The seven photographs shown above are part of an anonymous donation, by a relative, of the photographic collection of a former member of No. 3 Squadron RAAF 1939-1945. They cover the African, Sicily and Italian campaigns. The entire collection comprises 175 photographs. The collection has been divided into sets depicting various aspects of 3 Squadron operations. The above images are representative of this particular set of 34 photographs, featuring allied aircraft from British and American squadrons that that shared airfields with 3 Squadron in Africa and Italy. Of note are the photographs from Foggia in Italy, home to dozens of bomber and fighter squadrons. The newspaper clipping is the second of two extract from 'Prisoners of War: Australians Under Nippon', by Hank Nelson. The extract touches on the conditions the nurses serving in Singapore experienced, moving into the eventual evacuation. The first nurses were evacuated on February 10, [1942], with half of the remainder the following day, and the final nurses were evacuated February 13. These sixty-five nurses were aboard the Vyner Brooke with 300 other passengers, mostly women and children. The ship was spotted and bombed the next day. Sister Vivian Bullwinkel, clinging to the side of a lifeboat, came ashore on Radji Beach, Banka Island. She became one of a group of twenty-two nurse, other Vyner Brooke passengers and twenty British soldier from another bombed ship. This group decided to surrender to the Japanese, who proceeded to kill all but one British soldier and Vivian Bullwinkel. After holding out for ten days the pair made their way to Muntok, hiding the evidence they had both survived a massacre. Keith David Livingston No VX136969 (born Jeparit, enlisted Mataranka NT) in the 2nd AIF on 21.6.43 age 20 years. At discharge from the Army he was a Pte in 173 Aust Field Ordnance Depot. He often told the story that he was in Darwin at the bombing and they moved them down to Katherine and then it was bombed so he was either in the CMF or working up there at the time and then enlisted in the AIF. These books are part of the Lawless Collection. The Lawless family lived in Orbost from 1907 - c 1920. John Francis Lawless had a saddlery shop. He died at an early age - 47 years - June 7 1912, leaving his wife, Elizabeth and seven children. The eldest son, Victor Rowland lawless volunteered for serv ice in WW1 but did not leave Australia because of illness. The second son, Edward Vincent Lawless (b 1895 d 1917) worked for McCoy & Co. in Orbost, coachbuilding, undertakers, general blacksmiths and farriers, prior to enlisting in WW!. He was trained as a signaller and was sent to France where he was killed in action on 9.10.1917. Elizabeth Lawless worked as a ladies' nurse (midwife) in Orbost prior to leaving the district in 1920. She lived to 6.6.1975 aged 104 years.These personal documents, photographs, medals and books give an insight into the human element of World War 1 ensuring that those who were part of the Orbost community and died while playing a vital role during this time are remembered.Three books used by Edward Vincent Lawless during his service in WW1. 1846.5 has a black cover and contains hand-written notes and diagrams in an exercise book. 1846.6 has a purple cover and contains hand-written notes on bombing. 1846.7 is a small book with a black cover and a ribbon for tying closed. The family moved to Anglesea River sometime between 1937 and 1942. A sheet metal worker by trade, Lester had run the bakery business for 14 years, his father retired, and was working as a baker at Anglesea when he enlisted in the R.A.A.F. on 5 December 1941 at Melbourne. Previously he had worked as a baker at Research (1937). He undertook training as Aircrew at No. 4 Initial Training School at Victor Harbour, South Australia, followed by No. 1 Wireless Air Gunners School at Ballarat, Victoria, and No. 3 Bombing and Gunnery School, West Sale, Victoria. It was reported that the aircraft take-off was quite normal and after climbing to 800 feet it passed out of view of the ground observers. A few seconds later the aircraft crashed, and it was reported that the sound of the engines seemed to become desynchronised. The crash occurred one and a half miles northwest of Longworth, Berkshire and the aircraft destroyed by fire. It carried a crew of five. Lester’s service file reveals that on the evening of 22 April 1943, Lester was a member of the aircrew of Whitley V bomber, N.1374. The airframe had run 1,127 hours. A full moon was just rising. The flight was non-operational, its purpose a dual conversion on type mission flown by a student pilot with almost two hours completed at night on similar flights. They had just changed aircraft as their previous aircraft had become unserviceable. The pilot had accepted the aircraft, which was technically unserviceable as the NCO in charge of flight had not completed the inspection paperwork correctly. The aircraft had undergone a major engine repair the day before. The aircraft took off at 2348 hours from R.A.F. Abington. It was reported that the aircraft take-off was quite normal and after climbing to 800 feet it passed out of view of the ground observers. A few seconds later the aircraft crashed, and it was reported that the sound of the engines seemed to become desynchronised. The crash occurred one and a half miles northwest of Longworth, Berkshire and the aircraft destroyed by fire. It carried a crew of five. Lester is commemorated on the Eltham Roll of Honour Board, which was commissioned by the Eltham War Memorial Trust to be hung in the Eltham Infant Welfare Centre, part of complex of buildings that form the Eltham War Memorial. The Honour Roll is presently (2023) hanging in the Eltham Library Community Gallery space. ORFORD William Henry - Munitions Worker Number 542 William Henry Orford enlisted 1 Feb 1916 and embarked for France 25 May 1916. He was a Tunneler and was part of an operation of a group of British miners (known as "Claykickers" or “Manchester Moles”) recruited during World War I to tunnel underneath no man's land and set bombs below the German front at the Battle of Messines in June 1917. 10,000 German soldiers were killed instantly after the detonation of explosives beneath their lines. The story was depicted in the film "The War Below". Doug Orford, William's nephew recalls William saying they could hear the Germans as they tunnelled below them within metres. Main story Mrs Wilma Young (nee Oram) is speaking for the first time publicly about certain happenings during World War Two, when she and other Australian Nurses were held as POWs in Sumatra. Of the 65 nurses who fled from Singapore on the Vyner Brooke in February 1942, 54 made it to Banka Island after the ship was bombed, with 21 being massacred on a beach. Over the next three years the remaining nurses were imprisonesd by the Japanese in a series of camps in Sumatra and on Banka Island, before being liberated. The group of surviving nurses had not spoken of certain events publicly before, but at 78 Mrs Wilma Young has decided to. The Japanese tried to force the nurses into participating in a makeshift brothel, or 'club' as the Japanese called it. The instructions were for four nurses to go to the 'club', but instead 28 went. They made themselves as horrible as they could, and made use of their time there by stealing sugar, toilet paper and anything else they could. Eventually four women were pressured into staying behind, but they were able to hold out against the Japanese. Eventually the Japanese gave up on this idea. The Japanese' treatment of the the nurses, as well as the other women and children in the camp was brutal. Punishments could include being made to stand out in the punishing sun for hours without a hat, or being slapped on each side of the face, hard enough to be knocked over. The daily food rations consisted of a cup of rice, sometimes supplemented palm oil, rotten vegetables or similar. Daily work for the nurses included caring for the sick prisoners, rarely with medicinal aid. Story one - Horror Island The story retells the story of the Vyner Brooke bombing and the following massacre of twenty one nurses on a Banka Island beach. The Vyner Brooke was carrying almost 300 women, children and elderly men fleeing Singapore for Australia. On the ship were also 65 nurses from the 10th and 13th Australian General Hospital. A few days into their journey they were spotted by the Japanese and subsequently bombed, with three out of the 29 bombs dropped scoring direct hits. Only seventy people survived to make it to the nearby Banka Island. The smaller group, that included twenty two nurses, surrendered to the Japanese, who shot and bayoneted the men, then shot the nurses, with only one surviving. Wilma Young (pictured) was among the larger group who were luckier, only being taken prisoners. Story two - She saw her friends die around her... The only survivor of the Banka Island massacre, Vivian Bullwinkel (pictured), testified at the 1946 war crimes trial in Japan. Vivian gave evidence of the massacre, not for revenge, but for the sake of the twenty two nurses who died around her.
