This plaque is the name plate of one of Warrnambool's longest serving doctors. Alfred Ernest Brauer came to Warrnambool after graduating from the University of Melbourne in 1927. He initially took up the position as resident medical officer at the Warrnambool Base Hospital before entering private practice. he was appointed honorary medical officer at the hospital and was a life member of the Hospital board , serving as its president from 1952-54.he was a founding member of the South Western Victoria Ambulance service.as vice president, a position he held until his death in 1972.He had wide sporting and community interests including cricket, football, and horseracing. He was a founding member of the Warrnambool Lutheran church and was closely associated with Warrnambool High School and Warrnambool Technical School. he died in September 1972 and was survived by his wife and three daughters. His practice was situated in Koroit StWarrnambool, firstly at Ambleside where he also lived, then later on the other side of the street , in practice with a number of other doctors. A link to one of Warrnambool's longest serving doctors who contributed to the city in a wide range of roles. This bottle has been produced in the Epsom factory of the Bendigo Pottery works and used by Alfred Darby for bottling his ginger beer in the late 1890s. In 1897 Alfred Darby leased the cordial factory in Henna Street,Warrnambool, formerly the McSweeney Cordial Factory (and today the Alderdice Brass Foundry). He used the Maltese Cross as his logo on his bottles. He also had a cordial factory in Rochester, Victoria about the same time. In 1899 Alfred Darby advertised that he had re-located his cordial business to the old ‘Echo’ newspaper building in Koroit Street but it is not known whether the business opened there or if it did, for how long. This ceramic bottle is of interest as one of the late 19th century bottles used by Alfred Darby, a soft drinks manufacturer in Warrnambool. Cordial manufacturing was an important industry in Warrnambool for over 100 years.This is a ceramic brown and buff-coloured ginger beer bottle. It has a black logo in the shape of a Maltese Cross stamped on one side and the maker’s name etched into the clay near the base. This was the House Cup of a Warrnambool private school, Braemar Grammar. It operated from 1931 to 1950 and was in Manifold Street. The school had an average enrolment of 45 primary school students and closed because of the unavailability of suitable school premises. The donor of the House trophy, Dr Alfred Brauer, was born in South Australia and studied medicine at Melbourne University. He had a practice in Koroit Street Warrnambool for 45 years and had many community interests including horse racing, football, golf, cricket and education. He was associated with Warrnambool High School, Braemar Grammar School and Warrnambool Technical School, donating trophies to all three schools. Today the former Warrnambool Technical School is called Brauer College. This cup is of interest as a memento of a 20th century private school in Warrnambool, Braemar Grammar and of a prominent 20th century doctor in Warrnambool, Dr Alfred Brauer.This is a gold-coloured metal cup with two side handles and a long thin stem on a metal base mounted on a Bakelite stand. The Morse telegraph system had its beginnings in 1836 when Samuel Morse, Alfred Vail and Joseph Henry developed an early model of the system. There are a number of variations on the machine but the operating system is very similar in all and the language is a standardised international code which has been in operation since the 1860's. Morse code consists of five elements, dots, dashes, and gaps of one , three and seven units in length. It is still in use to this day and has been applied to other systems of communication such as amateur radio, mobile phones and communication systems for disabled people. This particular telegraph key possibly has post office or naval origins.Morse code was an important invention in world communication systems and this machine therefore has important social and research significance. Alfred Darby leased a cordial factory in Henna Street, Warrnambool in 1897. The Maltese cross was his well known trade mark. In 1899 he tried to start another cordial factory in Koroit Street but was prevented from doing so because it contravened the agreement he had with the owner of the Henna Street building. It is not known when he left Warrnambool but he had an interest in another cordial factory in Rochester, Victoria. This label is of considerable significance as details of Alfred Darby's cordial manufacturing business operations in Warrnambool are scant.Primarily a rectangular shaped label with all the edges curved. This is a token to the value of a penny. It was issued by Alfred Toogood who had an hotel in Sydney called The Rainbow Tavern. Many shop keepers and merchants in Australia in the 1850s issued tokens because of the shortage of British pennies. Tokens could only be used in the business premises of the person whose name was on the token. Warrnambool in the 1850s had two businesses issuing tokens, one was issued by William Bateman who had a general store in Banyan Street. The other was William Jamieson who had a hardware store in Liebig Street. Nineteenth century tokens today are highly collectable items.This token is of minor interest as an example of a New South Wales token penny.Circular copper coloured token. This glass is a souvenir of the 75th anniversary of the founding of Warrnambool Technical School. This school was established in Timor Street Warrnambool in 1913 and was relocated to Caramut Street Warrnambool in the 1970s. The Timor Street site now has the campus of South West TAFE (Technical and Further Education). Warrnambool Technical School in Caramut Road was re-named Brauer College in 1990 to reflect the change to a broad secondary curriculum embracing both technical and general educational subjects. The name also honours Dr Alfred Brauer, a well-known Warrnambool doctor with a strong involvement in local schools. Private Bertie Ernest Alfred Henderson served in the 5th Pioneer Battalion, 5th Division of the AIF. He died of wounds In France on 29/5/1918 or 1/6/1918. His burial place is Crouy British Cemetery, Crouy-sur-Somme. The framed 'In Memoriam' has been in the custody of family members until presented to W&DHS in 2013 by Mrs Beris Porter. Pte BEA Henderson, 1866, 3 Pioneer Battalion(2 Reinforcement Group) was a farmer and single. His father was Mr HH Henderson of Naringal. He enlisted on 27/5/1916 then sailed on the Themistocles on 28/7/1916 and transferred to the 5 Pioneer Battalion. Alfred Darby operated a soft drink factory in Henna Street Warrnamboolaround 1890 where Alderdice Brass Foundry now stands. He used the Maltese cross as a trademark. There was also an Alfred Darby operating a soft drink factory at Rochester in 1897/1898 which also had the same Maltese cross as a trade mark on his bottles. These two serving dishes or tureens have been made by the English firm of Myott, Son & Co. early in the 20th century (Art Nouveau design). Ashley Myott established the business in 1898 and later his brother joined the business. In 1976 the firm merged with the Alfred Meakin Company but today it is owned by the Churchill Pottery Group. The dishes have no known local provenance. These dishes are kept because they are attractive items in good order and examples of the type of dishes bought for use in the more affluent households early in the 20th century They will be useful for display purposes These are two identical china serving dishes with lids. The bases of the dishes are circular with the bowl section having twelve-sided edges and two handles with black patterns. The tops of the bowl have two black lines around the edges with two ornamental patterns in red, grey and black on the top edges. The lids also have twelve sided edges and have the same black lines, four of the coloured designs and handles with black patterning. This bag could be used for carrying sheet music or similar documents. The item was owned by Gethla Forsyth who graduated as a nurse from the Alfred Hospital Melbourne in 1936. Gethla served in the Australian Nursing Corps in WW2. Gethla was a sister to Gladys who was married to Dr Angus , a long serving doctor in Warrnambool. her family had earlier connections to the district in the 1900's in the Koroit area.A common object but an interesting social connection.Brown leather bag with metal catches and handle. Deakin University was established in 1974 as the fourth university in Victoria. It has a number of campuses around the state including Warrnambool where it merged with The Warrnambool Institute of Advanced Education in 1990. The university was named after Alfred Deakin, three times Prime Minister of Australia and leading figure in the process of Federation in Australia. Each year a number of students graduate from the Warrnambool Campus which is located on the Eastern edge of Warrnambool on the banks of the Hopkins River. In 2015, there were graduands from the faculties of Arts and Education, Business and Law, Science and health. Deakin University occupies an important educational position In Warrnambool and district. Margaret Jukes (nee McWilliams) married Alfred Meredith Jukes in Melbourne in 1853 and they moved to Warrnambool in 1856. She and Alfred had nine children one of whom died in infancy and four who died in young adulthood. Margaret was widowed in 1872, the year of the birth of their youngest child. A report of her funeral service in the Parish Record notes her "aged and much honored life". The hymns chosen "all were in quiet harmony with the remembrance of one whose daily life was an example and who held always a given trust in the over-ruling providence of God". It records the "peaceful closing of a well spent life".The Jukes name is associated with Jukes Street in East Warrnambool, and with the property named "Belvedere" in Ferguson Street, East Warrnambool. Professor Ernest Edgar Kurth of the University of Tasmania, invented a faster, simpler and cleaner way to produce charcoal on a continuous basis during the second world war. The charcoal was used to produce a combustible gas in motor cars, as a substitute for petrol, which was heavily rationed. The first batch of charcoal was produced in February 1942 and continued until the end of the war. Wood from stringybark trees was cut into lengths and fed into a kiln which converted it into charcoal. The Kiln is located on Beenak Road, 7km north of Gembrook. It has great historical significance, particularly as an alternative supplier of fuel during the second world war. It is a State Registered facility, managed by the Friends of Kirth Kiln and the park is managed by Parks Victoria Green soft covered book of 150 pages, with a photo of 2 men and a boy out in the bush with 3 fires burning.Contains a Prelude about Ernest Edgar Kurth written by Alfred Klink (2013) and a Foreward by John Sullivan (Heritage Officer of Parks Victoria). After all this he gets himself into some trouble refusing a duty and is charged and reduced to the ranks.
