A separate area was used to stock firewood and the hut was located near a stream. Toilet amenities were most often in the bush.Dirty dented hollow tin cylinder with open ends top and bottom. Bag Canvas Water, Circa 1950
... camping equipment... container camping equipment survival pack On the front of the bad ...This extract from an advertisement in the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper of 1/12/1959 places the era in which this water bag was prolific throughout rural Australia. " ABERDEEN CANVAS GOODS for the man on the land here is Australia's most useful, convenient and hygienic water bag. Its special unbreakable plastic nozzle is fitted with a perforated filter strainer. Made from long flax canvas, its universal handle enables it to be hung on bumper bar, wire fence or on hook or nail" The availability of clean cool drinking water in remote rural locations was essential for survival under the blistering Australian summer sun. This was in a pioneer era when transport, roads and convenience stores were ,in a lot of "outback" Australia, in short supply and survival was dependent upon what could be carried by vehicle or pack horse. When the Kiewa Hydro Electricity Scheme became a reality, the use of the water bag was one of the essential personal items of survival given to each person working in the forests and on and in the high plains environment. Even in an outside stationary work place the availability of cool clean water was a prerequisite. The canvas water bag allowed any wind or airflow to cool down the water, even on very hot days, to provide a refreshing and throat quenching supply of water. These bags could be fastened onto the front of vehicles or hanging from shady tree branches thereby permitting air flow around the bag. During the "wearing in" period the residual taste from the canvas was fairly strong, this became considerably less as time and a half moved on. This "Aberdeen" long flax canvas water bag is held together on two sides and the top by strong heavy cotton stitching. The iron fashioned carrying handle has, protruding from its top elevation ,a very strong hook (well in excess of the bags' weight requirement). At the top, of the bag, and on one side only, is a brown coloured bakelite spout (with an inbuilt filter) protruding upwards. This spout has its matching , screw on, lid complete with attachment chain (not fixed at the handle end)On the front of the bad and stenciled in bold lettering, "ABERDEEN" and directly below "Travellers" and below this "FILTER BAG". Below this are two parallel black lines enclosing an ochre coloured band(12mm wide) running around the bottom section of the bag. Below this band is stenciled the number 14 in black (25mm high) figures. The spout lid has stamped on the top surface and within the outline of Australia, "ABERDEEN FILTER WATER BAG". Above this and close to the edge of the lid is pressed "PAT. No 9149/32 and down at the bottom rim is stamped "RD. No. 9870". canvas, water bag, water container, camping equipment, survival pack -

Helibox
... Camping Equipment... Aviation Bushfire Camping Equipment Large cardboard box with "wings ...The successful dropping of supplies to remote fire crews involved a great deal of experimentation. The result was a large heavy-duty cardboard container being developed in 1964 by Athol Hodgson from the FCV Fire Research Branch which employed fold-out wings and was called the “helibox”. It was suitable for supplies weighing less than 9 kg and best dropped from about 300 feet and became a standard technique. It was adopted Australia wide, but the wider availability of helicopters made the helibox eventually redundant.Unique to Victoria but adopted across Australia.Large cardboard box with "wings" to cause it to rotate when dropped from the air. Mantle for Gas Lantern
... communities. lighting gas heating camping outdoor equipment lamp ...Originally these mantles where produced to be used in gas street lights in Europe and North America cities. There use started in 1891. These mantles were used before electrical power street lighting was installed. They have been used ever since until safety concerns regarding radiation from their thorium infused particles made alternate mobile lamps more attractive. The age of open flame recreational lighting is fast coming to a close. The greater use of battery and generator powered lighting(ease of operation) has brought the costing of these alternative lighting to an acceptable level. The age of miniaturisation and volatility of the open flame has seen a greater swing to smaller and more stable lighting. These incandescent gas mantles were initially used in the Coleman White Gas LanternsThe Kiewa Valley, with its closeness to the Victorian Alps, allows greater opportunity for the "happy" campers to enjoy the outdoors. The lighting provided by the incandescent gas lamps allow the adventurer at heart to enjoy an alternative lifestyle and still having the comforts of "home" at their finger tips. The numerous camping facilities in the Kiewa Valley and the upper alpine region is testament that those living in the cities need a break from the day to day grind and go to a quieter and more spiritual environment. Artificial lighting, as provided by mobile apparatus, is highly valued by the urban gypsy. The outdoor recreational industry has significantly provided for, if only at holiday time, an industry that has a relatively high employment rate and beneficial to local communities. The gas mantle is in a fabric, pear shaped, of rayon fabric impregnated with cerium. It's appearance is similar to a very small fishing net. The fabric is very ply-able until it is heated by an open flame then it becomes more rigid and lets out an incandescent white light. Its colour is white to off white. It has a draw string fastened a t the bottom (to wrap around the flame source)lighting, gas, heating, camping, outdoor equipment lamp -

... ’ gear, and camping equipment. The sturdy wire handle allowed...’ gear, and camping equipment. The sturdy wire handle allowed ...This tin mug with a lid was commonly used in military, camping, and worksite settings during the 19th and 20th centuries. The lid helped retain heat and prevent dust or debris from entering the mug, making it practical for outdoor use. Similar designs were widely issued in soldier’s kits, railway workers’ gear, and camping equipment. The sturdy wire handle allowed for easy carrying or hanging over an open fire to heat liquids. The visible rusting and aged patina suggest this item dates from the early to mid-20th century. This is a metal tin mug with a matching lid, designed for drinking liquids or heating beverages over an open flame. The mug has a cylindrical shape with a slightly tapered base. The handle is made of twisted metal wire, looped into a sturdy shape for easy gripping. The lid is circular and features a small metal ring handle for easy removal. The surface shows visible rust, patina, and signs of wear, indicating age and extensive use.mug, cup, camping, stockman, fire, outdoor, railway employee, soldiers kit, military, worksite -

... and camping equipment, used by stockmen, drovers, and travellers since... and camping equipment, used by stockmen, drovers, and travellers since ...The billy can is an iconic piece of Australian bushcraft and camping equipment, used by stockmen, drovers, and travellers since the 19th century. It was typically used for boiling water for tea ("billy tea"), heating food, or carrying water. The enameled metal design helped resist rust, making it durable for outdoor use. This particular billy can likely dates from the early to mid-20th century, based on its design and patina. The wire handle allowed it to be hung over a fire, while the lid and clasp prevented spills when moving. This is a traditional billy can, commonly used for boiling water or making tea over an open fire. It is made of enamel-coated metal with a mottled gray pattern, a common finish in older enamelware. The lid is made of metal and shows signs of rust and wear, indicating age and frequent use. The handle is a metal wire, attached through two small brackets on either side, allowing it to be suspended over a fire or carried easily. A metal clasp secures the lid, helping to keep it in place when pouring or transporting.billy, tea, camping, fire, outdoor, stockman -

This photograph is linked with photograph 1168. Orbost locals have been taking camping holidays at East Cape since at least the early 20th century. From the mid-1940s about a dozen huts were located there, mostly by locals from the Orbost area, to establish what was known as the 'Conran Settlement' or 'Conran Community'. These huts were subject to permissive occupancy laws which were invoked by the State Labor Government to force their removal in 1986.
