Horseshoe Case, 1906 – 1907
... brian chapman... beer advertisement. Brian Chapman had the horseshoe case... advertisement. Brian Chapman had the horseshoe case in his possession ...The horseshoes in this purpose-built display case were made by Thomas Alfred Chapman in 1906-1907. T.A. Chapman operated a blacksmith’s shop in Mortlake Rd, Purnim. He made this horseshoe case especially for the Australian Exhibition of 1907 that was promoted by the Australian Natives Association (ANA). It was the 3rd Exhibition of Australian Manufacturers and Products and was held in the Exhibition Building in Melbourne. Reference is made to the horseshoe case in the Exhibition’s Souvenir Catalogue of 1907 on page 85, under the heading “In the Machinery Section the following exhibits are also shown … “CHAPMAN, T.A. , Woolsthorpe, via Warrnambool, Case of Horseshoes.” Some interesting information can be gained from one of the invoices from Thomas Chapman’s business, dated July 1 1953. The invoice has the printed letterhead “Chapmans Bushfield Shoeing Forge” and shows emblems of a bridled draught horse on the left and a collection of horseshoes, tools and implements on the right. It includes the services he offered; “Wheelwrights, Horseshoers and General Blacksmiths, Repairs of all kinds executed”. The invoice also announces “Charges Moderate, Interest Charged on all Overdue Accounts.” The work charged on that invoice was “Make 2 hinges and hooks for gate ..” at a cost of Six Pound 10 Shillings. The display case of horseshoes changed hands several times, going from its maker Thomas Chapman to his mother then various other members of his family. The case was also displayed at the Lee Family’s butcher shop at 188 Liebig St Warrnambool, and in the Purnim Hotel during the Warrnambool May Races. In the late 1950’s the horseshoe case went to Thomas’s son, Brian. Brian “Snacks” Chapman was a third generation farrier. Thomas had taught him the work of blacksmithing then Brian worked his apprenticeship at Flemington Racecourse to become a Master Farrier. He returned to Warrnambool and worked in his trade throughout his life. He operated his blacksmith shop at the Warrnambool Racecourse Grounds. In the 1970’s and 1980’s he did work for many Warrnambool horse trainers - he was a big fan of local racing. Brian later operated his blacksmith’s at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village, where his customers would bring their horses to be shod. The 1860’s bellows that Brian used as blacksmith at Flagstaff Hill had once belonged to the Warrnambool Racecourse. Brian was also involved in some of the Village’s promotional photographs, videos and even a movie film taken on site, including a Toohey’s beer advertisement. Brian Chapman had the horseshoe case in his possession until the end of July 2017. Brian and his siblings, Doolan and Dinny, then decided to donate the case to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village where Brian had conducted his blacksmith trade for 15 years. Brian had a love for horses and trained a few during his life; the best known horse was “Lord Toy Boy” who won four jumping races. He spoke of one of his horses as “glistening in the dark” when he was in top condition. Brian passed away in August 2017. The horseshoe case is significant as an example of trades in the early 20th century in Western Victoria, Australia. It is also significant as an example of horseshoes from the early 20th century. The horseshoe display case is also significant for its association with the Australian Exhibition of 1907, showcasing Australian produce and manufacturing to the world. The horseshoe display case is locally significant for its association with local families, essential businesses and community events. Display case of homemade horseshoes. Bellows, 1862-1875

The end is forge-fitted with an iron nozzle or tube, called a tuyere or tue iron, which concentrates the air to fan the fire or furnace. Tuyeres were traditionally made of cow horn. The double-action of this bellows moves air both in and out of the bellows in the one movement of the long handle. The bellows were manufactured by John C. Onions of Birmingham, England, between 1862 and 1875. The stamp with the text, Gold Medal 1862, is on the bellows and was also used on the business’ advertising was added to the business advertised using a gold medal. In 1875 the company was registered and began using the name John C. Onions Limited. This bellows came from the Warrnambool Race Course where it was once used by Brian Chapman (1931-2017, Master Farrier, in the 1970s and 1980s, but it is uncertain how long the bellows had been there. The bellows was then donated to Flagstaff Hill, where Brian again used it when he operated his blacksmith's shop there. A sign “Brian the Blacksmith” above the bellows recognises Brian’s voluntary contribution to Flagstaff Hill. His initials BC have been formed horseshoes that he had forged. In 2019, the bellows is still being used by Flagstaff Hill’s blacksmith. JOHN C. ONIONS, bellows manufacturer John Collingwood Onions (1841-1904) was the son of John Collingwood Onions (1809-1862), bellows maker, and his wife Martha. They lived in Yardley, Birmingham, England. The younger John Collingwood Onions He married Helen in 1867 and they named one of their children John Collingwood Onions (1868-1913). John Collingwood Onions (born 1841) was well known as a Birmingham manufacturer of patented bellows and other forge-related equipment, including portable forges, anvils, vices and tue irons. He made bellows for anchorsmiths, blacksmiths, founders and others and operated as a wholesaler and retailer for both the local and export markets . In 1871 the business had eight employees. The full name of the founder of the business was John Collingwood Onions. The firm was established in 1650 and successive sons for generations were named John Collingwood Onions and continued to run the business. The company exported many of their items to the British colonies. In 1845 John Collingwood Onions was listed as a smith's bellows maker in 62-64 Bradford St, Smithfield, Birmingham. An 1848 advertisement adds that the company held the patent for single and double-action circular and oval bellows. In 1863 the company registered a patent on portable forges. An 1862 advertisement points out that John C Onions was a “Bellows manufacturer and contractor to Her Majesty’s Honourable Board of Ordinance” and His Imperial Majesty the Emperor of the French [Napoleon Bonaparte]”. The advertisement includes a portrait sketch of the Emperor Napoleon III, and an Imperial Autograph Letter dated May 23, 1854, from Napoleon, Palace of the Tulleries to Mr J C Onions of Bradford Street, Birmingham… “I accept with pleasure the product of your industry, the which the perfection of workmanship, no less than the rarity of the material, gives a particular value; and I feel much the graceful attention you have shown in presenting it to me. Receive, Sir, with my thanks, and as a slight mark of my satisfaction, the Gold Medal, with my Portrait thereon, which accompanies this letter.” John C. Onions Limited became a registered company in 1875. In 1876 the advertisements included that the company were smiths for hearths and tools in general and showed a row of six medallions including one with “Napoleon III, Emperor” and his portrait, and another “ _ _ _ 1862 MEDAL”. Their advertising motto was “For Excellence of Quality”. In 1877 the business had offices in 20 Colemore Row. Then in 1885 the company merged with William Allday and Sons to become Allday and Onions. These 1860's bellows were once used at the Warrnambool Racecourse and represent a trade used in the annual racing event that continues today.Bellows; a large, oval double-action smith’s bellows, manually operated, in working condition. The paddles of wood that form the top, middle sections and base of the bellows have flexible leather pieces attached firmly between them, forming airtight double lungs. Cut-outs in the panels allow the bellows to fill with, and empty out, air. The smith pumps the bellows by pulling down and releasing a long handle, controlling the quantity and force of the air. The blasts of air are forced through the metal nozzle or tuyere at the end of the bellows and into the forge’s fire. This bellows was used by local blacksmiths at the Warrnambool Race Course. Inscriptions are impressed in the wood on the upper paddle or board of the bellows. There are three circular stamps containing text (mostly illegible). John C Onion of Birmingham, England, manufactured the bellows circa 1862-1875. Text impressed in the wooden upper paddle of the bellows has been assumed to read “JOHN C.
