Many bridges in the South West of Victoria were constructed from Bluestone basalt rock because the area is on a large volcanic plain and that rock is in abundance. The bridge in the photograph is the bluestone bridge at Bulla which spans the Deep Creek, a tributary of the Maribyrnong River. It was built in 1869 and replaced a ford crossing which was built further downstream. The narrow swing catanery bridge was built behind the school across the Deep Creek downstream from the bluestone Bulla Bridge. It was built so that children who lived on the south side of Bulla Township could access the school more easily and in shorter time than if they had to go by the main roads.The bridge was constructed in the days when most children walked to school. The photograph shows the approach to the Bulla Bridge at Deep Creek in the Township of Bulla. Immediately on crossing the bridge there is a sharp bend in the road and a step ascent up Bulla Hill through the cutting until level ground is reached. The photograph is looking to the NW. This photo came from an album of photos associated with the Grant Family of Bulla. The album was in poor condition and so the photos were removed from it for archival storage. They were numbered in the order they appeareed in the album. Most of the photos were of the creek area in Bulla; a few contained figures. Only one was inscribed as follows: " HB Grant/Craigellackie/Bulla".(0713). Inscriptions is in lead pencil on the back.Unmounted sepia photograph. The original swing bridge was built across the Deep Creek in 1854 to allow the Daniel family to visit the Dickens sisters. The phtograph was taken by Alfred Sinel who was the local photgrapher in Sunbury. The four arched bridge spans the river at Deep Creek, Bulla. The bridge replaced the forde crossing which is in the foreground of the photograph. In the late 1970s an interstate tourist bus crashed on its side on Holden Bridge which spans the Deep Creek at Bulla. The timber and cable swing bridge straddled the Deep Creek at Bulla behind the Bulla school. The photograph was taken before the wooden Holden Bridge which spans an arm of the Deep Creek at Bulla was replaced by a more sunstantial concrete structure. The Kaolin Quarry at Bulla supplied Kaolin to the Northcote and Brunswick Pottery Works until it ceased operation at that site in the 1950s. This is a photograph of the bridge in the Bulla township which spans the Deep Creek, a tributary of the Maribyrnong River. Sunbury Railway Station was an important centre and stop on the Bendigo- Echuca train line. Many goods were weighed loaded, offloaded stored in the storage sheds for the surrounding districts at this centre. Commercial Stores was owned and run by Peter Eadie from Perthshire in Scotland, whose brothers were John and Robert. Peter and Robert arrived in Sunbury in 1864 to help their brother John with his milling enterprise. In 1866, Peter purchased the blue stone general store in Macedon Street near the bridge. He later built the Commercial Hotel also in Macedon Street and near the Ballcourt Hotel.Before the railway arrived in Sunbury, Macedon Street was Sunbury's main commercial centre. After the establishment of the railway, the commercial centre shifted close to the railway station. The Eadie family's stately home, 'Dunblane', was on the corner of Brook and Jackson Street.A Lutheran Church now occupies the lower section of the land fronting Brook Street, but the home has a local heritage listing. Peter Eadie became a Shire of Bulla councillor and President in 1880. Dunblane is from the Scots Gaelic -'dun' is a fortified hill and 'Blane' a missionary.The Eadie Family established one of Sunbury's general stores in the town and were involved in many other commercial activities.A print of a non-digital black and white photograph of a country general store. A few little privately run schools were set up in Bulla township from the late 1850s before Bulla State School No.46 was built and opened on 25th November 1870. It was a bluestone building with a slate roof and an extra weatherboard classroom was built later. The school was built at the end of School Lane near Deep Creek. A swing Bridge was built across the creek to give pupils quicker access to school. The school functioned until December 1996 when it closed and the property was sold and became a private residence.Bulla State School No.46 was one of the earliest government school to be established in the district and functioned in the original building for 126 years until it was closed.
