 1942 wedding of Ena Todd and Jack Heazlewood. Mary Josephine (Ena) Todd was born in Warrnambool in 1920 and was a hairdresser at Josephine’s Salon in Warrnambool. When she married Jack Heazlewood he was a stoker on the H.M.A.S. Sydney. They later lived in Sydney. Wedding cakes today often continue to be decorated with items similar to these. These cake decorations are of interest as examples of wedding ornaments of the mid 20th century and as mementoes of the 1942 wedding of two Warrnambool residents, Ena Todd and Jack Heazlewood. Golden satin ribbon gathered over a cardboard horseshoe shape. Light cream embroidered ribbon, 68 cms long, forms a loop, and is attached to the horseshoe with a bow. A floral arrangement of two leaves and five small "berries" decorates the horseshoe. Merle's Grandparents, Alice and Charles Geuer were married in 1892, celebrating their Wedding in 1942. Lemon coloured ribbon, 2.5 cm wide, hand stitched and gathered, over a horseshoe shape - possibly a cardboard shape. A narrow .5cm lemon ribbon bow is attached at the centre top and extends into a 70cm (total length then folded in half) to make a 35cm loop, to hang over the arm. Through the address on the box, this dress has a local connection. Miss Mavis Hedrick operated a dress salon at 162 Liebig St Warrnambool in the 1940's. Her parents lived at various houses in Warrnambool, including Skene, Spence and Princess Sts. She married John William Freeman in 1942 and left Warrnambool some time after that date. From wedding reports of the day it doesn't seem that this is Miss Hedrick's wedding dress. It seems more likely that it was purchased from her frock salon in Liebig St Warrnambool.While the owner and original wearer of this dress has eluded us, the dress has a strong link to Warrnambool through the original box with its identifying labels. The dress is very much in the style of the era of Miss Hedrick's dress shop..This cream silk wedding dress and slip was donated in original cardboard box with the address written in large letters on the front. The dress is cream silk with gold metallic trim in two lines across the bodice.There are silk covered buttons on the front and back of the bodice and it has a high rounded V neckline.It has long lily point sleeves .There is a side opening with hook and eye fastening.The skirt is cut on the cross and a small train flows from the back of the dress. A simple A line slip accompanies the dress. It has ribbon shoulder straps and the top is edged in a fine narrow lace. The large box is rectangular and grey in colour. The addressee's name is written in large lettering in black (possibly crayon) . A label is pasted to the top right hand corner. This wedding dress came from the estate of Ena Heazlewood. Born in Warrnambool in 1920 Mary Josephine (Ena) Todd was a hairdresser at Josephine’s Salon in Warrnambool. In 1942 she married a Warrnambool man, Jack Heazlewood, a stoker on the H.M.A.S. Sydney at the time. She was wearing this wedding dress. The dress was also worn by two other brides – Ena’s sister-in-law. Mavis McDonald when she married Jim Heazlewood in December 1942 and her sister Rita Todd when she married Bill Kane in 1947 (the bodice of the dress was altered for Rita’s wedding). The photograph shows the wedding of Field James (Jim) Heazlewood and Mavis Marie McDonald who were married on 23/12/1942This dress is of of some significance as it is not only a lovely example of a 1940s wedding dress but it has local provenance, being worn by a Warrnambool person, Ena Todd when she married another Warrnambool identity, Jack Heazlewood in 1942. This is a white lace dress with a fitted bodice, a square neckline and a lace band at the waist edged with satin. The dress has set-in long sleeves with a press stud clips at the wrists. The waist at the back has a loose band of lace material. The skirt is slightly flared and is floor length at the front with a cotton net frill edging, now slightly tattered. The dress at the back has a wide rounded train with a net frill edging. The side ends of the train have inserted lace panels. On Thursday evening, a social evening was tendered to Miss Sweeney, at Mrs. T. Jewell's residence Main street, by the choir and parishioners of St. Mary's Church, Eltham, where Miss Sweeney has for some years acted as choir mistress. Mr. Harold Cox, in handing her a handsome gold and oak silver salad bowl and service, expressed the heartiest good wishes to one who had not only labored so strenuously in organising the choir, but had been always foremost in promoting church and public movements in the community. Congratulatory addresses were also contributed by the Rev. F. Norris and Mr. W. P. McMahon. Miss Sweeney sincerely thanked the donors for their beautiful present, and the speakers for the many kind things said in her regard. She felt very much severing her connection with Eltham. Hooley (nee Miss Ellen Sweeney) a very dear and capable teacher at State Schools in Eltham and other districts, including the Western District. The deceased was one of Nature's ladies, and was a native of Eltham having been born in the historic home, Culla Hill, one of the first settlements on the Yarra. She passed peacefully away on Anzac Day, April 26. The. funeral was the largest and most impressive ever seen in Eltham, and left St. Mary's Church after a requiem mass conducted by Rev. Father Morrison and Father Hollis. The pall bearers were mostly girlhood friends. POSTCARD 1905-1940s Like the carte-de-visite, postcards enjoyed a collecting craze by large numbers of people, and were often kept in albums through which the interested visitor could browse. Postcards were posted or exchanged in huge numbers. Postal authorities in Australia only allowed the private printing of postcards from 1898. At this time the back of the card was reserved for the address and postage stamp, and the front was used for the message and a picture. In 1902 British authorities allowed a "divided back", so that the left side could be used for the message, the right side for the address and stamp, and the whole of the front was devoted to the picture. Wedding dress worn by May Dunne who was married on 11 April 1942 at the Newtown Methodist Church in Aberdeen Street, Geelong. The lace was purchased with wartime coupons. This wedding dress was worn by two Brighton brides, sisters Floss and Vera McMinn, during the Second World War. The McMinn family moved to Brighton from Castlemaine around 1924, when the sisters were still children. Their father, Horace Henry McMinn, was a fruiterer and greengrocer who ran the Fruit Palace at 123 Church Street. Florence May "Floss" McMinn (1912-2007) married William Thomas Vivian on 3 February 1940 at the Brighton Church of Christ. Her sister Vera was her bridesmaid. Vera Olive McMinn (1918-2006) wore the same dress two years later when she married Geoffrey Walter Holmes on 15 August 1942 at Scotch College Chapel.Cream silk wedding dress with a long train. Photo of a girl that lived at Holmbush dressed for her wedding. The bridesmaid may also be a resident of Holmbush. The man in one photo is likely to be another resident. If this bride was the same as in the newspaper article that was in the album, it gives the name of the bride as Lexie Curtin and the bridesmaid as Nora Southern. The groom was Dr John Ferguson who was also a member of Legacy for some years. The wedding was held at St Patrick's Cathedral. Holmbush at 1267 Burke road, was one of the properties that Legacy used for Junior Legatees. It was purchased 1942.
