The Australian Red Ensign is a variant flag of Australia. This flag was probably used for a patriotic purpose in Ballarat, such as the end of World War One. The Red Ensign was the only flag private citizens could fly on land. By traditional British understanding, the Blue Ensign was reserved for Commonwealth Government use, with State and local governments, private organisations and individuals all using the Red Ensign.(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Australia) There was some confusion over appropriate use of the ensigns until the Flags Act 1953 set the Blue Ensign as the national flag, and the Red Ensign as the flag of the Australian mercantile marine. Red ensigns continued to be used in Anzac Day marches into the 1960s.(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Australia) Small red paper Australian flag attached to a stick. The Australian flag symbolises the nation’s origins, identity, and political structure. Its three core elements, the Union Jack, the Commonwealth Star, and the Southern Cross represent a different layer of Australia’s history and national story. The Union Jack - Located in the canton (top-left corner), the position of honour. - Acknowledges the history of British settlement and the institutions inherited from Britain, the parliamentary democracy, rule of law, and civic rights. The Commonwealth Star - Large seven‑pointed star beneath the Union Jack. - Six points, the six points represent the states, the seventh point represents all territories. - Represents federation and the unity of Australia as a Commonwealth. The Southern Cross - Five stars on the fly side of the flag. - A constellation visible only in the Southern Hemisphere, long used for navigation by explorers and sailors. - Holds deep significance in First Nations astronomy, with many cultural stories attached to it. - Symbolises Australia’s geographical location and its identity as a southern nation. The Australian flag was first flown in 1901 after a public design competition with over 32,000 entries. It was officially adopted in 1903 and modified in 1908 to add the seventh point to the Commonwealth Star. It became the official national flag in 1954 under the Flags Act, reflecting Australia’s growing independence from Britain.Australian Flag. Rob Upson became a volunteer at the Bendigo Visitor Centre in 1998. The Staff produced a monthly newsletter called ‘The Grapevine’. Being reasonably new to Bendigo, Rob became interested in its history and began writing articles to share with the volunteers. He called them ‘Grapevine Cuttings’ under the pen name of ‘Merlot’. Rob wrote about 90 articles over a period of 12 years until ‘The Grapevine’ was finally pruned and shutdown.
