The dress - a typical style of that period - was made by her sister Chris Britton (nee A'Vard). Chris and Jill grew up on a farm in Emerald in the 1940s - 1960s. Jill has been the graphic designer of several local history books. This dress speaks to bridal fashion of that time as well as to a longer tradition of wedding dresses being hand-made.Long dress with a train. Empire line style with a fitted bodice and long sleeves with four buttons at the end of each sleeve. High collar. Dress made of a cream-coloured satin material with a check pattern. Menzies Creek does not run to Gembrook; it diverges from Woori Yallock Creek at Butterfield Reserve in Emerald and then runs to the town of Menzies Creek. This makes it more likely that this photograph is from Emerald or Menzies Creek, with the annotation on the reverse suggesting it was near A'Vard Park (where Menzies Creek intersects A'Vard Road) and therefore in Emerald. It is part of Melbourne's V.S.M. (Victoria Stamp Market) Series, printed in Prussia, Germany alongside several similar hand-coloured postcards in our collection. This postcard is believed to originate from c. 1905, but the image itself - depicting a gold washing bath on Menzies Creek - might be older. Gold mining in Emerald was most popular in the 1850s and 60s. However, gold mining on Menzies Creek reopened in the 1890s depression, which is a more likely source of this photograph. This postcard is significant for its relative uniqueness as a colourised depiction of Emerald's gold mining history. This item is a hand-coloured photographic postcard. The reverse has empty message, stamp, and address sections, with a small handwritten annotation in pencil and printed publication information. The photograph is accompanied by a printed caption in the bottom-left. It depicts a walking track running alongside a channel or creek, with both approaching from the centre of the background to the left of the foreground. They are surrounded on either side by trees, shrubs, and ferns. The paper of the reverse is slightly yellowed.Obverse, Caption: "Track through Bush, Gembrook" Reverse: Handwritten Annotation: "Water race along the Menzies Creek / near A'Vard Park. / GOLD" Printed Label, Vertical: "Printed in Prussia" Printed Label, Horizontal: "V.S.M. That team may be off-camera in this photograph, preparing to pull the wagon of logs pictured. His business was operational by 1913, but it is unclear precisely when this photo was taken. The photo is said to have been taken at the Red Mill, which is on 62 Monbulk Road, Belgrave and opened in 1925 as the Belgrave Kiosk and Dance Palais. This is a photograph of a notable Emerald resident, capturing early 20th century transportation methods. This item is a printed black and white photograph on modern photo paper. It was known as The Corner Store. The owners in chronological order were Le Juge, Jones, Stewart, Elwood, Searles and Russo. This invoice donated by the daughter of its recipient is dated 28 November 1974 at a time when Searles were the proprietors. It shows the customer was allowed to carry a small debt. The donor recalled that a number of Emerald people, including her parents, were not well off and were allowed to do this by the store. The invoice also has a list of items for sale at that time. This 1970's Emerald general store invoice invites some interesting comparisons with present-day supermarkets in relation to what they stock and how they relate to customers. It may have assisted on the A'Vard fields, or in any number of tasks that were unable to be completed with only human labour. This hook is a prime example of the many tools farmers in Emerald and its surrounding agricultural areas used around their properties to ease the strain of manual labour. Puffing Billy Preservation Society; Belgrave (Vic); 1980. 64 p.; illus; map. ...Victoria's narrow gauge railways were from Wangaratta to Whitfield (covering 30.5 miles/49 km) opening in 1899, Colac to Beech Forest (29 miles/46.7 km) opening in 1902 with an addition to Crowes (14.1 miles/22.7 km) opening in 1910, Upper Ferntree Gully to Gembrook (18.2 miles/29.3 km) opening in 1900, and Moe to Walhalla (26 miles/41.3 km) opening in 1910. From the outset these narrow gauge lines proved very uneconomical in operation and were plagued with continuing financial losses. The lines most difficult to work were those carrying the most business, and in particular the trains from Colac and Moe with their 1 in 30 grades and countless curves precluded having engines with large coupled driving wheels operating. Having examined the possible use of articulated locomotives to reduce operating costs on the narrow gauge lines the Victorian Railways decided upon the Beyer-Garratt type of locomotive in 1925 and an order was placed in England for two engines of the 2-6-0 plus 0-6-2 wheel arrangements. These arrived in April 1926. Assembly of the new Garratts was duly completed and steaming trials carried out at Newport, Victoria, the engines being classed as "G" and given the running numbers "41" and "42". G41 was taken to Colac where, on 5 June 1926, it was put to work on the Colac-Beech Forest-Crowes line. G42 soon followed and duly began work on the equally steep and tortuous but shorter Moe-Walhalla line. Following the closure of the Moe line in 1955 G42 was refurbished and went to Colac. G41 was overhauled, but not as thoroughly as G42, at then returned to Colac where both Garratts shared regular work on the line until its closure in 1962. From 1978 G42 continues its operation on the Upper Ferntree Gully-Gembrook line as part of the Puffing Billy Preservation Society.G42: Puffing Billy's Big Brother. The photograph itself was produced in the 21st century. ...The trough pictured was erected outside of Tim Kennedy's La Belle guest house in Emerald, from at least the 1930s. It allowed travellers at the guest house to water their horses, with water pumped from underground with a hand pump. It was likely installed by Charles A'Vard. The photograph itself was produced in the 21st century.Water troughs like the one pictured were once available everywhere; the memory of this one is a memory of the time when much transport still occurred under horsepower. This item is a colour photograph of a concrete water trough, standing on dry flat ground with a fence and then trees in the background. The trough stands on six concrete legs, with a metal pipe emerging from the ground to follow the rightmost foreground leg to a semicircular upper concrete section at the rightmost end of the trough. Some elements of the trough have chipped away but it is mostly intact. The reverse of the printed photograph features regular FujiFilm logos and a section of annotation, handwritten in blue pen.Handwritten annotation: "Water trough © 1930. / Was situated out side "la Belle" guest house / Main Rd. Sack or bag hooks were designed to make carrying these heavy bags far easier. The pointed end was sharp enough to pierce a woven bag and the handle was designed to fit ergonomically into the palm of a farmer's hand. This saved them from having to bend to pick the bags up or strain their fingers by gripping the necks of many bags over the course of a long and laborious day. Many sack hooks had a wooden handle which was attached to the shank later in the construction process, but the A'Vard family's hook is made from one continuous piece of iron, likely shaped with a tool by a local blacksmith in the early-mid 20th century. This hook is a prime example of the many tools farmers in Emerald and its surrounding agricultural areas used around their properties to ease the strain of manual labour. Prior to the mass mechanisation of farms, difficult tasks were done by hand, and any tool that could assist in their completion would have been greatly valued. A large, rusted iron or steel hook, tapered to a sharp point at one end. The other end of the hook's shank is wrapped into a large handle.emerald, a'vard family, 20th century, 1940s, farming -

Her daughter believes it was the first watch her mother ever owned. At that time, a person's first watch would represent a rite of passage into a more adult world. It would usually be expensive and well-made and would be intended to last decades. A watch movement with 17 jewels is considered a fully jeweled watch. This is a mechanical watch - it stored energy in its mainspring and required daily winding to ensure it kept reliable time unlike modern battery watches. This watch is a reminder of the significance of one's first watch and of the technology of watches in the mid-20th century.Lady's watch with a rectangular face. Stainless steel case and beveled dome and chain band. Gold hands with gold Arabic numerals (even numbers) alternating with simple bar markers (for the odd numbers). On face: '17 jewels'mary a'vard, emerald
