Part of our history on display These mementos were collected by Jock Sturrock’s wife Betty on their trips around the world to yacht clubs and sailing events. This collection has been lovingly preserved by Betty’s bother Doug Jones, his wife Elaine and their daughters Michelle and Claudia, who have donated it to Royal Brighton Yacht Club for members to enjoy. The Celebration Cup perpetual trophy was presented by Rod and David McKenna at the March Half Yearly General Meeting. Rod addressed the meeting, acknowledging that from its humble beginnings in 1875, the Royal Brighton Yacht Club has been a beacon of excellence in the yachting community. Over the past century and a half, it has grown not only in size and stature but also in the hearts and minds of countless individuals who have shared in the passion and spirit of sailing. The McKenna Family has over 232 years of total membership between them and have been involved in the Royal Brighton Yacht Club community since 1941 when Keith McKenna was first elected to the club membership and appointed Honorary Treasurer in 1950 for 10 Years. Keith’s wife Judith was elected to the club membership in 1981and acted as Treasurer for the Ladies Auxiliary for 35 + Years, both contributing to its growth and success through their unwavering support and dedication. Each of Rod and David’s grandfathers were also members while Rod and David continue to support the club in Race Management duties. The Cup is first awarded for the 150th Anniversary Regatta held on the weekend of 29, 30 March 2025, with winners of each class and Division honoured with a plaque on the Cup. The Deed of Gift accompanying this trophy allows for future celebratory events to preserve the legacy of our club for future generations. In 1904, at the initiative of Premier Thomas Bent, Victorian Railways was authorised to build an electric street railway from St Kilda to Brighton. The line opened in early 1906 and was one of Melbourne's first electric tram services. On Saturday 5 May, 1906, Premier Thomas Bent performed the opening ceremony of the St Kilda to Brighton electric tramway at the Brighton Terminus, presided over by Cr. Thomas Wilson, Mayor of Brighton, with refreshments following at the Brighton Yacht Club. About 60 representatives were in attendance including the Railway Commissioners and the mayor and councillors of St Kilda, Brighton and Caulfield. The newspapers of the day commented that the cars were the best yet seen in Australia, possessing a great advantage over the Sydney trams, in that they are easily entered, and the glass windbreak was another improvement in design. The photo shows part of the process of moving a yacht, named 'Sonia' from 213 Union Road, the home of the Fleming family. It was built in the shed garage of the house and moved from it by horse and dray. The home belonged to Harold Arthur Fleming (1891-1971) and his wife, Georgiana Phyllis (nee Griffiths: 1895-1936). Harold built the boat. They had 3 children - Eric Alexander (1918-1920), Sybil Patricia (1921-2012) and another girl. The shed /garage had been the old coach house of the adjoining property, 215 Union Road. the boat was launched at the Brighton Yacht Club. Harold was a draughtsman. The Flemings lived in a number of houses in Surrey Hills: 1. 1919 - 'Radnor' in Croydon Road; the name possibly derives from Radnorshire, Wales where Georgiana was born. 2. 1921 - 169 Union Road 3. 1931 - 213 Union Road. The donor (deceased) was the daughter of the builder and married Keith Andrew Fleming. A black & white photo with 3 draught horses in the foreground. This dress belonged to Brighton local Paula Folks, who wore it to her niece's wedding at St John's, Toorak in 1970. It also bears a second connection to Brighton through the label, Elegance, a Flinders Lane fashion house co-owned by Rudy Brill and Brighton resident Robert Salter. Paula was a longtime manager and owner of Pearl's Boutique, a well-known local fashion boutique established by Elsebe Wilhelmine Wills and Pearl Murray in 1965. The two friends had grown up together in Horsham, and decided to go into business together after reading in Fashionweek that women in their thirties, forties, fifties and older had trouble finding young-looking styles. Setting out to fill this gap in the market, they established a store at 240 St Kilda Street, near the Brighton Yacht Club, with Elsebe handled the buying while Pearl fronted the shop. They moved to 40 Church Street, Brighton in 1967. Paula joined the business as a manager in 1968, became a partner in 1971 and took over from the original owners in 1988. When she closed the boutique in 2005, she donated a number of garments to Brighton Historical Society. Reflecting fondly on her 38 years at Pearls, she told The Age, "I have enjoyed all my days here because people are special to me. I love fashion. Angus McIntyre Cup Donor: Unknown Deed of Gift: No Angus McIntyre joined the RBYC in 1912 and was Commodore 1922/23 and again 1939/40. He was also club Treasurer for a number of years and Secretary for four years. McIntyre was also instrumental through Lord Foster in obtaining our Royal Warrant for the club in 1924. He was a very active yachtsman and skipper of a number of famous yachts including Foam, Idler, Brighton, Marie Louise and others. E. B. Green Trophy (Cup) Donor: Deed of Gift: E. B. Green was one of the original members of the Brighton Sailing Club and in 1886/87 owned the yacht Iris. The trophy is awarded to the winner of a combined division race on IRC handicap. The race is a mid-distance race and sailed on the same day as the Top Hat Trophy on PHD handicap. Worane Trophy (Tray) Donor: Deed of Gift: The yacht Worane was built in 1915 for Brighton Sailing Club member Lionel Drury and who later joined Hobsons Bay Yacht Club where he later became Commodore. Worane was originally built as a top mast cutter and remained so until 1949 when RBYC members Ross Farrow and Harry Tyrell purchased her. Peter Timms also joined the crew at that time. Worane became a regular part of the RBYC racing fleet and also became known as a great party boat. In 1970 Worane was sold to a new syndicate headed by Leigh Weber and continued to race at RBYC until sold in 1983. Worane is currently being restored at Williamstown. The syndicate donated the trophy for an annual race RBYC to Port Arlingtom on IRC handicap, however due to berthing difficulties at Port Arlington the race was sailed over a mid-distance RBYC course and in 2010/11 the race was changed to RBYC to Queenscliff. BLISS Trophy / Lady Skippers Short Course Trophy - This is now awarded for the BLISS series (Brighton Ladies in Sailing Series) which is held annually over a weekend or a Sunday. The BLISS regatta forms part of the Port Phillip Women's Championship series and so attracts sailors from other yacht clubs around the Bay. Australia Day Trophy (Tray) Donor: Roy Tapson, Blairgowrie YC 1958 Deed of Gift: No The trophy was donated to encourage inter-club competition for Jubilee yachts from Brighton, Blairgowrie and Sorrento. The regatta is to be held at the Mornington Yacht Club with each fleet. Racing to Mornington is held on the Saturday of Australia Day weekend, followed by a combined fleet race on the Sunday with all yachts returning to their home clubs on the Monday. Harvie Linklater Cup Donor: Deed of Gift: Harvie Linklater was one of the early member of RBYC and for a number of years was the clubs’ Historian.
