Mentioned is the visit by the Australian High Commissioner Mr Michael L'Estrange to Trevessa Farm, Cornwall, the birthplace of Sir John Quick. The Cornish Association placed a plaque on Trevessa Farm in 2002. Margaret Bigg, one of the owners of Trevessa Farm can claim to have relatives of the Ellis Family here in Bendigo. On the back is a copy of a Bendigo Advertiser article titled Cornish to honour their patron saint. It was dated March 4, 1992. Article contains some information on St Piran, the patron saint of miners. Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna Villa, Bendigo circa 1984. As there are limited annotations with the photo set, the names of the aide de camp officer, guests and the media are unknown. The Australian Army’s MAJ GEN James Hughes AO DSO MC and the US Army’s GEN Keith are identified by their name tags. Given GEN Keith was a high ranking four-star General, it is likely they were attending a Five Nations Conference held at the Regiment. MAJ GEN James Hughes AO DSO MC held the position of Controller of Establishments from 1978 to 1984. The generals were accompanied by their wives and travelled by RAAF Iroquois helicopter.This is a set of 24 photographs taken on the occasion of Australian Army Major General Hughes and US General Keith visit to the Army Survey Regiment, Bendigo circa 1984. The booklet was produced to record the names of the early white settlers to the colony of Victoria who presented a loyal address to the visiting Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh in 1867. Prince Alfred was the second son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert and joined the Royal Navy where he served for many years. He married Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna of Russia. The Fred Rochow Railways Collection incorporates photos related to the operation of the Wodonga Railway Station including different types of trains and railways staff C. 1930 – 1990. It was donated to the Wodonga Historical Society by Fred Rochow, a railwayman who spent many years based in Wodonga. He joined the Victorian Railways on 17th June l947 and retired in 1988. For some time, he was a member of the Australian Federated Union of Locomotive Enginemen and served a term as a member of the Trades Hall Council. He had an extensive knowledge of the struggles that took place to achieve better conditions for railway workers. Fred worked for many years as a fireman and then worked his way up the ranks to driver, experiencing many changes from the days of steam locomotives through to diesel trains, locomotives and even the modern XPT train. He worked throughout Victoria at different stages of his career, with his final working years focused on the northeast of Victoria and the Albury to Melbourne line. After his retirement, Fred continued to share his love of steam miniature trains with the community. The Flying Scotsman Pacific 4-6-2, perhaps one of the most iconic steam locomotives in the world, visited Australia in 1988-89 for a series of events associated with the country’s bicentennial celebrations. As part of the celebrations locomotives began to arrive in Melbourne for the exhibition from 14 October. A planned parallel run south of Seymour with NSW locomotives 3112 and 1210 and Victorian Railways J515 had to be abandoned due to late running by the NSW locomotives. A parallel run did take place on Sunday 16 October when VR R761 and NSW 3801 ran from Wodonga to Melbourne. On 25 October, the Flying Scotsman worked its first passenger trip in Australia when it took a return Melbourne to Albury service.This collection has local and statewide significance as it captures images of trains, locomotives and personnel who operated the railway services in Wodonga and throughout Northeast Victoria. The railways played a critical role in opening up Victoria and connecting Australia for trade, business, social communication and transport.Jimmy Taylor standing beside the Flying Scotsman.
