The School of Mines Ballarat began in 1870. It's location was the south end of Lydiard Street. Ballarat Junior Technical School began in 1913 and was boys only until 1951 when girls were included. They were under the control of the School of Mines Council. In 1967 the were three divisions. Each was internally distinguished. Ballarat School of Industries, Ballarat Technical School and Ballarat Institute of Advanced Education. In 1976 B.I.A.E. merged with State College of Victoria Ballarat - formerly Ballarat Teachers' College to become Ballarat College of Advanced Education, later to become Federation University. Prizes were awarded for first and second placing of these events.In 1923, a Sports Carnival was held in the precincts of what was then a water reserve, situated south of the State School. The area was reserved for watering purposes on 1st May, 1894; and on July 15th, 1912, a small portion was excised. By 1923 its usefulness for water storage had disappeared, and being ideal for recreation purposes, it was decided, at the final meeting of the above sorts carnival, to apply for the area appointed, Mr W Harris (chairman), Messrs. G H Marshall, J Roberts, D Gill, M Connolly, R Vines, E Pocock, and H M Burke (secretary). The matter terminated in a Land Board, presided over by Mr McPherson, being held in Bendigo. The application was granted, but was not gazetted, until Messrs. W Harris and F J Roberts, with Messrs. A E Cook, MLA and Hon. H Keck, MLC interviewed the Minister for Lands. Soon afterwards, at a public meeting, the following members were elected to constitute the first Board of management, Messrs. W Harris (chairman), G H Marshall, A D Holden, F J Roberts (tres.), M D'Araugo, E Wright, and H M Burke (sec.). Since then the arena has been cleared and levelled by residents, and labor and material to the value of 150 pounds have been put into the reserve. Ernest, Alfred, and Otto Wunderlich founded the Wunderlich company in Sydney in 1885. The company expanded into Melbourne with a showroom located in Queen Street, Melbourne. The North Sunshine factory on McIntyre Road opened in 1927 producing glazed terracotta tiles, faience cladding, and later asbestos‑based products including Durabestos sheets and pipes. In 1969, CSR purchased Wunderlich. In 1977 CSR sold the Sunshine site to James Hardie. The factory closed down in 1983. The site was then redeveloped into the Westend Market Hotel and Dan Murphy’s. In the mid‑2010s, a cluster of mesothelioma cases among North Sunshine residents was linked to historical asbestos exposure from the factory.The Sunshine Wunderlich factory was one of Melbourne’s major interwar industrial employers. It contributed to Sunshine’s identity as a manufacturing hub alongside the H.V. McKay / Massey Ferguson Sunshine Harvester Works. This small book records only a very small number of employees who worked at the factory. The Sunshine City Club was established on the 20th September 1956 as the Sunshine Business Men's Club by a group of the district's businessmen including Eugene Thomas "Kinder" Smith, Oscar McKay, Clarence Gibson Carlton, Albert Edward Bolt and William Dinnell. The original clubhouse located at 24 Talmage Street Albion, was a former private residence of David Buchan Ferguson, the Managing Director of the Sunshine Harvester Works / H.V. McKay Massey Harris Pty Ltd. The house was converted into a club room, bar, kitchen and billiard room with a lawn bowls green being established in the early 1960s. In 1975 the rear of the residence was demolished and replaced with new club rooms, bar, kitchen, toilets and change facilities. Club access was restricted to members and guests only. Then in April 1968 the club was registered as The Sunshine City Club, and in the 1980s members formed a Darts Club and a Social Golf Club. Also, in this period the club was given the opportunity to purchase Number 22 Talmage Street which enabled the club to extend its car parking area.​ The early 1980s saw the introduction of ladies as members and they formed a Ladies Bowls Club and entered into the VLBA Pennant Competition; this required some more upgrading of the clubrooms and the installation of proper ladies' facilities. Also, the kitchen was refitted out with new equipment, club flat was renovated into a dining / function room and bar, and the number 2 bowls green was constructed which required the club to place Number 22 and 24 Talmage Street Albion onto the one title. Christ Church was constructed in 1854-57 and designed in Decorated Gothic style by Albert Purchase & Charles Swyer. It was enlarged in 1874 and 1881 to the designs of Sydney W Smith. It is one of four main buildings constructed on land granted to the Church of England in 1855 and named Church Square. The other buildings are the bishop's residence, vicarage and parish hall. Heritage Victoria describes it as a 'rare and significant square in the history of town planning in Victoria which demonstrates the importance of the church to the community'. It is built from rarely used undressed random coursed sandstone from Point King Sorrento. It is located at 14 Acland Street, St Kilda. The triangular rose window is said to have been modelled on Lichfield Cathedral and shows outstanding craftsmanship. According to Heritage Victoria, the only other known example in Victoria is at St Georges Presbyterian Church in East St Kilda, designed by the same architect, Albert Purchas. The Church has a varied collection of stained glass, including work by leading stained glass firms and artists in Victoria in the nineteenth and early twentieth century: Ferguson & Urie, William Montgomery and Brooks Robinson. The 'shipwreck window,' north west transept, is an historically significant memorial window dedicated to Miles and William Dalzell Nicholson, the second and third sons of the Hon. William Nicholson, M.L.A, a Lord Mayor of Melbourne and Premier of Victoria in the 1850s. Miles, died in England on 27 April 1874. His younger brother William died in the wreck of the ‘British Admiral’ off King Island on 23 May 1874. The images show the condition of the church at the time they were taken (c 2012). Signs of deterioration can be seen. non-fictionRob Hansen tells the humble beginnings of the Upper Beaconsfield Cricket Club and the growth of Upper Beaconsfield community, by using among other resources a historic Minute Book, scorebooks, and in excess of twenty person accounts from past and present players. There is a clear 1893 photo showing Upper Beaconsfield's first cricket team including Tom a'Beckett, Hans Glismann, Dave Glismann, Alf Shorthouse, Carl Peterson, Bert Shorthouse, Richard Nobel, Mr Albert, and Mr Curl. The Sunshine City club was founded 20th September 1956 as the Sunshine Businessmen’s Club by local businessmen including Eugene “Kinder” Smith, Oscar McKay, Clarence Gibson Carlton, Albert Edward Bolt, and William Dinnell. The club was located at 24 Talmage Street Albion, in the former private residence of David Buchan Ferguson, Managing Director of Sunshine Harvester Works. In April 1968, the club was officially registered as The Sunshine City Club. During the 1970's and 1980's, the club saw the transition of the club rooms from a converted house to a purpose‑built community clubhouse. In 2025 and 2026 saw the club experience financial difficulties and on 3rd May 2026, Voluntary Administrators were appointed and took control of the club's business and operations.
