A View at Linton, Sussex Street, Linton, view to south ...The "Lorna, Bob and Elsie" in the inscription are probably Elsie McCorkell, her son Robert Hayward, and her daughter Lorna McCorkell.A very small photograph which has been made into a souvenir/postcard. The photograph is a view of Sussex Street, Linton, looking south-west. On the right of the photo are Ching's store, R. N. Sandow confectionery shop, a house next to it, and the first Bank of NSW building. Two houses are further down the road past Gillespie Street. On the left of the photo are the Edinburgh Bakery and a store with a verandah on the corner of Gillespie Street. The photograph is glued to a beige-coloured card which has a decorative edge cut into it. A printed border surrounds the photograph, and the words "A View at Linton" are printed underneath it. The card appears to have had the right-hand edge trimmed with scissors. Because of this, an inscription on the back of the card has been partially cut away. Black and white copy of original photograph which shows the shop in Sussex Street owned by J. H. Morgan, the shop and dwelling owned by Richard Ching (telegraph pole in front), and the shop and dwelling owned by Annie Brown (née Nicholls). A small building between Ching's and Brown's shops may be the workshop of Dan McMillan, bootmaker. What appears to be a laneway between the Morgan shop and the Ching dwelling was once occupied by the Surface Hill Hotel (demolished c.1911). Shops in Sussex Street, Linton, c.1922: Morgan's, Ching's, Brown's. The original Bank of New South Wales building (by 1922 a private residence owned by the Lewers family) can just be seen further along the street, screened by a large tree.On reverse:"J. H. Information in the "Linton - Sussex Street East Side (Title Searches)" file shows that Mrs Violet Annie Shepherd bought the property next to the garage in 1939.Black and white photograph which shows Bennett Bros service station (a brick building), next to Shepherd's "greengrocer and confectionery" store (a weatherboard building), in Sussex Street, Linton. There are two petrol bowsers outside the garage, and a car parked in the street in front of Shepherd's shop. This photograph was owned by George Preston, the apprentice printing worker shown third from the left in the photograph. The photograph was given to the Society by his son Ronald Preston. The printing works site was in Sussex Street, Linton, understood to have been next to the Railway Hotel. The photograph is believed to have been taken around 1895 or 1896, when George Preston was thirteen. Vera Johnson, the wife of James Eccles Johnson, lived in Linton from about 1935 until the 1950s. The Johnsons lived in the house in Sussex Street formerly owned by the Donaldson family. Vera Johnson was an active member of the Linton community - her name is mentioned in records of the Presbyterian Church, and also in records of the CWA Linton Branch. She was an enthusiastic gardener and regularly supplied flowers for the church. She had two children of her own (Eric and Betty), and often provided care for her nieces, Shirley and Elizabeth (Beth) Lock, who lived with her for extended periods when their mother was ill. Vera and James Johnson were connected through marriage to the Rankin family.Black and white copy of original photograph of Vera Johnson. Dr Donaldson (Snr) owned the block of land on the corner of Sussex and Grant Streets, Linton. He had a ten-room house set on the back of the block (where the block backs on to Surrey Street), with a large barn fronting Sussex Street. Other identifiable buildings in the photograph are Ball Brothers blacksmith's shop, the Royal Standard Hotel on the corner of Sussex and Clyde Streets, the Shire Hall, Criterion House and Joseph Shepherd's store. The roof of Oscar Ball's house can be seen.Black and white copy of original photograph which shows houses and other buildings along Sussex Street. The view is to the south (up the hill) from the Ballarat entrance to Linton. A large barn, enclosed by a picket fence, is in the foreground.
