Embarked overseas on 3/2/1941 with the 2/6 Battalion. Embarked for Greece on 9/4/1941 and reported missing on 2/6/1941 Captured in Greece and sent to German POW work camp Stalag XVIIIA. Returned to Australia 24/7/45 and discharged on 25/8/1945. WW1 British War medal issued to Private Jep Francis Kenny 3041 Born at Thoona the family moved to Peechelba. At the age of 18 1/2 he enlisted on 16/7/1915 at Yarrawonga and assigned to the 6th Battalion. He embarked overseas on 29/9/1919 and transferred to the 57th Battalion on 15/3/1916. ‘A’ Squadron 8/13 Victorian Mounted Rifles conducted a parade at Buna Barracks, Albury on Sunday 1 May 1988 to mark the 103rd Anniversary of the formation of the Victorian Mounted Rifles and the 40th Anniversary of the linking of the 8th (Indi), 13th (Gippsland) and 20th (Victorian Mounted Rifles) Light Horse Regiments to form the 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles. Colonel G K Howard, Director of the Royal Australian Armoured Corps was the Reviewing Officer. The Pipes and Drums of the 5th/6th Battalion Royal Victorian Regiment provided the music for the occasion. The 39th Battalion, The Hawthorn Kew Regiment was allied with The Dorsetshire Regiment (British Army) in 1931. It is believed that as a token of friendship to commemorate the alliance, the officers of The Dorsets gifted the officers of the 39th Battalion with a number of their mess dress jackets which the 39th then adopted as a unit-specific mess dress; using their unit badges and Australian Army accoutrements.
