The Pilgrims Progress Author: John Bunyan Curated By: Rev. Robert Philip Publisher: George Virtue Date: 1850 Further Information: Red hardcover with a red spine and reinforced corners, lettering in gilt. The spine has a Library label with an inscription.fictionWritten in 1678, The Pilgrim's Progress is a deeply influential Christian allegory that tracks the spiritual journey of a man named Christian. Weighed down by a crushing burden on his back (representing his sins), Christian flees his home in the "City of Destruction", after reading a holy book. Guided by the evangelist Evangelist, he embarks on a perilous trek toward the Celestial City (Heaven). Along the way, his journey brings him face-to-face with a cast of characters who personify spiritual triumphs and trials, such as Faithful, Hopeful, Mr Worldly Wiseman, and Giant Despair. He must navigate legendary, treacherous obstacles like the Slough of Despond, the temptations of Vanity Fair, and a terrifying battle with the demon Apollyon. The narrative is structured as a dream sequence experienced by the narrator. Because the second half follows Christian's wife, Christiana, and their children on the same path, it functions as both an adventure tale and a road map for the Puritan concept of salvation. It should be noted that the 1850 George Virtue printing is a classic example of a mid-Victorian luxury reprint. It is highly notable because it was curated by the popular non-conformist minister and author Rev. John Kennedy was born on 04 April 1862, the son of ship carpenter Robert Kennedy and his wife Florinda (Aitken), and the brother of Malcolm and Colin Kennedy. In 1860 the family migrated to Melbourne where Kennedy senior set up as a shipwright. In 1879 Malcolm and John, who trained as a naval architect, joined their father as Robert Kennedy & Sons, shipbuilders and shipsmiths. On 27 December 1883 at North Melbourne, Malcolm married Ann White with Presbyterian forms. Next year Robert Kennedy & Sons removed to Hobart where with John W. Syme and W. J. Duffy, partners until 1889, they took over the Derwent Ironworks & Engineering Co., a foundry formerly owned by the (Alexander) Clark family. The Kennedys also acquired the patent slipyard, formerly Ross's, at Battery Point. After the shipbuilding industry in Hobart began to flag John also turned to mining: he attended the Ballarat School of Mines, and reopened the Hobart smelters which had been an adjunct of the Derwent Ironworks in the 1870s. He made several voyages overseas on smelting business and as mining promoter, and was a member of the London Stock Exchange. In 1913-14 he was manager of Tongkah Compound (1910); Robert Kennedy & Sons was reputed to have contributed to the success of the Hobart-run Tongkah Harbour, Thailand, tin mines by developing a suitable dredge. The brothers also held shares in the Irrawaddy Burma Co. John was a member of the Australasian Institute of Mining Engineers and from 1932 an honorary life member of the American Institute of Mining & Metallurgical Engineers. John died in Hobart on 10 January 1937. (Ann G. Bohn beginning in 1848, as part of his well-known "Bohn's Standard Library" series of affordable classics. Volume 3 is the volume centred on Milton's ecclesiastical, educational, and domestic-life tracts, quite distinct from Volume 1 and its regicide/republic defences and Volume 2's church-government and press-freedom writings. The contents include The Likeliest Means to Remove Hirelings out of the Church; Animadversions upon the Remonstrants' Defence against Smectymnuus; and Apology for Smectymnuus, Milton's final anti-prelatical tract (1642), defending the Puritan pamphleteers writing under the collective pen-name "Smectymnuus" against Bishop Joseph Hall, and defending his own personal integrity as a polemicist. Also included is The Doctrine and Discipline of Divorce, Milton's controversial 1643 tract arguing, on scriptural grounds, for the lawfulness of divorce on grounds of incompatibility, written not long after his own troubled first marriage. There are further divorce tracts within this volume, as it continues the argument of the Doctrine and Discipline. The volume also includes a Tractate on Education, Milton's short treatise on his ideas for educational reform, and A Declaration for the Election of John III, King of Poland. Therefore, Volume 3 collects Milton's writings on church reform, personal and religious controversy, divorce law, and education — the more personal and doctrinal side of his prose output, as opposed to the state-political defences in Volumeshipwrecked-coast, flagstaff-hill, flagstaff-hill-maritime-museum, warrnambool, maritime-museum, shipwreck-coast, flagstaff-hill-maritime-village, shipwrecked-artefact, book, pattison collection, warrnambool library, warrnambool mechanics’ institute, ralph eric pattison, corangamite regional library service, warrnambool city librarian, mechanics’ institute library, victorian library board, warrnambool books and records, warrnambool children’s library, the prose works of john milton vol 1, john milton

John DERMER (1949- ) Born Melbourne, Victoria John Dermer studied Ceramics at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and Hawthorne State College (Diploma of Education), before working in potteries in England. Upon his return to Australia he established "Kirby's Flat Pottery" studio at Yackandandah, Victoria in 1974. John is proudly a product of the Leach/Hamada movement in ceramics. He sees this as a tradition that for him represents the essence of working with clay. The lines are pure and balanced while the forms are honest, proud and passionate. Yars of research and experience in salt glazing were rewarded in 2006 when John Dermerwon the highly prestigious Saltzbrand Keramik International Award in Koblenz, Germany. Another avenue of ceramics for which John is renowned is in the field of terra sigillata. This passion had its foundation back in 1987 when he received a major commission from Romaldo Giurgola and Pamille Berg for the new Parliament House in Canberra. During the completion of these massive pieces for the Prime Minister’s suite and Cabinet entry he had to invent and develop methods for decorating and firing the pots successfully. The completed pieces are still regarded by John as some of his finest works. John Dermer was a visiting lecturer to the Gippsland Centre of Art and Design (GCAD). This work is part of the Jan Feder Memorial Ceramics Collection. Jan Feder was an alumna of the Gippsland Campus who studied ceramics on the campus. She passed away in the mid 1980s. John MITCHELL (1837 - 14 July 1926) Born Woodside, Donside, Scotland John Mitchell attended evening classes under James Giles in Aberdeen, and was also taught by his uncle the Peterhead artist John Mitchell. After an apprenticeship at a local lithographic company (Keith and Gibb) John Mitchell went to London to study at the Slade under Legros. Returning to Aberdeen he painted many scenes around the city and Aberdeenshire, including Balmoral, under the patronage of Queen Victoria. John Mitchell gave lessons in painting to the Royal Family. His landscapes are highly coloured with dominant blues and purples in the hills and with vivid greens and yellows in the foreground, subtly fused and never garish. He lithographed sketches for John Stewart's 'The Sculptured Stones of Scotland', 2 vols 1856-57, illustrated 'Under Lochnagar' 1894. His landscapes of Aberdeenshire are highly prized especially in the area in which he lived. His painting in the Mearns is regarded by some as his best work. In 1875 he painted an interior of Culter Castle and its Chapel which was subsequently purchased by the owner and in 1883 showed a portrait of his mother. Lived latterly at 10 Gladstone Place, Queen's Cross, Aberdeen. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. Established by George Guthrie in 1857 (about 5km north of its current site) and then again seven years later in 1864 after it initially closed, Bendigo Pottery remains one of the most influential and longest running Pottery’s in Australia. Over the years the Pottery has contributed to the growth and development of the district through both its products including building products, table ware and decorative and commemorative war as well as artistically, being responsible for training and supporting many potters locally. The City of Greater Bendigo has had a long history of partnering with Bendigo Pottery and the Civic Collection holds a number of important items within its collection. This John C Watson (Chris Watson) 'reform' flask was one of a limited edition character bottles produced by the Pottery to commemorate important figures in Australian politics. He was the first Labour Prime Minister elected forming a minority government in April 1904, aged 37, after the ALP withdrew its support from Deakin. He was one of the first socialists to head a government in a parliamentary system, attracting international attention, and remains Australia's youngest prime minister. After less than four months in office, the Watson government lost a confidence motion and Watson was succeeded as prime minister by anti-socialist George Reid. The original reform flasks were English salt-glazed stoneware flasks produced in the early 19th century shaped into the form of figures connected with the Reform Bill of 1832. Much was made of puns like ‘the spirit of reform’ at the time. Artist John Frith has taken the reform flask form as inspiration for a series of political ceramics of some Australian Prime Ministers. The series included Edmund Barton, Alfred Deakin and Watson.Glazed ceramic flask in the shape John Watson. Selections from the Prose Works of John Milton Author: John Milton Edited by the Rev.James J G Graham Publisher: Hurst and Blackett Date: 1870 Further Information: Red embossed hardcover with a red spine and lettering in gold. The spine has a Library label with an inscription.fictionSelections from the Prose Works of John Milton (1870) is a curated compilation of the non-poetic writings of John Milton. While Milton is globally famous for epic poems like Paradise Lost, he spent a significant portion of his adult life writing fiery political and religious tracts. This specific volume, compiled and annotated by the Rev. James J.G. Graham, extracts the most powerful segments of Milton’s prose. The book organizes his writings to give readers a cohesive look at Milton's philosophy, including his arguments for the freedom of the press known as Areopagitica. This was a famous 1644 prose pamphlet by Milton, written to protest Parliament's Licensing Order of 1643, which mandated government pre-approval for all published books. It remains one of the most historically significant defences of freedom of speech and the press. This work also encompasses his thoughts on the right to overthrow tyrannical rulers, his views on church reform, and various autobiographical passages.flagstaff hill, warrnambool, shipwrecked coast, flagstaff hill maritime museum, maritime museum, shipwreck coast, flagstaff hill maritime village, great ocean road, selections from the prose works of john milton, colac municipal library, rev.james j ggraham

"Kilbeggin Cottage" front gate, picket fence and garden obscures the weatherboard house over two blocks at 7 - 9 John Street, Eltham. Possibly a "For Sale" sign is at the side of the photograph for 11 John Street next door. Built about 1878 for carpenter Richard Bettison, John Street is part of the original Holloway subdivison in the area known as Little Eltham. The Margaret Ball (Pre 1960s Houses) Collection was a personal project initiated to mark the year 2000 and arose as a result of the disappearance of many pre-1960s parts of Eltham due to development. Approximately 200 pre-1960s style houses that were left in Eltham between Main Road and east to Bible Street, between Cecil Street to the north and south to Dalton Street were photographed in late 1999. Not all of the houses could be photographed; some because the garden or trees blocked the view of the house, others because of rubbish or cars were in the way, some because people were working on the house or in the gardens at the time.Roll of 35mm colour negative film, 7 stripsKodak GC 400-6eltham, houses, streets, margaret ball (pre 1960s houses) collection, john street
