The history of metal packaging began in Bohemia in the 1200s. Metal has been produced for a very long time. But the first metal used for packaging was tin. In particular, it was the process of tin plating that was invented in Bohemia. Before this no other metal was economically able to be used for packaging. Later, in 1667 Andrew Yarranton, and English engineer, and Ambrose Crowley brought the method to England. Here it was improved by ironmasters including Philip Foley. Then by 1697, John Hanbury had a rolling mill at Pontypool in South Wales. The method they developed involved rolling iron plates using cylinders. This process enabled more uniform blank plates to be produced than was possible by just hammering the tin.The use of tin to protect and store food and other items, revolutionised the world.Container metal cylindrical plain tin with separate lid. In 1791 Prague organized the first World's Fair, Bohemia (modern-day Czech Republic). The first industrial exhibition was on the occasion of the coronation of Leopold II as a king of Bohemia, which took place in Clementinum, and celebrated the considerable sophistication of manufacturing methods in the Czech lands during that time period. The French tradition of national exhibitions culminated with the French Industrial Exposition of 1844 held in Paris. This fair was followed by other national exhibitions in Europe. In 1851, under the title "Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations", the World Expo was held in The Crystal Palace in Hyde Park, London, the United Kingdom. The Great Exhibition, as it is often called, was an idea of Prince Albert, Queen Victoria's husband, and is usually considered to be the first international exhibition of manufactured products. It influenced the development of several aspects of society, including art-and-design education, international trade and relations, and tourism. This expo was the precedent for the many international exhibitions, later called World Expos, that have continued to be held to the present time. (source; Wikipedia) Commemorative medal. Copy of an article from the Bendigo Weekly 9/6/2000 titled The Mine Flooding Crisis - New Pumping Technology Suggested by James Lerk. Louis August Samuels was born in Germany. Samuels was involved in the mining industry in Australia and he had mining experience in West Africa. He had knowledge of the mines at the southern end of the field. He was president of the Mine Managers' Association. He believed the flooding was caused by the lack of baling and pumping operations. Earlier he had visited a coal mine in Bohemia to see a Riedler pump at work. It was a new design, very effective, simple in design and reliable. He watched it work. It was 500 metres underground and pushed the water to the surface in a single column. He suggested this type of pump could be adapted to use on the New Chum Reef. Even this suggestion was not the latest technical innovation, but it would be more efficient and less costly than baling. No one took him seriously and continued to remove water by the traditional means. Article is accompanied by a photo of Samuels.bendigo, history, long gully history group, the long gully history group - the mine flooding crisis - new pumping technology suggested, bendigo weekly 9/6/2000, james lerk, louis august samuels, origin of the bendigo saddle reefs and the cause of their golden wealth 1893, bendigo mine managers' association, victoria proprietary company, victoria quartz mine, new chum drainage association, riedler pump, riedler zwangschluss valve, technical school at aix-la-chapelle (achen)

The collection of thirteen model horse drawn vehicles were carefully handmade by Mr Chas W Davis 1925 - 2002. He was a talented artist and saw doctor. This model of a two horse drawn enclosed Hansom Cabriolet replicates the vehicle that enjoyed respect from the public from c.1833 until 1935. A model of a black enclosed coach which is a four wheeled passenger horse drawn vehicle where the driver sits at the front behind the two white horses. It has two large and two smaller gold painted spoked wheels with black rims and gold mudguards on the rear wheels, two gold painted coach lamps, red vinyl padded seating and four open windows with rolled up blinds. There are two doors with a step for easy access into the coach. A long brown wooden shaft separates the horses as well as the necessary horse tack for carriage use to help the driver communicate with the horses. A hand operated brake pad is on the rear wheels. The first Hansom Cabs were clumsy, dangerous awkward vehicles. The drivers were suspected of 'Rude Bohemia'. It took the refinement of Joseph Aloysius Hansom himself to clear airs and remodel the cab to a safe vehicle. It enjoyed respect from c.1833 until 1935. It came in four types.replicas, models, scale models, vehicles, carriages, horse drawn vehicles, toy horses, road transport, coaches

Hard cover book. My Mask Author: Norman Lindsay Publisher: Angus & Robertson Date: 1970 Further Information: Hardcover with dust jacket lettering and patterning to spine. The spine has a Library label with an inscription.non-fictionMy Mask is Norman Lindsay's autobiography, an account written by Lindsay of himself, running to 245 pages with numerous photographic illustrations, published in boards with a dust jacket by Angus & Robertson in Sydney in 1970. Notably, it was actually written in 1957 but wasn't published until after Lindsay's death, and one source specifies it was released by his widow the year after he died. It covers ten pages of front matter plus 205 pages of text and 28 pages of illustrations, bound in blue cloth. It was the last of three autobiographical works Lindsay produced, and his final book overall. The work capped a 56-year writing career that began with his first novel in 1913. As a genre piece, it's a memoir/reflection on his own life and creative persona; the title itself, My Mask, signals that it's presented as a curated self-portrait rather than a full confessional.shipwrecked-coast, flagstaff-hill, flagstaff-hill-maritime-museum, warrnambool, maritime-museum, shipwreck-coast, flagstaff-hill-maritime-village, shipwrecked-artefact, book, pattison collection, warrnambool library, warrnambool mechanics’ institute, ralph eric pattison, corangamite regional library service, warrnambool city librarian, mechanics’ institute library, victorian library board, warrnambool books and records, warrnambool children’s library, my mask, norman lindsay

Hard cover book. New Arabian Nights Author: Robert Louis Stevenson Publisher: W Foulsham & Co Ltd Date: 1920s–1932 Further Information: Black cloth front cover, reinforced blocked spine with lettering and patterning to spine in black. The spine has a Library label with an inscription.fictionNew Arabian Nights is Robert Louis Stevenson's first published fiction collection, gathering stories that had originally appeared in magazines mainly the London Magazine between 1877 and 1880, and published in book form by Chatto & Windus in 1882. Despite the title, it isn't a translation of the Arabian Nights; rather, it borrows the frame-narrative device loosely, with Prince Florizel of Bohemia wandering the streets of London in disguise the way Harun al-Rashid wanders Baghdad in the original tales, stylistically drawing a connection to their nested structure. The book is in two halves: the first contains two linked story-cycles, The Suicide Club, about a sinister gentleman's club that helps members end their lives, and The Rajah's Diamond, dealing with a macabre secret society and the intrigues and escapades involving exotic jewels. The second half collects standalone stories, most notably The Pavilion on the Links, which was described by Conan Doyle as the first short story in the world, set in a cottage surrounded by quicksand, telling the story of two old friends who become rivals for a woman's affection. Also included is A Lodging for the Night, Stevenson's actual fictional debut.warrnambool, shipwrecked-coast, flagstaff-hill, flagstaff-hill-maritime-museum, maritime-museum, shipwreck-coast, flagstaff-hill-maritime-village, shipwrecked-artefact, book, new arabian nights, robert louis stevenson
