Fort Queenscliff was established in 1860 when an open battery was constructed on Shortland's Bluff to defend the Port Phillip Bay entrance. The Fort, which underwent major redevelopment in the late 1870s and 1880s, became the headquarters for an extensive chain of forts around Port Phillip Heads. Its garrison included volunteer artillery, engineers, infantry and naval militia, and it was manned as a coastal defence installation continuously from 1883 to 1946. The other fortifications and armaments around the Heads were completed by 1891, and together made Port Phillip one of the most heavily defended harbours in the British Empire. It is claimed that the first British Empire artillery shots of World War One were fired when a gun at Fort Nepean fired across the bow of the German freighter Pfalz, as she was attempting to escape to sea. The orders to fire came from Fort Queenscliff. It is alleged that the same gun, with a different barrel, also fired the first Australian artillery shot of World War II. By 1946 coastal artillery was outmoded, and the Fort became home of Army's Staff College. Functional object - Kerosene Lantern, Nier Feuerhand Company, Germany, c. 1930
This lantern was made about 1930 by the Nier Feuerhand Company of Germany. Hermann Nier began making miners' lamps and household lanterns in the 1870s in East Germany and in 1893 he and his brother Ernst founded the Nier Feuerhand Company. By 1930 this company was the world's largest producer of household lanterns and after an interruption in World War Two it was re-established in West Germany and continued until the 1990s with the trade name still in use today. Feuerhand lanterns were used extensively in countries such as Australia because of his strong lighting qualities and its ability to stay alight in external conditions.This lantern has no known local provenance but is retained because it is a fine example of the type of household lighting used in Australian homes, farms and businesses in the 19th and early 20th centuries.This is a kerosene lantern with a metal base and frame holding a plain glass mantle open at the top. A metal handle is attached to loops at the top of the frame. There is a wooden handle at the top to assist in the removal of the glass mantle. The base has an opening with a screw top for the filling with kerosene or other heating liquid and also a rotating wheel on the side for controlling the size of the flame. The glass has printing and a logo etched on to it and the base has printing and a logo. Carl Hermann Nier in 1877 a silverware maker started to produce miners lamps and household lanterns in Beierfeld, Saxonia, East Germany. In January 1902 he established the Nier-Feuerh and company in his home town to produce kerosene lanterns. Carl's three sons Bruno, Curt and Woldemar Nier made the company into the largest lantern producer in the 1930s with Bruno Nier holding many patents for lamps. Lantern production was interrupted by World War II and ceased at the end of 1944 because of the shortage of materials and the advancing Russian army. After the Second World War the company restart the lantern production in 1947 at Luedenscheid and Hohenlockstedt north of Hamburg and fully re-establishing the company in 1950. A domestic item with an interesting history that now is sought after by collectors giving an insight into how hurricane kerosene lamps came into being from a manufacturer in Germany that held numerous patents for oil lamps from 1902 until 1940.Kerosene Lamp with handle, blue in colour, badly rusted. Lamp shade has lever to lift so you can light. Shows Glenferrie Road, near Linda St looking south, c1915 prior to the construction of the Railway overpass at Glenferrie Railway Station with H class tram 58 in the view. The tram line was constructed in 1913. It would appear that the level crossing gates are closed in the photograph. The building on the right-hand side by the horse-drawn cart was an ANZ bank until 2021. The closer building, a theatre (The Palace) has since been demolished and is now a Coles Supermarket. The level crossing was replaced with an overbridge in April 1916. The church in the background is the Immaculate Conception Church, without the spires - built after WW1. Yields information about the location, the streetscape and the tram, vehicles in use at the time. Printed Debenture for "The Prahran and Malvern Tramways Trust", No. 539, for 500 Pounds, B Series, entitling the Bearer to the sum of 500 pounds on 31/3/1914. Has the paper seal of the PMTT applied, signed by Alex Cameron, Henry Barnes and W. O. Strangward. Has a perforated edge along the right hand side. Was printed for issuing on 1/1/1913, but has a stamp in the top right corner issuing on 1/7/1913. Also has a red stamp on the lower edge "Produced for Jul 10th" Has been punched by machine stating "The Melbourne Tramways Trust is now the owner of this Debenture which has ceased to be transferable by virtue of the provisions of the Melbourne Tramways Trust Act 1903" and "CANCELLED". John Gartner was a fine printer and publisher, an author, a noted philatelist, and also collector of Australian banknotes and coins. He was born on 16 July 1914 and was largely self-educated, leaving school at fourteen for work following the death of his father. Gartner developed a strong interest in the history of typography and printing and was apprenticed at the Advocate where his father had been a linotype operator. Aged 17, Gartner bought a hand press and some fonts of type, and in 1937 acquired a platen press from which he set and printed his private press books, published under the imprint of The Hawthorn Press. Gartner had a strong collection of Australian bookplates. He also looked at the work of artists overseas and commissioned personal plates. He subsequently built an international collection with preference for artists who printed from wood.
