Mounted black and white photograph - dark blue grey card, semi embossed of 47 men in uniform and Manager at the Hawthorn Tram Depot with four tramcars behind. In an era predating the computerisation of equipment on public transport, where trams in Melbourne were driven by drivers and conductors sold fares, destinations were shown at the front and rear of the tram within a glazed box. A driver adjusted the roll to select each new trip destination. Given the length of rolls, in this case approximately nine metres, this could be a time consuming process. In addition to the named destination roll, each tram included a separate roll listing the route numbers.The roll was purchased at a Leski Auction in Armadale as part of a large group of tramways memorabilia including tram 'rolls' from New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania. The auction house described the collection as "The collection of destination blinds or rolls that forms the core of the Railways Trams & Buses Section (Lots 655 – 732) is the best we have ever offered and represents a life-time of collecting by an Adelaide enthusiast, now deceased." David Mitchell was born near the town of Forfar, Scotland, became an apprentice to a stone mason and builder, then emigrated to Australia in 1853. In Melbourne, he set up a builder's yard in Burnley St, Richmond and later bought Cave Hill Limestone Quarries in Lilydale and manufactured the cement in Richmond. He became Shire President for Lillydale in 1883. Also he established a brickworks in Burnley St, Richmond. He was responsible for building PLC College in East Melbourne, Menzies Hotel, The Exhibition building and Scots Church. Although he was very wealthy in his own right, he is also known as the father of Dame Nellie Melba. White soft cover booklet with a large drawing of David Mitchell (1901) on the front.

Repco Brabham Engines Pty Ltd, initially based at 81 Burnley Street, Richmond moved their entire engine program to 87 Mitchell Street, Maidstone in December 1964. This site became the Repco Brabham Engine Works, responsible for, design, machining, assembly, testing and race spec development. The Maidstone shop was small but closer to a precision engineering laboratory than a factory, but produced world beating engines. The Maidstone works produced the entire family of Repco–Brabham V8 engines, including the RB620 (1966), RB740 / RB730 Series (1967) and later 4.2 – 5.0 litre sportscar engines. The RB620 was the engine that powered Jack Bradham to his F1 1966 Driver’s and Constructors’ World Championship and the RB740 that powered Denny Hulme to his F1 1967 Constructors’ World Championship.This small but world‑class engineering shop built the Repco–Brabham V8 engines that won the 1966 and 1967 Formula One World Championships, the only F1 engines ever built in Australia to win a world title. Description: Female gardeners from the School of Horticulture, Burley, preparing an exhibit for Autumn Garden Week located at Wirth's Park on the site of the current Melbourne Arts Centre. A horticultural training establishment commenced at Burnley in 1891. Women were allowed to attend from 1899 under the enlightened leadership of Charles Luffman. By 1934, following the tragic impacts of World War One, women were both required and determined to earn a living and to be paid landscape architects, designers and managers. Wearing trousers and overalls was an outward indicator that should they wish, they could be horticulturalists, not just gardeners. Garden Week was billed as one of the most important floral displays held in Australia, showcasing flowers, fruit and vegetables, bulbs, succulents, garden ornaments, practical appliances and garden literature. There were large display halls and model gardens - designed to provide inspiration to the amateur gardener and showcase Victorian producers. Featured in "Newsworthy: Melbourne in photographs 1933-1936" exhibition at East Melbourne Library, October to December 2023. Exhibition caption by project volunteer, Louise McKenzie. In January 2026, volunteer Fiona Collyer contacted Burnley Campus Archives at University of Melbourne to share the image. Jane Wilson, Manager of the Burnley Campus Archives, University of Melbourne, supplied the following information: "I find that we actually have that photograph as a newspaper cutting, sent in from a former student. This is some additional information: Students are: Evelyn Yule (1932), Betty Holmes (1932), Margaret Doherty (1932) and Alice Glascodine (later Mrs. Tucker) (1933). Alice sent us the newspaper cutting."
