Visit to Dunmoochin prior to Clifton Pugh's home being destroyed by fire in 2002. Following military service in the second world war, Clifton Pugh studied under artist Sir William Dargie at the National Gallery School in Melbourne as well as Justus Jorgensen, founder of Montsalvat. For a while he lived on the dole but also worked packing eggs for the Belot family saving sufficient to purchase six acres (2.4 ha) of land at Barreenong Road, Cottles Bridge. He accumulated more land and persuaded several other artists and friends to buy land nearby, resulting in a property of approximately 200 acres, stablishing it as one of the first artistic communes in Australia alongside Montsalvat in Eltham. It was around 1951 that Pugh felt he had '"done moochin' around" and so the name of the property evolved. He bought timber from Alistair Knox to build his house on the crest of a hill. Inspired by local goldminer's huts, it was a one room wattle-and-daub structure with dirt floor. Over the years it expanded with thick adobe walls made from local clay, high ceilings and stone floors. All materials other than the local earth were sourced from second hand materials, most found at wreckers' yards. Artists from across the nation were drawn to Dunmoochin, with several setting up houses and shacks on the property, maintaining their independence but sharing their artistic zeal. Artists who worked or resided at Dunmoochin included Mirka Mora, John Perceval, Albert Tucker, Fred Williams, Charles Blackman, Arthur Boyd and John Olsen. In 2002, Pugh's house along with its treasure trove of art and a library of some 20,000 books was destroyed by fire. Traces of Pugh's home remain with the presence of the Victorian doorframe archway with leadlight of intricate design, procured from a demolished Melbourne mansion; and two bronze life-sized female statues created by Pugh and cast by Matcham Skipper. In place of Pugh's house rose two double-storey mud-brick artists' studios topped with corrugated iron rooves curved like the wings of a bird with accommodation for seven. Thompson Roy Morrison (1900-1972) was born in Bendigo and married Ivy Maria Knight in 1924. They lived at 63 Williamson Street. Ivy died aged 31 in 1933. Thompson remarried Violet Jean Hesse in 1936 but she died in 1938 also aged 31. Thompson was a motor painter.Black and white photograph mounted on rectangular grey board. Arthur Edgar Pitcher (1891-3/1/1974) lived at 90 Somerville Street with his wife Beatrice Matilda (nee Lewis), who he married in 1915. Michael Gabriel Giudice (1882-8/12/1947) was the son of Baptista and Rosa (nee Lang). In 1907 he married Beatrice Annie Harvey. Michael is listed as an agent and in 1931 is living at 451 Hargreaves St., Bendigo with his wife Beatrice.Black and white photograph mounted on rectangular grey board. Frederick Steele Ferguson (1861-1938) married Beatrice O'Brien in 1898. Originally they lived at 19 Brodie Street, Quarry Hill, but by 1925 they were registered as living on the corner of Rodney and Reginald Street with their son Frederick Steele McNair Ferguson and his wife Amelia, and later with their daughter Maude. It appears the family continued to live at this address following Frederick snrs death. John Leonard Court (1899-1976) was an insurance agent. His parents were John Leonard Court, who was killed in 1916 after being thrown from a cart, and Mary Edith Pitt. Thomas Crouch Watts was born on March 7th. 1865, to Joseph and Susan Watts. Before the real estate business commenced, Thomas and his brother were in partnership as booksellers and stationers in a shop at View Point. Thomas lived in a fine house in Rowan Street, which was called 'Ottawa' Thomas started his real estate business in the early 1900s in a shop in View Street. His daughter Edna was the book keeper and typist, Stewart Watson was the salesman and Stanley Phipps (Edith Lunn's father) was the property manager and valuer. When Thomas Watts died in 1914, his daughter took over the running of the business. She married Stewart Watson in 1918. Eventually the name of the business was changed to Bishop and Earl. From a letter from Edith Lunn re T.C. Watts & Son. 'The firm of T.C. Watts & Son later became Bishop and Earl. When the firm of Bishop and Earl ceased to operate after the death of Edith Lunn's father, S.P. Bishop, Miss. June Parry, Secretary of the BHS was a member of staff. Weatherboard house with cast ironwork decoration on the verandah. Three women, two men and four children with rocking horse stand for a photograph. Family unknown. Yarra Brae Park was situated on Yarra Brae Road, off Sweeneys Lane, Eltham. Research in historical newspapers reveals that the Hautrive family lived there 1904-1906, followed by the Bindoon family in 1907. In the 1930s it was occupied by Hubert Rutter, his wife Beulah and four children. Hubert was an Eltham Shire Councillor. On 13 January 1939, the house burned down in the Black Friday bushfires. After the fire, the family relocated to Toorak. Reproduced on p91 of 'Pioneers & Painters'This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book,"Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). The collection of over 500 images is held in partnership between Eltham District Historical Society and Yarra Plenty Regional Library (Eltham Library) and is now formally known as 'The Shire of Eltham Pioneers Photograph Collection.'
