This is a scene of Cape Conran, East Gippsland taken by Bairnsdale photographer, Stanley Vogt. It was probably one of a collection of commercial post cards available to tourists or East Gippsland residents to send to friends or relatives. As a result, postcards provide a comprehensive resource for anyone interested in how our forebears lived, laughed and loved one hundred years ago. They are very interesting records of places gone, architecture gone and people gone, showing social history such as dress, or early automobiles. Written in 2025, this book tells the story of a settlement at Cape Conran from early 20th Century until 1986. Cape Conran is on the coast of East Gippsland, Victoria. This book contains memories and photographs and diagrams and letters of the settlement. These were mainly holiday houses and occupied beachfront land by way of permissive occupancies (leases). In the 1980s, the occupants were asked by the Victorian Government to relinquish these leases and demolish the houses. The land then became part of a Coastal Park.This book is significant because it is a history of a beach settlement of holiday houses at Cape Conran from 1900-1986.Book of 152 pages. This photograph is linked with photograph 1168. Orbost locals have been taking camping holidays at East Cape since at least the early 20th century. From the mid-1940s about a dozen huts were located there, mostly by locals from the Orbost area, to establish what was known as the 'Conran Settlement' or 'Conran Community'. These huts were subject to permissive occupancy laws which were invoked by the State Labor Government to force their removal in 1986. Perched atop dramatic cliffs, the Cape Schanck Lighthouse has ensured the safe passage of ships since 1859. In 2025 it was still possible to climb the Lighthouse sandstone steps up to the still functioning lamp room for spectacular views over the Southern Peninsula and Bass Strait. Cape Schanck Lighthouse precinct includes the heritage listed lighthouse, museum and former lighthouse keeper's residence. Cape Bridgewaters is located on the western shore of Bridgewater Bay about 21 kilometres south-west of Portland and about 383 kilometres west of Melbourne, Victoria. The area was settled in the 1860s by the Henty family who had settled nearby Portland, and a post office opened in 1863 (closed 1968) though it was known as Bridgewater Lower for some years. Both Cape Bridgewater and Bridgewater Bay were named after the Duke of Bridgewater (1756-1829), by Lieutenant James Grant sailing on the Lady Nelson on 4 December 1800.
