Percival Sylvester LANYON NR V 14661 enlisted 21 May 1941 Aged 45, Discharged 5 June 1944 Rank PTE. UNit 3 Garrison Bde. Heavy copper medallion and chain. At the top of the chain is a solid rod, 5 rings in the chain. Medallion is gold colour, top has the Rising Sun Badge covered with a saluting soldier. Two rifles go from his waist to the ground. A blue enamel across the medallion. Centre has a small shield with a concave recess in its centre. A wreath up from the bottom on both sides, bottom has a boomerang.Front. “DUTY. BRAVELY. DONE. P.S. This souvenir was organised by H.M. Leggo & Co. and presented to the citizens of Bendigo to honour men from the factory who enlisted. It also pays tribute to Prime Minister William Morris Hughes (The Little Digger). The photograph on the back features the first group of volunteers to enlist in WW1 from H M Leggo & Co. Over 4000 Bendigo residents enlisted to serve in W.W. 1. Much is known about their contributions to the war effort, but less is known about the contributions made by the medical staff who provided care at the front lines or otherwise supported care. People enlisted for many reasons - patriotism, duty and adventure being just a few. Over 416,000 persons enlisted to serve in World War One out of a population of 5 million. The Australian Government recorded 215,585 casualties during the war. Over 80% of those casualties occurred on the Western Front, in Belgium and France. The weapons used in trench warfare created horrendous injuries for both sides in the war. In the Australian Imperial Force (AIF), for example, most wounds were the result of flying metal. During their service, many of the 331,781 AIF troops and medical staff were injured more than once: over 50% were hit by shell fragments or shrapnel bullets from artillery fire 40% were hit by high-velocity bullets from rifles or machine guns 12% were affected by chlorine or mustard gas 2% were hit by bombs or grenades only 0.3% suffered bayonet wounds Many health risks also developed into large-scale problems on the front. Those who served lived and work in crowded spaces, which helped to spread bacterial, viral and parasitic infections. Unhealthy living conditions for soldiers (and sailors) included: poor diet lack of sleep exposure to cold contact with mice, rats, fleas, lice and other parasites. The 38 Bn AIF was raised in Bendigo 1916. After WW1 the local C.M.F. ZUnit became the 38 Bn Northern Victorian Regiment. It was shut down in 1962.1. In 1915 Arthur Swanwick from Bendigo enlisted in the AIF. He left for overseas service in March 1916. He wrote a message to his sweetheart Jessie Campbell, placed it in a bottle and threw it overboard from HMAT A18 "Wiltshire". The bottle was found on a beach near Robe SA and the message was sent to Jessie. Arthur returned home and he and Jessie married in 1918. Arthur died on 11 April 1968. Arthur's niece sent the updated information after the story was shared with the family who knew nothing about it. A hand written letter on lined green paper sent to BHS providing an update on the story of a "Message in a Bottle" written by Arthur Swanwick to Jessie Campbell. Lydia Chancellor (1889-Dec 1979) Her parents were George Pethard and Miriam Peatling. George founded Tarax soft drinks in Numurkah in 1898 before moving to Bendigo in 1902 and establishing a brewing factory there. He also built the home "Taraxville" in Panton St. The factory ceased operation in Bendigo during WW1. After the war, the firm was re-established by George jnr, brewing in Melbourne. Lydia married Norman George Chancellor in 1924 but he died 2 yrs later. Lydia returned to Bendigo to care for her mother and began an extensive collection of Toby jugs. She donated 100 jugs to the Bendigo Art Gallery in 1973. This mobility aid was housed under the old stage area of the Soldiers Memorial Institute building in Pall Mall Bendigo. When the renovations to the building began in late 2016 the Aid was removed and restored by the Bendigo District RSL Men in Sheds program and is now on display in the same building now called Bendigo Military Museum. The Soldiers Memorial was the HQ of the Bendigo RSL Sub Branch. It is not known the origin of the Aid but it was most likely used by disabled Bendigo RSL members post WW1.Three wheeled Mobility Aid. Front wheel is 41cm dia pneumatic, 32mm wide, rear wheel 68cm dia, width 52mm wide. The right wheel axle has a sprocket & chain assembly, the left is free wheeling, both have mud guards. Frame is tubular steel painted reddish colour, the seat and back rest are brown leather, seat sides are timber, there are two timber platforms in front, the top one is adjustable the bottom one is fixed. The chair is steered via a long metal handle fixed to the wheel frame. These 2 cupboards are in what was the “Writing Room” of the Soldiers Memorial Institute Pall Mall Bendigo where the Bendigo RSL held occupancy from the day the building was opened in 1921. The room is now known as the “Building and RSL History Room”, of the Bendigo Military Museum. The four Units on the 2 cupboards had large Associations in Bendigo. The 57th Bn basically had one Whole Company of Soldiers from the Bendigo region during WW1. The POW’s which were mostly from WW2 and held many great reunions in the Main Hall. The 38th Bn was raised in Bendigo in 1916 for the 1st World War, after the war it became a CMF unit up into the 1960’s. The 6th Bn was one of the first Victorian Bn’s to be raised for WW1. Due to several name changes to the Bendigo RSL Museum it will be just referred to as the Museum. These Scrap books hold articles from local Bendigo newspapers, Melbourne newspapers, other publications including Mufti magazine, Victorian Collections, Australian War Memorial to name a few. General photographs of Museum Volunteers and their involvement, Renovations to the SMI Building, Funeral notice's and programs of past Museum Volunteers, exhibitions involved in to also name a few. The biggest collection of one item relates to the Grinton photographs. .1) Vol 1. The first article and also the first since the Museum opened in Feb 1998. Dated April 28th 1998 in the Local "Weekender" on page 2 with a full page, two articles and photographs. The final article was in the Bendigo Advertiser dated Aug 22nd 2009 regarding the mass graves at Fromelles and for families to come forward for DNA testing to identify remains. The photo included was T.W. Francis which the Museum holds. he was later identified as one of the Soldiers. (Refer Cat No 8015P) .2) Vol 2. The first two pages Sep 2009 relate to the Shrine of Remembrance Box - Outreach program and it's visit to Bendigo and other areas. This was part of their Education program which the Museum became involved in. The last item April 2013 relates to the search for the Military Gun War trophies allotted to Bendigo after WW1. .3) Vol 3. The first two pages are June 2013 "Mufti magazine" and items that the Museum put in their publication. "Mufti" is the newsletter of the Victorian State Branch of the RSL. The last item Nov 15th 2022 tells of the Post 75 Central Victorian Veterans Banner being donated to the Museum. The Association changed their name. (Refer Cat No 7420) .4) Vol 4. JOHM ADAMS was President of the Bendigo RSL from 1917 - 1921. He was one of the movers and mainstays in the formation of the Bendigo Sub Branch. It was also stated that his determination had carried into effect the plans for the "Soldiers Memorial Institute" Pall Mall Bendigo. John Adams had extensive service pre WW1 with Bendigo Volunteer Rifles,4th Militia BN, Victorian Cavalry,5th Militia and the 67th Bn. Appointed Lieutenant 25.11.1900, Capt 1.7.1907, Major 16.4.1913. He applied for a Commission in the AIF on 26.11.1914 and embarked on 22.12.1914 with the 14th BN for Gallipoli Campaign, WIA 3.5.1915, apon return to duty he took command of the 14th Bn for a period until invalided to England with chest and cardiac problems. He returned to Aust in Feb 1916 and his appointment was terminated on 22.4.1916. Post War with a change in retirement age he was invited to recommence service with the temporary rank of Lt Col to Command the 38th Bn when it returned to Aust in 1919. This is a set of six photographs of Army Survey Regiment personnel who volunteered as extras in the ANZACS TV Series filmed in 1985. Many of the extras playing the roles of Australian soldiers were serving members of the Army Survey Regiment, Bendigo and the Armoured Regiment, Puckapunyal. This was done to keep costs down so that actors did not have to learn how to act as soldiers or to have to teach them how to use the weapons. Army Svy Regt’s 28 personnel left Bendigo in the early hours of the morning arriving at Phillip Island’s Cowes Motor Inn. Wardrobe staff make-up artists dressed the soldiers from both units in authentic WW1 uniforms in readiness for filming at Woolamai Surf Beach, on the other side of Phillip Island. Filming for the day involved a battle scene simulation of the beach landings at Gallipoli, Turkey. A long day of filming ensued, with 8 arduous re-takes of charges from the beach to the steep cliffs, and the scrubland beyond the cliffs before the producers were satisfied with the footage. The producers provided ample refreshments back at Cowes Motor Inn at the end of the day, before Army Svy Regt’s 28 personnel departed on the 4-hr trip back to Bendigo.
