Postcard written by Frank Wright to a friend, W. Snelling in London. Frank Wright was a renown resident of Smeaton, where he was born. He lived at Laura Villa, and attended Smeaton State School. His father William was a gold miner and his mother's name was Sarah. Their family won many singing and instrumental awards. Frank was tutored by Percy Code and was awarded a gold medal for the highest marks in the ALCM examinations in the British Colonies at the age of seventeen years. He became the Australian Open Cornet Champion by the age of eighteen. A year later, Frank conducted the City of Ballarat Band, and later the Ballarat Soldiers’ Memorial Band. He formed the Frank Wright Frisco Band and Frank Wright and his Coliseum Orchestra. These bands won many South Street awards, and Frank as conductor won many awards in the Australian Band Championship contest. In 1933 Frank Wright sailed to England to conduct the famous St Hilda’s Band and was later appointed Musical Director of the London County Council, where he organized many amazing concerts in parks, in and around the London district. He was made Professor of Brass and Military Band Scoring and conducted at the Guildhall of Music and Drama. Frank was often invited to adjudicate Brass Band Championships around Europe, in Australia, including South Street and in New Zealand. The Frank Wright Medal at the Royal South Street competition is awarded to an individual recognized as making an outstanding contribution to brass music in Australia.Black and white photograph of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Four photographs framed together to produce a panorama. The four photographs were taken from the slope of the Ballarat School of Mines where the Wesley Church now stands. When joined they gave a panoramic view of one of the world’s richest alluvial goldfields. The town you see had over 50,000 people. Bridge Street on the left is well established. The crude pans and cradles of the early “diggers’ were already giving way to steam power and the deep shafts of the “miners”. Money and machinery were needed to get to the deeper leads, and the smoke stacks of the great company mines can be seen across the photo. The waterloo mines was one of the first deep shafts and was sunk at the foot of the Dana Street hill. The foreground of the photograph features a small bridge, while in the background, right-hand-side, Benevolent Hospital can be seen. In the centre of the photograph can be seen a horse and cart travelling along the road. This photograph shows historical and research value in its depiction of Beechworth in the late 1800s. The hat brush is an example of a domestic object that would have been common to most households in the late 19th and early 20th century.The hat brush is significant in that the inscription connects the brush to a prominent hat maker in the Western district whose business can be dated to the late 19th century. The address of the business was 24 Bridge St Ballarat and was owned by Mr Charles Morris. Curved wooden hat brush constructed from light polished timber. The handle end has a small hole in it and the front end is pointed. The bristles are two tone in a circling pattern and cut to follow the curved shape of the wood. There is a chip out of the wood exposing the bristle holes. The brush is stamped with the suppliers name and address.C. MORRIS, HATTER, (?) Written on backing sheet, "West Croydon School (In Ringwood municipality)". November 1969. The area behind the pine trees was used as a training ground by the Wilhelmina Soccer Club, later called Ringwood City SC and Ringwood FC. It was later sub-divided and the two streets named Wilhelmina and Juliana Courts, in honor of Wilhelmina, Queen of the Netherlands, and her daughter, Juliana, later succeeding her as Queen. The Burnt Bridge Shopping Centre can be seen in the far west on one of the images.

From The Argus (Melbourne) on January 10 1934 "Damage estimated at £500,000 has been caused by the floods in the Orbost district. No loss of life occurred, largely owing to the heroic efforts of rescue parties. Many families spent Monday night on the roofs of houses or in trees, surrounded by deep, rushing flood waters." This 1934 flood was devastating, destroying a section of the 1922 Orbost bridge - the centre span was washed away -. wrecking fences, bridges and roads, dumping silt and debris on the rich river flats and drowning cattle. The old Diamond Street bridge in Eltham had a raised section seen here and a lower section, the railings of which can just be seen. The upper pedestrian crossing provided continual access for foot traffic during times of flood. This photo is part of the Alice Broadhurst collection held by Yarra Plenty Regional Library, a series of 12 photo albums compiled by Alice Broadhurst (1896-1981), initially while working as a Voluntary Aid Detachment nurse with the Australian Red Cross at the Mont Park Military Hospital (No. 16 AGH) and subsequently as a nurse at the Royal Melbourne and Royal Women’s hospitals alongside many pioneering doctors of their fields. At the conclusion and if time permits we can inspect the historical display at the Eltham Station. The walk is about 3 km in length and will take about 2.5 hours.
