This work is a serigraph (screenprint) on cartridge paper using blue oil based inks of the 'Brolga' (Australian Crane); a common, gregarious wetland bird species of tropical and south-eastern Australia and New Guinea / It is a tall, upright bird with a small head, long beak, slender neck and long legs / The pose of the bird represents their stance when calling out to their mate, which sounds like a loud trumpet / The decorative markings on the bird's plumage is from the traditional carved/etched Gunnai shields from Gippsland Eastern Victoria, which is where Thomas' people are from. Behind the table is the arched cast iron fireplace (lost) with mantelpiece with a clock and candelabras. On the left side we can see the corner of the oak console and on the right another cupboard and a framed painting. The photograph also shows the wooden floor covered with rugs. A photo of children at Harelands in the 1960s in the dining room doing their homework, helped by Legatees. Harelands was a residence run by Melbourne Legacy to take care of children whose fathers were deceased servicemen, and who may have been left orphans, or whose mother may have been unable to care for them herself, or they needed to stay in Melbourne for education. Harelands generally looked after children up to the age of 14. The graduates had much sought after practical experience. Gellibrand station was one of the larger and more important stations possessing a waiting room, station office, parcels shed and refreshment room joined by a common verandah. The refreshment room was managed for many years by Mrs. O'Neill who, with her staff, around 1920, offered a hot meal for one shilling. In the afternoon, a "cuppa and rock cakes" was available to passengers on the train to Colac. Vernon Holt was a boyhood friend of Frank Wright. Frank Wright was a renown resident of Smeaton, where he was born. He lived at Laura Villa, and attended Smeaton State School. His father William was a gold miner and his mother's name was Sarah. Their family won many singing and instrumental awards. Frank was tutored by Percy Code and was awarded a gold medal for the highest marks in the ALCM examinations in the British Colonies at the age of seventeen years. He became the Australian Open Cornet Champion by the age of eighteen. A year later, Frank conducted the City of Ballarat Band, and later the Ballarat Soldiers’ Memorial Band. He formed the Frank Wright Frisco Band and Frank Wright and his Coliseum Orchestra. These bands won many South Street awards, and Frank as conductor won many awards in the Australian Band Championship contest. In 1933 Frank Wright sailed to England to conduct the famous St Hilda’s Band and was later appointed Musical Director of the London County Council, where he organized many amazing concerts in parks, in and around the London district. He was made Professor of Brass and Military Band Scoring and conducted at the Guildhall of Music and Drama. Frank was often invited to adjudicate Brass Band Championships around Europe, in Australia, including South Street and in New Zealand. This was the first work de Clario painted during his Australia Council residency in Paretaio, Arthur Boyd's studio in Tuscany. It was painted in an old stable with a vaulted ceiling that reminded de Clario of a cenacolo or supper room. Domenico de Clario has an international reputation, gained particularly through his installation work and collaboration with composers and musicians. De Clario made many irregular shaped, un-stretched paintings during this period. He was involved with Arte Povera, a socialist based art movement where the 'poverty' was reflected in the choice and use of materials. This work was entered into the 1986 Shire of Eltham Art Awards.
