The bond of friendship of the internees and officers, NCO's and particularly Lieutenant Jim Sullivan who loaded an Army truck with young internees for a trip to Rushworth and Peters ice cream. Made by internees and given to Monte Punshon as a gift. Monte was an Australian warden who had oversight of the women and children in one of the compounds. Monte spoke fluent Japanese which she had learnt in the 1930's pre the war.Japanese doll dressed in brown, with bone and orange patterned kimono. Orange check obi carrying a blue/grey handbag. The boys are from Fiume, Istria a Zara They were ethnically cleansed by the Yugoslavs between 1945 and 1950, and emigrated under the UN Sponsorship Plan IRD to Australia, arriving on the M.V. In response to an advert in the Age, George Campbell, a staunch supporter and donor to our museum, and guard of camp 13 Rudi Pruckner escape to prevent repatriation. It is Gerald Peacock's true story and details of special requirements for internees including family groups, internees, POW's, style of compounds,number interred in compound. Tatura camp 1 held 1000 German, Italian and Austrian internees from Aug1941 to Jan 1947. Camp 2 held 1000 POW's German and Italian internees from Sept. 40 to Feb.46. Singapore group - Jewish refugees from Vienna, Austria, fled the Nazi occupation in 1938. Settled in Straits Settlements Singapore and Malaya (then British Territory) but arrested in 1939 when WW2 broke out between Germany and Britain.
