Pair of commemorative leadlight and stained-glass windows fitted in the stairwell of Leongatha Memorial Hall. The scene, which extends across both windows, features five people representing each of the armed forces standing on a cliff in the foreground overlooking the sea. In the first window (1939), a tank on land, a ship in the sea and two planes in the sky represent the beginning of the war. The clouds in this window are large, dark and ominous. In the second window (1945), a small boy wearing a hat and shirts stands separate from the group of servicepeople, he holds a teddy in one hand and waves an Australian flag in the other. From 1988 to 2021, Legacy held a public speaking contest for young secondary school students. It was initially called the Junior Plain English Speaking Award (JPESA) and later called Legacy Junior Public Speaking Award (LJPSA). Schools were eligible to send along up to 4 representatives to compete in a preliminary round. This is a photo of two men presenting certificates to two schoolgirls. On the left is Ray Maddocks, National Director of Plain English Speaking Award. The following was taken from a programme in 1996: "The Award aim is to promote enhanced oral communication skills for 12-14 year old students and to help young people appreciate the ideals of Legacy - voluntary service, caring and comradeship - and the need for remembrance. It began in 1988 in the Melbourne area with the support of the Ministry of Education and The Plain English Foundation. Entries have grown from 24 in the 1988 competition to over 300 in schools across the State, plus greater numbers participating in the process of selecting four contestants from each school. In 1995, a successful Interstate Championship was held with contestants from Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland. Robin Kelly was born Robin Vandersluys in Mary Street, Kew. As a child, she sang in backyard concerts run with her brother, Leslie. The family moved to Deepdene in 1949 and Robin joined church and school choirs. Later she was to study classical singing with Stella Power, modern singing with Jack White, TV Presentation with Natalie Raine of Crawford Productions and acting/singing with Jessie Matthews. Following her victory in a talent quest at the Orama Ballroom, she was invited to join the Orama Big Band with singers Harry Cox and Arlene Forrest. She also sang with the Kerm Jones Jazz Band at Power House and with Frank Johnson's Jazz Band at Jazz Junction. Robin became resident band vocalist at the historic Federal Hotel in Collins Street with the Rudi Laquer Trio. She also sang at The Savoy Plaza with the George Cadman Trio. A year later she became resident vocalist at the Ress Oriental Hotel with the Lennie Holmes Trio. Later, Robin married pianist Peter Jones, singing under the name 'Robin Vanser' in clubs in Sydney and regional New South Wales. She was booked for a Vietnam War tour and also sang in Tahiti. Returning to Melbourne, her agent booked her to appear in shows in Tasmania including West Point Casino and Melbourne country venues. Another agent, John Bishop, booked her to do floor shows in Melbourne, including Xmas Seasons at the Hampton Hotel where she entertained audiences with her comedy and audience participation routines. In 1971, Robin Kelly retired to run her Robin Hood Antiques business in Canterbury, during which time she was married to tenor Glenn Kelly. Later she joined Sing Australia Camberwell Choir, performing as a soloist at their Melbourne Town Hall Concert.The Vandersluys-Kelly Collection of photographs, costumes and musical performance memorabilia was donated to the Kew Historical Society by Robin Denise Kelly in 2018. The collection is an important record of stage and recorded performances in Australia in the second half of the 20th century. A Legacy ceremony at the Shrine of Remembrance. It shows a group of school girls with wreaths sitting on the steps. It is one of the annual "Anzac Commemoration Ceremony for Students" events, held just prior to ANZAC Day. The ceremony provides a valuable opportunity for students to gain an appreciation of the Anzac spirit, the significance of the Shrine and the meaning of Anzac Day. Was with 01193.1 which shows school children with wreaths approaching the Shrine. And 01193.3 is the procession of school children up the steps to lay their wreaths in the Inner Shrine. See also 01194 which is a close up of the son of soldier wearing his fathers medals, which was the same date. Were in an envelope with other photos and programmes from different School Student ceremonies. The 1st Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (1 RAR) completed two tours of South Vietnam between 1965 and 1969. This set of 11 colour photographs of a Ceremonial Guard of Honour from the Army Survey Regiment was most likely taken at Russell Offices, Canberra in 1995. Most Guard of Honour detachments sent to Canberra performed the ceremony in the Blamey Square at Defence’s Russell Offices precinct.
