On the 19 February 1942, 242 Japanese aircraft, in two separate raids, attacked the town of Darwin, ships in the harbour and the town's two airfields in an attempt to prevent the Allies from using them as bases to contest the invasion of Timor and Java during World War II. Darwin was lightly defended, relative to the size of the attack, and the Japanese inflicted heavy losses upon Allied forces at little cost to themselves. The two Japanese air raids were the first, and largest, of more than 100 air raids against Australia during 1942–43.The Bombing of Darwin, also known as the Battle of Darwin, on 19 February 1942 was the largest single attack ever mounted by a foreign power on Australia. The urban areas of Darwin also suffered damage from the raids and there were a number of civilian casualties. The photos were taken over approx. 3/5 months during mine and bomb clearance in the Darwin area, 1946-47. The photos were supplied by C. C. Parish RAN No.32690 who worked on the clearance. Possibly made by the donor.This object is an example of trench art. .1 The lamp base consists of a chrome plated deactivated mortar bomb attached to a turned brown wooden base. A globe and switch socket are attached to the tip of the bomb. An electrical cord with power plug is threaded through the base of the bomb. .2 The lampshade is made of stiffened brown paper laced to a wire frame with dark brown cord. Handpainted coloured flowers decorate the outer surface of the shade. Part of a navigator's training was to practice bomb aiming. These bombs detonated a liquid causing a thin spiral of smoke to rise from the impact point. Thousands were dropped near Nhill.At the end of WWII thousands of the remains of these bombs were removed for recycling.
