The former Bald Hills Hotel was situated on the old Calder Highway at Diggers Rest between Mitchells Lane and present day Gap Road. It was one of many hotels built to provide a service for the passing gold fields traffic during the 1850s. During its existence, the Millett family owned the establishment.The site of the former hotel has significance for the 1850s gold rush period in Victoria and the development of Diggers Rest.A non-digital black and white photograph of a two storey hotel with a verandah across the front and a picket fence on either side of the building. Tom NESTOR Tom Nestor studied a Diploma of Fine Art at Ballarat College of Advanced Education (later Federation University) in 1980, 1981 and 1982 with the intending to be a secondary teacher. Instead, he opened his own ceramics studio in Bald Hills at his parents property near Creswick. He worked for potteries in Albury and Healesville as well as Old Ballarat Pottery as a production thrower. In 1985 he moved to Belgrave where he continued to work producing kitchenware and garden pots till mid 1986. Schlossberg Vineyard was situated along Vineyard Road in Sunbury, between Winilba and the Calder Highway. It was established by Felix Frederick Bubeck, who arrived in Australia from Rotenberg (near Stuggart) in the 1860. In 1866 he acquired 60 acres of land on Bald Hill and established the vineyard. In 1880, claret produced on the property received an honourable mention when it was exhibited in Bordeaux, France,From the mid 1850s a number of vineyards were established on the hillsides overlooking Vineyard Road. The east facing outlook that captured the morning sun was ideal for growing grapevines. Frank Millet and his cousin, Hopper Cahill are standing in front of the Aitkins Gap Gaol after spending the day shooting rabbits in 1922. In the 1860s the gaol and stables were sold to George Millett and added to the Millett property. The barracks and a new farm homestead were built by Mick Morrison. The Bald Hill Hotel at Aitkens Gap on the Bendigo Road (Calder Highway) was built by George Millett in 1854 and functioned until the gold began to run out after the 1850s Victorian Goldrush. Emma Thomas Collection: Items were owned by Emma Courtis, nee Thomas (1854-3/3/1937. Family lived in Hamelin St, White Hills. Clothing items possibly made by Emma or a local person in White Hills area and used around 1890s. Emma's family include Elizabeth Penrose (mother), Solomon Thomas (father), and Richard Courtis, a blacksmith (her husband). Richard Courtis married Emma Thomas in 1875 and they moved to Melbourne in 1922.Three digital photographs relating to Emma Thomas. a. Emma in her later years but no date recorded. b. The wedding photo is of Emma and Richard's daughter, Ada, who married Hedley Thomas. Donor's grandfather, Richard, is seventh in the third row from the left. Edward Kellett was born in Chorley, Lancashire, England, son of John Kellett and unknown mother. It is not known when he arrived in Melbourne but he married Selina Wells in 1852 at St Peters, Eastern Hill. She was born in c1827 in Aston Clinton, Buckinghamshire, daughter of William Wells and Elizabeth Allan. Her family arrived from Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire on the 'Osprey' on 22 March 1849. Edward and Selina had 8 children - 5 girls and 3 boys; 3 died in infancy. All were born in Collingwood before the family came to Surrey Hills. Edward and Selina were the first owners of ‘Yielima’ at 32 Erasmus Street, Surrey Hills, built c1887. It was known by this name until c1922. Edward pre-deceased his wife. Edward's funeral notice in The Argus of 11 July 1893 states that he was a corn merchant of Exhibition Street. His property was sworn at 1512 pounds, 1232 in realty and 280 pounds personally. He was buried in Melbourne General Cemetery (CofE Compartment K, No 306). Selina is listed in Erasmus Street in the 1903, 1905 and 1908 electoral rolls as a boarding house keeper. She died at Surrey Hills on 22/10/1911. In her will she left realty valued at 900 pounds and personally at 220 pounds. She was buried with her husband. 'Yielima' was sold on 19 February 1919 with a sale of contents on 18 March 1919. The portrait is by an unknown artist. It was passed down through the family of his eldest son Edward Allan Kellett and then his daughter Ethel Emily Kellett. A digital copy of a portrait of Edward Kellett dressed in a dark suit with tie secured by a tie pin. It overlooks the township of Bacchus Marsh and is one of the highest points in the township area. The reserve is undergoing ongoing planning and development for a range of recreational uses. As part of this planning a cultural heritage assessment was undertaken in 2019. This included assessment of the area for Aboriginal heritage.
