This is a set of 30 photographs of contractors installing the Army Survey Regiment’s new Heidelberg Speedmaster 102 printing press in Lithographic Squadron’s purpose-built printing building at Fortuna, Bendigo in 1990. The computer-controlled five colour lithographic offset printing press provided the Royal Australian Survey Corps vastly improved printing capability, as the five colours for a standard topographic map was printed in a single pass. The print room was named Wayzgoose Hall after a medieval printing house festival. Wayzgoose Hall and the Speedmaster printing capability was commissioned by the Commander of the 3rd Military District BRIG P. Davies AM, ADC on Wednesday 27th June 1990. MAJ Ray Redman appears in his mess dress by the Roman fountain, serving a silver service morning tea to CPL Pat Drury, as a result of a losing bet on the 1991 Rugby League Grand Final. Pat Drury was a very keen rugby league supporter and followed Penrith, who lost its first Grand Final appearance to the Canberra Raiders in 1990. Penrith reversed the result the following year against Canberra winning their first premiership. This is a photograph of LTCOL Peter Constantine AM, who was the CO of the Army Survey Regiment from 1975 to 1976. He then assumed command of the School of Military Survey (SMS) from 1976 to his retirement in January 1982. LTCOL Constantine was one of RASvy’s most revered officers in this era, with 32 years of meritorious service as a leader on active duty in Vietnam in 1969 and the commanding officer of the Regiment and School. Orthophoto mapping provided the Survey Corps with the capability to produce map products quickly in the event of a crisis. These are four photographs of equipment used by the Army Survey Regiment to produce orthophotomaps. The OR1 orthophoto projector and workstation was introduced in the mid-1980s. It was the second-generation equipment used to orthorectify colour and monochrome film aerial photography, replacing the system introduced in 1973. Orthorectification is the process of removing geometric distortions and scale errors/variations from images. Images have tilt and relief distortions that make it difficult to compare accurately a map and an image of the same geographic area. Once an image is orthorectified, features on the image are shown in their planimetric locations. This is a set of ten photographs of Lithographic Squadron’s Printing Building at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo, c1986. The building was originally George Lansell’s gold crushing battery. When the Army took possession of Fortuna in 1942, it was modified with reinforced concrete floors to house the heavy-duty printing equipment. An additional building was purpose built on the eastern side of the printing building in 1987 to house a new computer-controlled Heidelberg Speedmaster five colour lithographic offset Printing Press. The one-hour visit was a rare opportunity for RA Svy to demonstrate to its Prime Minister the unit’s important role as Defence’s map production agency, its technical equipment, and its economic importance to Bendigo. It was also an opportunity to take him through historic Fortuna Villa. These photographs of a presentation to a charity organisation were taken in the grounds of Fortuna Villa, Army Survey Regiment in c1982. SPR Gae (Robinson) Amato was the unit’s first Miss Golden North entrant in the Miss Australia Quest. LTCOL Peter Eddy and SPR Amato presented a fundraising cheque to the unidentified representative from the Spastic Society. In later years SPR Amato took the opportunity of a new career as a commissioned officer in another Corps of the Australian Army.This is a set of four photographs of a presentation to a charity organisation at the Army Survey Regiment, Bendigo in c1982.
