A carte de visite is a photograph mounted on a piece of card the size of a formal visiting card—hence the name. The format was patented by the French photographer Andre Adolphe Eugene Disdéri (1819–1889) in 1854. While the identity of the individuals represented in the photographs was known to Annie Wishart, none are identified by name.Leather, ivory and paper photograph album including 18 ‘Cartes de Visit’. This 1870s Carte de Visite depicts Patrick Mc Etheney with the inscription 'arrested 4-11-75' for the crime of recieving stolen goods. Prior to the introduction of mugshots, physical descriptions, sketches or any available portraits like this Carte de Visite were used to depict and describe people of interest. Carte-de-visite is a small black and white photograph stuck to a card. It was invented by French photographer Andre Disderi in 1854 as a method for producing multiple images on a single glass plate, a format for mounting the resulting images on cards. The card on which the photograph was mounted displayed the name of the photographer on the front and back. Constable Alexander Fitzpatrick had a questionable character even before being posted to Greta Police Station in 1878. He made an attempt to arrest Dan Kelly but did not follow correct procedure. He went by himself and had also been drinking beforehand. While Fitzpatrick stated that he was assaulted and suffered a minor gun show wound at the hands of "Ned" Kelly and other family members, his claims were disputed by them. An extremely damaged, old and worn black covered booklet about ailments that people suffer with the title Doan's Dream Book. The front cover has an illustration of an ancient Egyptian woman sitting on a large stone chair with a child at her feet playing a type of harp. 'I wonder if Dreams Come True' is written at the bottom with the publisher details. It has many examples throughout of how these illnesses may be improved with advertising for products too. The back cover has lists of medication made by Doan's. p. 32. De Witt's 200 Year Calendar and Book of Horoscopes has a red, black, pink and cream front cover showing an oval with horoscopes drawn around the edges and a mountain with a yacht sailing on a river with 'The Quest for Health' written below. The title is written at the bottom of the cover. This booklet has the 200 year calendar at the front with dates from 1776 - 1976. Throughout the booklet are advertisements and information on various medications produced and sold by the company circa 1950's. p32.non-fictionA booklet on dream interpretation dispersed with advertisements and testimonials for Doan's medicines. Originally published in 1904, this likely is an early 1920's printing. Many booklets like this were produced as PR material to increase product sales between c. 1900 - 1915. They were given to the more affluent customers or clients by the local shopkeepers of the period and are interesting Australiana historical publications. They were anywhere between 8 to 32 pages. Andrew George Scott, also known as Captain Moonlite, was an Australian bushranger. Born in the 1840s, he was hanged in New South Wales in 1880 for the shooting of Constable Edward Webb-Bowen after a series of robberies and a shoot out with police near Wagga Wagga. Aside from his crimes and activities as a bushranger under the alias Captain Moonlite, Scott is also known for his relationship with his companion James Nesbitt. Many claim Nesbitt was Scott's partner and lover. James Nesbitt was an accomplice and companion of Andrew George Scott, also known as Captain Moonlite. Nesbitt and Moonlite met whilst serving gaol sentences in Victoria. Many claim Nesbitt and Scott were lovers. Nesbitt was killed in a shoot out with police in 1879 after the robbery of Wantabadgery Station near Wagga Wagga and a subsequent shoot out with police. He is buried in Gundagai. De Witt's Kidney and Bladder Pills were produced by a firm founded in 1912 by E C De Witt, Cheshire UK, with branches in New Zealand, Chicago and New York. It became part of the CB Fleet Group in 1990, whose UK operation is currently based in Runcorn, Cheshire where they still manufacture toiletries, skin care products and pharmaceutical products. Aimed at adults and children above the age of eight, De Witt’s Kidney and Bladder Pills were intended to ease backache, aches and pains in the muscles, and kidney problems. They are typical of a huge range of treatments that were available ‘over the counter’ at pharmacists for many years. It is not known how effective the pills were but the label assures people not to be alarmed if their urine takes on a bluish colour after taking a dose. The indications or uses for this product as provided by the manufacturer are: A diuretic stimulant for the kidneys to promote the flow of urine, combined with analgesic action. Aids in alleviating muscular aches and pains, restlessness, dizziness, backache, headache, getting up at nights, loss of energy if caused by sluggish kidneys.
