The original photograph was taken by Nicholas John Caire. This is one of a series of postcards of photographs taken by socialite photographer Nicholas John Caire. N.J. Caire had a great love for the area and in the late 1800's took many photographs of Marysville and its surrounds. N.J. Caire was born in 1837 in Guernsey. He arrived in Adelaide about 1860 along with his parents who encouraged his early interest in photography. He opened a studio in Adelaide in 1867 after traveling extensively throughout the Gippsland taking photographs. After marrying in 1870 he moved to Talbot in Victoria until 1876 when he opened a studio in the Royal Arcade in Melbourne. After 1885 N.J. Caire gave up his city work and made his home in South Yarra and devoted the rest of his life to outdoor photography, specializing in the bush, the gullies and the mountains of south-eastern Victoria. I draw resource from ancient sculpture in particular Etruscan coffins and tomb wall painting. ...Jacqueline SLAYMAKER This work was undertaken in 1992 when Jacqueline Slaymaker was a 3rd Year student at Ballarat University College. The catalogue for the End of Year exhibition in 1992 states "The figures importance is purposeful. The strong sculptural form of the torso, tensions of the skin and volume are the aspects I focus on. Drawing is vital to my painting. The heavily layered works that I sand, scratch and rub back into eventually resolve some of the problems associated with painting. The Laughing Waters Artist in Residence Program was run by Nillumbik Shire Council (in partnership with Parks Victoria) 2001-2015. "This painting is a part of a series based on Rudolph Steiner form drawings. The lines are meant to be drawn in a single continuous and rhythmic movement. I have made the composition a bit more complicated by dividing up the painting into small blocks. The 'form drawing' is the organic looping shape that is a continuous organic line. It becomes meshed into small coloured blocks almost disguising the form." Melinda Harper was the first artist-resident at Boomerang House through this program. Formerly the house was the home and studio of Sue Ford and Gordon Ford. "My painting is about colour and form, and their relationship. I am interested in what one colour does to another colour, the weight of a colour and the feeling of a colour. The Art Collection features over 2000 works and was listed as a 'Ballarat Treasure' in 2007.Artists Statement: I am based in Northern NSW. My art practice is deeply influenced by my connections and experiences with the rivers and habitat where I live. Through drawing, paint, collage and digital media my work explores human relationships with riparian environments. Every day I see the undeniable beauty of our rivers as well as the ecological suffering of these riparian landscapes. Historical practices of land clearing, water politics and weed infestation put tremendous pressure on the Australian ecology. Disrupting traditional art forms, I combine them with new technologies to reveal some of the complexities behind human relationships with nature. With bold collagist experimentation, I combine numerous mediums to expose the small revelations between media. These juxtapositions open up the possibilities of reinventing different ways of being with the natural environment. Like the layers in my work, the issues surrounding our riverine environments are multifaceted and complex and begin with individual choices. I want to direct people’s attention to our rivers, to love, appreciate and reconnect with the natural environment. See Under Steam - Part II The Navy (Cat No 2700.02) NOTES FROM A SAILORS LOG - UNDER CANVAS - PART I THE MERCHANT SERVICE Document James CONDER Journal James Brycanne Conder Roma's Secretarial ...James Bryance CONDER (aka James Brycanne CONDER) Artist, poet and four-navy veteran, 1872 - 1954. In 1889 he served in the Merchant Marine Service sailing on the ships ‘Ellora’ and ‘Avenger’. in 1891, aged 19, he joined the Royal Navy in Australia serving on the flagship of the Australian Station, ‘HMS Orlando’, when it escorted ships of the new Australasian Auxiliary Squadron in coastal voyages. After serving 6 months he returned to family in Melbourne rather than sign on for 12 years. Instead he joined the Victorian Colonial Navy and was posted, in succession, to the ‘HMVS Cerberus’, ‘HMVS Nelson’ and the gunboat ‘HMVS Albert’. In 1896 he left the navy, married Victoria Agnes NIHILL and joined the Victorian Police Force. In 1904 CONDOR returned to the sea as part of the Commonwealth Naval Forces, an amalgamation of the colonial navies formed after federation and later becoming the Royal Australian Navy. On his first ship, ‘HMS Katoomba’, as bosun yeoman, he helped train new recruits. He later served on ‘HMS Challenger’ and ‘HMS Psyche’ which included voyages to Fiji, the New Hebrides, Singapore and New Zealand as well as regular cruises to Australian ports. In 1909, CONDER left the Navy and undertook shored-based civilian work until 1913 when he joined the Royal Australian Naval College at Osborne House in Geelong. He remained with the Naval College until 1937 through its moves to Jervis Bay, NSW and then to Crib Point, Victoria training midshipmen according to the practices of the Royal Navy. In later life, CONDER produced two handwritten journals for his family illustrated with his own paintings and drawings. Two original sets were made. One remains in the family while the other is held by the Australian National Maritime Museum in Sydney. PMHPS hold several items relating to James CONDER including photocopies of his journals ‘Notes from a Sailors Log - Under Canvas - Part I The Merchant Service’ (Cat No 2700.01) and ‘Notes from a Sailors Log - Under Steam - Part II The Navy’ (Cat No 2700.02), a photocopy of his Certificate of Service (Cat No 2700.03), a booklet of his life story (Cat No 2700.04) and several digital items (Cat No 2476.01 - 2476.09).A spiral bound photocopy of a sailor's log; dark red marbled covers; front cover has tan inset with title in and around a sketch of a lifebuoy. In 2016 Josh Muir's work 'Still Here', projected onto the front wall of the National Gallery of Victoria was critically acclaimed. At that time he stated: "‘I am a proud Yorta Yorta/ Gunditjmara man, born and living in Ballarat, Victoria.
