In the 1990's the Alister Clark Rose Garden was established in the surrounding grounds. The garden is open to the public all the year round. The move to build the Mechanics Institute was started in 1883 and the foundation stone was laid by Lady Janet Clarke in 1885. The Sunbury Memorial Hall was originally the Mechanic's Institute which was built on the present site in 1885. The hall was remodelled in 1922 and renamed the Sunbury Memorial Hall. The building was used until the 1960s as the meeting place by the Shire of Bulla Council. Before the Shire of Bulla built permanent offices in Macedon Street, the council used to meet in the Memorial Hall and had rooms there to conduct regular business. Some cottages were demolished to build the new offices which were completed and opened in 1966. Over the years as the shire's population increased, further additions were added. The 'Meeise' French car is parked outside the former Mechanics Institute Hall in Stawell Street, Sunbury. J Eadie was responsible for the building of the hall in 1885 and the foundation stone was laid by Lady Janet Clarke. The former Shire of Bulla conducted their council meetings in the hall from 1923 until 1956 when new offices were built in Macedon Street. Later the RSL took over occupancy of the hall and it became known as the Memorial Hall. The building is the former council offices for the Shire of Bulla in Macedon Street, adjacent to the Sunbury Library . It was built and opened in 1966. Prior to this date, council meetings were held at the former council building in Bulla and the Memorial Hall in Sunbury. The parkland is part of the Village Green, which is surrounded by Barkly, Brook and Macedon Streets in Sunbury. In the foreground is the temperature controlled glass building which houses the restored Armstrong twelve pounder gun that the Clarke family gifted to the people of Sunbury in 1922. For many years it stood in the open at the junction of Macedon, Stawell and Barkly Streets until 1970. The Starkie Water Fountain is on the LHS of the image. The cream building in the middle distance is the Memorial Hall, formerly the Mechanics Institute, built in 1885 and the red brick building is the former Sunbury State School. St. Mary's Church Hall is the small building in the distance.In 1973 Shire of Bulla council closed off Stawell Street to create the Village Green for a passive recreation area, which also included a section for the placing of important memorials. The champagne glass was used to commemorate the opening of the new Shire of Bulla Council Offices in 1966. The twenty five debutantes made their debut in Sunbury at the Memorial Hall late c1950s or early 1960s. Mrs Aitken trained the girls for the event.Debutante Balls were a popular annual event in the local Sunbury community and were well attended. The Sunbury Gun was originally donated to the Shire of Bulla by the Clarke family. For many years it stood at the intersection of Barkly, Stawell and Macedon Streets. Over the years it became very dilapidated and as traffic along Macedon Street gradually increased it was decided to refresh and relocate it to a triangular site opposite the Memorial Hall in 1970.
