... biography or a piece of creative literature; rather, it is a utilitarian, factual reference work. However, it holds high historical significance as a snapshot of Victorian political and social hierarchy, showing exactly who held power and influence in the British Empire in 1854. Authentic artifacts, documents, or personal library books signed by the founders of Melbourne are scarce and deeply sought after by Australian universities, state libraries, museums, and private collectors of colonial history ...This volume is a genealogical and biographical reference directory of the British nobility. It was designed as a compact, portable handbook detailing the titles, lineages, coats of arms, and family histories of the peers of Great Britain and Ireland, as well as bishops and baronets.
