These five photographs were most likely taken in the 1970s in Lithographic Squadron at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo. Photos .1P to .3P are annotated with the name of the technicians written on the back. Although Photo .4P is not annotated the technician is positively identified. In these five photos the technician is applying a UV-sensitive pigmented dye emulating one of the print colours to a white opaque polyester sheet mounted on a rotating table in a whirler. The coated sheet was dried before placement in a vacuum light frame beneath a stud registered map negative. They were then exposed to a carbon arc lamp. If there was more than one negative – typical for a type impression or 1st proof, the process was repeated for the other negatives of that print colour. There was a single exposure for composite negatives which was typical for the 2nd and final proof - the pre-press proof. The sheet was removed and washed with water and dried leaving the exposed colour impression. The technician repeated this process using process or spot dyes for remaining publication colours. Type impressions were a combination of the map grid and the topographic features in their correct print colours, forming a base for the cartographer to accurately position map names and symbols on a clear film overlay. The pre-press proof was a cost-effective way of producing a one-off visual copy of the map or chart product. It enabled cartographers to perform a quality inspection and correct any faults before publication. These flow diagrams and in particular the Introduction to Automap 2 booklet is designed to provide a general description of the second phase of the AUTOMAP system (Automap 2) installed at the Army Survey Regiment, Bendigo. It contains information that managers and supervisors need to know and serves as a preliminary introduction for anyone interested in learning about AUTOMAP 2. In order that RASVY can carry out its mapping programme effectively, an efficient production system is required that can acquire and edit digital data from a topographic data base and thence automatically produce high quality maps using that digital data. This is a set of nine photographs of cartographic typesetting equipment and personnel in Cartographic Squadron at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo circa 1968 to 1979. The rooms on the top floor of Fortuna Villa where the photos were taken were formally the nursery and boys bedrooms during the Lansell family’s occupation of the building. The Fotosetter type setting machine replaced the letterpress method of type production in 1956. Its operator entered the text using a type order provided by cartographic draughtsmen/ draughtswomen. The type was output on a film positive, which was contacted onto strip film. The text was cut out by cartographic draughtsmen/ draughtswomen and affixed onto type sheets using bees wax. Cartographic Squadron’s CPL Arty Lane specialised in the operation of the Fotosetter type setting machine for many years, as shown in photos .3P and .4P. The Editwriter capability supported all RASvy units and its contractor type setting requirements. SGT Jim McDonald operated the Editwriter for a couple of years in the late 1970’s. It was a large heavy steel framed light table with a scribing head that moved in a XY direction using a vernier calibrated measuring scale to 0.001 of an inch. Whilst hand operated it was much quicker and accurate than manual grid and graticule calculation, plotting and scribing. The history of co-ordinatorgraphs is covered in more detail with additional historic photographs, in pages 50 to 51 and page 88 of Valerie Lovejoy’s book 'Mapmakers of Fortuna – A history of the Army Survey Regiment’ ISBN: 0-646-42120-4. The scribing process as shown in photos .8P to .9P was the cartographic process of drafting features such as drainage, relief, vegetation, roads and culture on specially coated map reproduction material. The cartographic technician scribed out the map feature such as a contour to a specified line width on the map sheet, using a tool affixed with a sapphire tipped cutter. Images of the contents of a Photo Album presented to Capt GW Kenney by members of the ASR Officers Mess on leaving Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna in 1978 are particularly important as a snapshot set of many members of the Army Survey Regiment in 1978. These photos are particularly interesting as members are photographed in their workplaces. Unfortunately, not all workplaces have been represented, however a large number have been. The majority of individuals in these photographs who were serving at the Army Survey Regiment at the time have been named. The images have been converted into MPEG - 4 video file format that runs for 3.5 minutes and is stored on a memory stick. The 69 individual still images have been saved in compressed JPEG (.jpg) format and are also stored on the single 16Gb USB memory stick. 39156 Capt GW Kenney served in the Australian Army from 6 Jan 67 till 1 Aug 2000. He commenced his career within the RASvy Corps until 1978 and after completing his religious training went on to serve as an Army Chaplin for the remainder of his 30yr Army career. He officiated at many significant Survey Corps ceremonial and social occasions in his Chaplin capacity. Published in the Bendigonian 18th May 1916. J.H. McCOLL believed to be James Hiers McCOLL father of Lieut. Hugh McCOLL, C Coy 38th Battalion AIF. Pre war Hugh McColl spent 11 years in the junior and senior cadets and then 1 year as a Commissioned Officer in the local 67th Batt. He enlisted in the AIF with the rank of 2nd Lieut on 1.3.1916 aged 27 years 4 months. Embarked for England on 20.6.1916 and then France in November 1916. WIA on 12.10.1917 with concussion, hospital 7.4.1918 with sprained ankle, KIA by machine gun fire on 12.8.1918 during an advance near Proyart. This is a report prepared by the Director of the Royal Australian Survey Corps Brigadier L Fitzgerald OBE, FIS Aust for presentation at the Institution of Surveyors, Australia, 6th Survey Conference held in Adelaide in March 1962. This document mentions the beginning of mapping in 1907 in the Australian Intelligence Corps and how the Survey Corps was formed in 1915. The story continues until 1962.
