Alice Bertha Schwerkolt was the second daughter of Louis and Francesca (nee Both) and the granddaughter of August Johann and Paulina Schwerkolt. In 1913 she married William Tanner.|The donor Rosemary Tanner had married Edgar William Tanner and is the daughter-in-law of Alice Bertha. It has long sleeves with a pigeon point front and a 'hobbled' band of lace around the skirt at knee height. This evening outfit was made and worn by Bertha Frances Dudfield (nee Bruere, 1892-1982). Bertha was born in Christchurch, New Zealand in 1892, one of twelve surviving children. Her family migrated to Australia, living first in St Kilda before building the house 'Avon' at 42 Bay Street, Brighton, where Bertha lived with her husband Ambrose Reginald Dudfield until 1975.Evening outfit comprising magenta feathered cape, full-length black velvet dress and a spray of silk flowers. The pet dog is an Australian terrier. Bertha was the wife of noted colonial silversmith and jeweller, Ernest Leviny. Together, they raised a family of ten children in their home Buda, Castlemaine. The five unmarried daughters pursued their interests in various creative pastimes linked with the Arts and Crafts Movement of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.One of the few photographs of Bertha Leviny and her daughters taken together after the death of Bertha's husband, Ernest, a prominent Australian silversmith. The Leviny daughters were artistic in their own right, following the principles of the Arts and Crafts Movement. This cot cover insert was made during the 1929 depression an a time of financial hardship. It was made by Jean Hepner's Grandmother from used woollen garments. They were hand stitched on to an old woollen blanket. The quilt was used by at least five of the seven children born in to this family and also by grandchildren in later years.
