RHS of front opening edged with 3 cm floral lace that continues around neckline to crossover point. Blouse is yoked front and back with floral lace inserts and vertical pin tucks. Below the yoke is a horizontal band of ribbon insert lace (3cm). Lower sections of the blouse are gathered into the lace insert. The front sections have vertical strips of inserted lace alternating with vertical pin tucks. The front opening is fastened with five press-studs covered by a placket. Long sleeves are gathered into the arm holes and gathered at the wrist into two bands of lace - one floral and one ribbon insert lace. Sarah Wright was married to a gold miner named William. They lived at Laura Villa, Smeaton. Their family won many singing and instrumental awards. Frank Wright their son was born and attended Smeaton State School and was a renown resident of Smeaton. Frank was tutored by Percy Code and was awarded a gold medal for the highest marks in the ALCM examinations in the British Colonies at the age of seventeen years. He became the Australian Open Cornet Champion by the age of eighteen. A year later, Frank conducted the City of Ballarat Band, and later the Ballarat Soldiers’ Memorial Band. He formed the Frank Wright Frisco Band and Frank Wright and his Coliseum Orchestra. These bands won many South Street awards, and Frank as conductor won many awards in the Australian Band Championship contest. In 1933 Frank Wright sailed to England to conduct the famous St Hilda’s Band and was later appointed Musical Director of the London County Council, where he organized many amazing concerts in parks, in and around the London district. He was made Professor of Brass and Military Band Scoring and conducted at the Guildhall of Music and Drama. Frank was often invited to adjudicate Brass Band Championships around Europe, in Australia, including South Street and in New Zealand. The delicate needlework flowers on the net insert on front of blouse and the over sleeves exhibit a high standard of skill. This child's cotton blouse was handmade by 15-year-old schoolgirl, Phoebe Lewell in 1918. She won the Form V Needlework Prize at the Speech Day for St Michael's, St Kilda in that year. This blouse was purchased in the late 1990s by the donor who later moved to Emerald but, at the time, had a 2nd hand decoration shop in Camberwell when she purchased this as part of a group of garments which included bloomers, lace collars and cuffs, camisoles etc - all of which have been donated to the Museum.
