This item was donated to Wodonga Historical Society by the artist, Betty L. Barberis. Betty Barberis nee Barton was one of 12 children born to Roderick Barton and Myrtle Ann Hore of Gundowring in the Kiewa Valley. She was born in 1927 and attended Upper Gundowring Primary School. Betty was encouraged to enter a project for the "Young Farmers" by illustrating a book. She won first prize for Victoria and the book was exhibited at the Royal Melbourne Show. This resulted in Betty attaining a Manual Art Teacher's Studentship which she completed at Wangaratta Technical School. Here she learned many new skills ranging from garment design to ceramics. She also attended Melbourne Teachers College. Betty created many decorative banners, the first being for the Australian section of the World Scout Jamboree in 1948. Over her long career she was to create many other banners and commissioned work including these badges for the Australian Antarctic Research Expedition in 1982. Betty’s great body of work included landscapes, millinery, ceramics, and a bronze sculpture of her husband Vern Barberis who was a fellow schoolteacher and represented Australia as a weightlifter, winning a bronze medal at the Helsinki Olympics in 1952. She also illustrated several books and had exhibitions in many galleries including in Albury. Dick Richards was a member of the Shackleton Trans Antarctic Expedition Ross Sea Shore Party. He later became Principal of the Ballarat School of Mines. The text for this book was typed by Ballarat School of Mines librarian Heather Durant, who remembered that at times it was difficult to read the writing due to whale blubber oil from the lamps on the paper. Heather was told that Dick Richards only started keeping the diary when ther became a chance the Ross Sea Shore Party may not survive. Heather remembered Dick Richards affectionately - he always carried a pipe and called her 'girlie'.Blue hard covered book of 14 pages. Silver Trophy, awarded to ‘A.W. Dakin, K.H.S., 440 Yards Race, 1902’. Arthur Dakin, a resident of Kew was a student at Kew High School and Trinity Grammar School. He served as an engineer on troopships in WW1. In 1918 he was part of the Ross Sea Rescue Expedition under the command of Captain John King Davis.The trophy is an important piece of realia as it was won by A.W. Dakin while a pupil of Kew High School. Arthur Dakin is best remembered as a member of the Ross Sea Rescue Mission. Other items relating to Dakin are held by the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery and exhibited in a permanent exhibition - 'Islands to Ice'.Small silver-plated stem cup won by Arthur Dakin in 1902 while a student at the private Kew High School (1872-1908). The small cup stands on a circular base surmounted by a stem, leading to a petal-like base to the upper cup. Above this, the inscription is surrounded by a laurel wreath.A.W. Frank Hurley was a photographer and member of Shackleton's Antarctic Expedition. Former Principal of the Ballarat School of Mines, Richard W. Richards, was a member of this expedition. Richard W. Richards was Principal of the Ballarat School of Mines, and was Physicist with the Shackleton Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition (1914-1917) . He was one of seven survivors of the Ross Sea Party who were stranded in Antarctical during Ernest Shackletyon's ill-fated 1914 expedition. xand Principal of the Ballarat School of Mines (1948-1958). Probably made and used by Dick Richards, who lectured in Physics at the Ballarat School of Mines, and later became the principal. Earlier Dick Richards had been a member of Shackleton's Antarctic Exploration Expedition. A 15cm diameter glass disc, 2.3 cm thick. ONe side is ground concave to 7'=5" (s s7 cm) radius. Victor GREENHALGH (1900-1983) Born Australia Victor Greenhalgh studied at at the Ballarat School of Mines, and was appointed to the staff in 1938. He was the commissioned sculptor for the King George V statue located in Ballarat's Sturt Street Gardens, as well as eight of the portrait busts of Australian Prime Ministers which line the "Avenue of Prime Ministers" in the Ballarat Botanical Gardens. From 1938 he taught at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT). The bust of Dick Richards was Victor Greenhalgh's last work, and was cast after the sculptors death. It was donated to the Ballarat School of Mines by Victor Greenhalgh's wife Violet Greenhalgh (Hambly). Dick Richards and Victor Greenhalgh were brothers-in-law. Dick Richards was a member of Shackleton's ill-fated Trans-Antarctic Expedition, and was awarded the Albert Medal for his heroic contribution as a member of the Ross Sea Shore party. In 1972 the Albert Medal was exchanged for the more widely recognised George Cross. Speaking at the unveiling of the sculpture in Dick Richards said that on his return fro the expedition in 1917 he had little inclination for a sedentary or a teaching career. By the time he retired in 1958 he was not at all sorry that he had spent his life as a teacher. Victor Greenhalgh died in Queensland in 1983. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. Dick Richards has been honoured through the naming of a Ballarat School of Mines prize - The R.W. Richards Medal. This medal later became a University of Ballarat prize. It has been awarded annually since 1959 to the Bachelor of Applied Science graduate considered to have achieved the most outstanding academic performance of their course. The award was was introduced to commemorate the long years of service to tertiary education in Ballarat by Mr Richards. Dick Richards joined the Ballarat School of Mines (SMB) in 1914, and soon afterwards was granted leave to join an expedition to Antarctica. The Hoadley Area in Scouting refers to a regional designation within Scouts Victoria, named in honour of Charles Hoadley, a pioneering Antarctic explorer and influential figure in Australian Scouting. While there isn’t a formal “Hoadley Area” in Sunshine today, the name is most prominently associated with the Hoadley Hide—a major Venturer Scout event. Dick Richards joined the Ballarat School of Mines in 1914, and soon afterwards was granted leave to join an expedition to Antartica. In 1915 he sailed from Australia with the Antarctic Exploration Expedition, led by Sir Ernest Shackleton. Prime Minister Bob Hawke wrote in 1984 'Your incredible journey of almost 2000 miles across the Antarctic Wastelands - involving some 9 months in the field with makeshift equipment - and you're adherence to duty in the face of enormous difficulty, suffering from scurvy, and the death of comrades, will; be an inspiration to your countrymen of the future as it is to us today." After returning to Australia Dick Richards resumed his work at SMB as Lecturer in Physics and Mathematics, and developed many pieces of experimental equipment. During World War Two he acted as a scientific adviser in the production of optical apparatus in Australia. Victorian Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (VIOSH) Australia is the Asia-Pacific centre for teaching and research in occupational health and safety (OHS) and is known as one of Australia's leaders on the field. VIOSH has a global reputation for its innovative approach within the field of OHS management. VIOSH had its first intake of students in 1979. At that time the Institution was known as the Ballarat College of Advanced Education. In 1990 it became known as Ballarat University College, then in 1994 as University of Ballarat. It was 2014 that it became Federation University. VIOSH Australia students are safety managers, senior advisors and experienced OHS professionals. They come from all over Australia and industry. Students are taught active research and enquiry; rather than textbook learning and a one-size fits all approach. VIOSH accepts people into the Graduate Diploma of Occupational Hazard Management who have no undergraduate degree - on the basis of extensive work experience and knowledge. A depiction of the MS Nella Dan an active primary vessel built in 1961 by the Aarlborg Shipyard PTY Ltd, and regularly chartered by the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions (ANARE) in the 20th C. The ship ran aground in December 1987 and unable to be salvaged, had to be scuttled in deep water off Macquarie Island. See link above, this record. The ship was named after Nel Law wife of the Director of the Antarctic Division, DR Phil Law. "Ib Odfeldt (b. 1944) is a self-taught painter and sculptor spending many years inspired by and interest in ships and marine art whilst working as an engineer in the Danish Merchant Navy. His paintings demonstrate a keen eye for technical accuracy and skill. The balance and setting of his works have attracted interest in many commissions by lovers of marine and shipping works. In 2002 Ib was awarded the Southern Ocean Maritime Art Prize and this acquisition of the Nella Dan is presented in the foyer of the Tasmanian Maritime Museum in Hobart." According to the artist, the painting was part of an exhibition he held at "Melbourne maritime museum " (Polly Woodside) to celebrate ANARE (ARTIC SHOW). He donated two paintings of the Nella Dan.
