This publication gives a detailed history of the McLaurin, McMeekin and Paton Families who settled in Northeast Victoria.The migrated to Australia aboard the Bounty Scheme ship Brilliant under the command of Captain Gilkison. The voyage departed from Tobermory, Isle of Mull, on 27th September 1837 and arrived in Sydney on 20th January 1838. The voyage that the original intention had been to send the Brilliant to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania), but because of reports of poor prospects for immigrants there the ship had been sent to Sydney instead. Many descendants of these families made their way to Northeast Victoria and established themselves in Albury and the Upper Murray district of Victoria. Nicholas Mangan is an Australian multidisciplinary artist known for his sculptural and film-based installations that explore the complex relationships between global economic systems, resource extraction, and the natural world. The 'Brilliant Errors' works are unique, non-editioned pieces, comprising of photographs and news clippings pinned to cork board, framed under bright orange Perspex. The images and news clippings relate to Mangan’s research into the history of the sun and its life-giving properties, more recently harnessed by the solar industry as an alternative to coal. The images and news clippings stem from a wide range of sources – from human sacrifice in ancient Mayan culture to the biophysics of the Russian scientist, Alexander Chizhevsky; currency fluctuations to the eleven-year solar cycle itself. The bright orange Perspex glows vividly when hit by natural light, reminding the viewer of the centrality and omnipresence of the sun’s power in the structure of our days and lives. Born in Geelong, Nicholas Mangan lives and works in Melbourne. The competition is called The Australian Bookplate Design Award. The purpose of the competition is to increase interest in and to attract publicity to the artistic value of bookplates. Although the competition is referred to as 'Australian' there is a category of award open to International artists. This specimen is part of a collection of almost 200 animal specimens that were originally acquired as skins from various institutions across Australia, including the Australian Museum in Sydney and the National Museum of Victoria (known as Museums Victoria since 1983), as well as individuals such as amateur anthropologist Reynell Eveleigh Johns between 1860-1880. These skins were then mounted by members of the Burke Museum Committee and put-on display in the formal space of the Museum’s original exhibition hall where they continue to be on display. This display of taxidermy mounts initially served to instruct visitors to the Burke Museum of the natural world around them, today it serves as an insight into the collecting habits of the 19th century. The male Turquoise Parrot is bright green above, with a turquoise blue crown and face. A brilliant two-tone blue band around the bend of the wing contrasts with a dark, brick-red shoulder patch. Its underparts and tail edges are a rich yellow. The female is similar, but not as bright, with a whitish facial mask, no red on the wing, and a pale wing stripe. Old birds of both sexes may have orange underparts. Once common throughout many parts of eastern Australia, the Turquoise Parrot was formerly recorded from near Mackay in Queensland south to Melbourne until the 1880s, when its population suddenly crashed. It was even considered to be extinct by 1915, but populations recovered spectacularly over the next 20 years or so, and by the 1930s they were again recorded through much of their former range. Now the species can once more be seen in many parts of eastern and south-eastern Australia, though not quite as extensively as before. These birds are vulnerable in NSWThis specimen is part of a significant and rare taxidermy mount collection in the Burke Museum. This collection is scientifically and culturally important for reminding us of how science continues to shape our understanding of the modern world. They demonstrate a capacity to hold evidence of how Australia’s fauna history existed in the past and are potentially important for future environmental research. This collection continues to be on display in the Museum and has become a key part to interpreting the collecting habits of the 19th century. This bottle of finishing ink was manufacturer by Ascot Manufacturing Co., a subsidiary of Melbourne pharmaceutical company Rocke Tompsitt & Co Ltd. Finishing ink was used by cobblers - and in this case, by shoe and boot owners at home - to colour and polish the raw cut edge of leather and to repair worn or damaged edges of shoe soles. It is difficult to determine exactly when this was made or used without more detailed records of Ascot Manufacturing's catalogue, but Rocke Tompsitt ceased independently operating in 1978 and their ownership of Ascot dates back at least to 1945, if not earlier. Rocke Tompsitt was founded in 1908.Finishing ink was historically used in the area for domestic maintenance of shoes and boots. This bottle was made by a defunct company in a style no longer in use.A bottle made of brown glass, with a brown paper label on the front side. The plastic lid is damaged, with only half of the screw cap remaining. Inside the bottle is a dry powder, likely the dried remains of the finishing ink. The phosphoroscope was invented by Alexander Edmund Becquerel and used to measure the amount of time that a phosphorescent substance will glow after being irradiated by a brilliant source of light.The phosphoroscope consists of a round metal chamber with a pair of rotating discs inside, arranged so that no light can pass directly through the chamber. The discs have cut-out windows spaced equally at regular angular distances and are turned by the hand crank linked to a gear mechanism.
