This set of 36 photographs was taken in August 1990 at a parade to welcome the Australian Army Chief of the General Staff (CGS)’s visit to the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo. Lieutenant General Henry John Coates AC MBE was a senior officer in the Australian Army who served as Chief of the General Staff from 1990 to 1992. The name of the CGS’s aide de camp officer is unknown. The CGS and the RSM-A visit to the Army Survey Regiment is covered on page 145 of Valerie Lovejoy’s book 'Mapmakers of Fortuna – A history of the Army Survey Regiment’ ISBN: 0-646-42120-4. This is a set of 15 photographs taken on a CO’s Parade held in December 1990 at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo. The Reviewing officer was the Commander of the 3rd Military District BRIG P. Davies AM ADC and the Parade Host was D-SVY COL Don Swiney MBE. The formalities performed at the parade were the presentation of a Warrant, presentation of the Defence Force Service Medal to two recipients, handover of the Regimental Sergeant-Major (RSM) appointment and promotions of four WO1’s to the rank of Captain. The four personnel commissioned as officers were CAPT Colin Cuskelly, CAPT Bill Griggs, CAPT Peter Warwick, and CAPT Neville Stone. Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna Villa, Bendigo circa 1984. As there are limited annotations with the photo set, the names of the aide de camp officer, guests and the media are unknown. The Australian Army’s MAJ GEN James Hughes AO DSO MC and the US Army’s GEN Keith are identified by their name tags. Given GEN Keith was a high ranking four-star General, it is likely they were attending a Five Nations Conference held at the Regiment. MAJ GEN James Hughes AO DSO MC held the position of Controller of Establishments from 1978 to 1984. The rehearsal was for the Freedom of Entry parade held 1-2 weeks later in 1985. The exact date for the Freedom of Entry parade is not known. The Freedom of Entry to the City of Bendigo was an honour first conferred by the Bendigo City Council to the Army Survey Regiment in 1970. The Freedom of Entry parade in 1985 was the fourth time the unit exercised its right of freedom of entry. The Regiment also exercised its Freedom of Entry with anniversary parades in 1977, 1980, 1992 and 1996. This set of 32 photographs were taken at the Corps Day Parade held at the Army Survey Regiment, Bendigo on the 28th of June 1990. The Parade Commander was CO LTCOL Rene van den Tol, and the Reviewing Officer was the Director of the Survey Corps - COL Don Swiney MBE. The Corps Day Parade was held on a wet and miserable day to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the formation of the Royal Australian Survey Corps. This occasion was one of several events held in 1990 to commemorate the 75th anniversary. The Freedom of Entry to the City on the 26th of October 1990 was an honour first conferred by the Bendigo City Council to the Army Survey Regiment in 1970. This was the fifth time the unit exercised its freedom of marching into the city with swords drawn, bayonets fixed and drums beating. The honour is usually bestowed upon local regiments, in recognition of their dedicated service, and it is common for military units to periodically exercise their freedom by arranging a parade through the city. The event began with a ceremonial parade at the Queen Elizabeth II Oval. The RAAF Central Command Band provided the music at the parade. After formal inspections of the troops, the Army Survey Regiment saluted as it marched past the Reviewing Officer - Mayor of Bendigo Councillor James Douglass, military dignitaries and guests. Led by the Regiment’s CO – LTCOL Rene van den Tol, the unit marched down View St, along Pall Mall and to Gaol Rd. Regiment members were treated to a civic reception at the City Hall after the ceremony. The Regiment also exercised its Freedom of Entry with anniversary parades in 1977, 1980, 1985, 1992 and 1996. This book belonged to Charles Rogers. Captain Charles Rogers was an Australian Army officer in the 4th Lighthorse Regiment. He was part of the mounted Guard of Honour during the visit of the Duke of Gloucester in 1934. The visit was part of Victoria’s centenary celebrations and the duke officially opened the Melbourne Shrine of Remembrance. Charles Rogers was well-known as a Warrnambool resident in the 1930s, 40s and 50s and was often seen on horseback leading parade and celebrations in the city. He as a long-serving Warrnambool Agricultural Show official as a judge of equine events. He died in 1961. This book is of interest, firstly as an example of a military handbook for cavalry officers and secondly because it belonged to Captain Charles Rogers, an army officer (Lighthorse regiment) who was a well-known resident of Warrnambool in the early to mid 20th century. This is a hard cover book of 198 pages. It has a yellow cover with black printing on the spine. Most of the pages are white, with several pink pages at the beginning and the end.
