Instituted in 1914, the Military Cross (MC) was issued for gallantry in presence of the enemy to warrant and junior officers of the Army who were ineligible (on account of their rank) for the Distinguished Service Order. During the First World War, it was also available to equivalent ranks in the Royal Naval Division and Royal Marines and it later became available to equivalent ranks in the RAF for acts of gallantry on land. The equivalent award for the other ranks for gallantry on land in presence of the enemy was the Military Medal (MM) which had been instituted in 1916 and, similarly to the MC, later became available to RAF other ranks serving on the ground. This medal was awared to Pte H. S Holgate for bravery in the field in 1917. Pte Holgate was killed in action at Zonnebeke 11 October 1917. Historical and social significance for schoolSilver medal with a swivelling suspension. features King George the V, uncrowned, in Field Marshal's uniform on the obverse. The medal reverse depicts the crowned royal cypher over the words "FOR BRAVERY IN THE FIELD" all within a laurel wreath. Impressed around edge are the recipient's details. The ribbon has a central stripe of thin red and white lines flanked by equally sized stripes of navy. Inscribed around obverse: 'GEORGIVS V BRITT: O[M]N: REX ET IND: IMP:' Inscribed in centre of reverse below royal insignia : 'FOR/BRAVERY/IN THE/FIELD' Impressed around OUTER edge of medal: '4303 PTE H. Australian Imperial Navy Christmas Card, 1917. Embossed cream colored card with Army/Navy emblem in gold, below are the Union Jack and Australian Red Ensign flags, below the flags is a gold cannon. Inscription inside is on paper which is on paper held in place with twisted heavy cotton, grey or may have been blue, and has been twisted for effects and a 6cm length of wool tied in the bow on the left side of card. Made from wool sold atThe Geelong Wool Exchange which had just returned to the National Wool Centre (currently the home of the National Wool Museum, formely Dennys Lascells) on Tuesday 13th of October 1987. Lempriere (Aust.) Pty. Ltd. was the buyer of the first bale of wool who also previously brought the first bale of wool at the first wool auctions in Geelong in 1858. The wool was turned into fabric by CSRIO and Foster Valley.Black cardboard backing with Navy Blue cloth sample glued ontop. Wool sample is stapled to the Navy cloth and black cardboard. An empty small blue, and gold cardboard Capstan Medium Strength Cigarette packet with white lettering, which contained 10 Fine Virginia Leaf Medium Cork cigarettes. There is a white nautical capstan symbol in an oval shape at the bottom right on the front with Fine Virginia Leaf written below in gold lettering. One side of the packet has written, Virginia Cigarettes and the other has Trade mark (with an eight pointed star) Mark W.D. & H.O. Wills (Aust.) Ltd. Sydney and a 3/4 number in a circle on the right. It opens at the top with a cardboard flap. Inside is a brown cardboard flapped tray with the inscription Every Genuine 'Capstan" Navy Cut Cigarette bears the name W.D. & H.O Wills printed on the two smaller flaps. POST WWII: As a member of the British Armed Forces he applied to stay in Australia – the National Archives holds his application form. MARRIAGE: He married Isabel Noel Fulton in 1949, in Vic. AUST. MIL. FORCES: He joined the Aust. Army and served from 1953 to 1977. His number then was 35175 in the Royal Aust. Engineers. His last rank was Sergeant. Returned Service League: He spent some time as a member of the Castlemaine Sub Branch. DEATH: He died 28 JUN 2005. His remains are in the Garden of Remembrance, Springvale, VIC.
